Project Dates: January 10, 2013 - March 29, 2014Amount Requested: $2,556.00Project Synopsis: The University of Idaho has a thriving multicultural community of which not all students may be aware.  In partnership with existing student clubs and organizations, the Global Lunch project intends to promote intercultural and international awareness through a three-hour public fair of food and entertainment.

PROJECT GOALS AND ACTIVITIES

1. Project Goals and DescriptionThe Global Lunch is a cultural fair, free food included, that will raise campus

awareness of multicultural student organizations.  It is intended to provide a ready venue and funding for fourteen extant student cultural clubs to prepare food, presentations, and entertainment.  Cezar Mesquita, the Multicultural and Diversity Admissions Counselor, will be presenting as a guest speaker.  The Global Lunch is a one-day event which will take place on the Tower Lawn, beginning at noon on Saturday, March 29, and running until 3:00.  Preparation will begin in January with the reservation of the lawn and the gathering of participating clubs.  The clubs themselves will be responsible for deciding what they will bring or present: the project goal is to provide the opportunity, the time, and the space.  These are the clubs we will approach:    1. Organization de Estudiantes Latino Americanos (O.E.L.A.)

2. Gay Straight Alliance of the University of Idaho3. Ritmo Latino at University of Idaho4. South Korean Students Association5. African Student Association6. Chinese Students and Scholars Friendship Association

    2. Project Outcomes

Expected turnout is at least 400-500 people, served by 80 volunteers.  While there are many cultural clubs on campus, few have a prominent profile.  Students attend the University of Idaho from more than 70 countries, and many of them participate in these clubs.  By providing a ready venue for these organizations to present, perform, and participate together, we hope to raise cultural awareness of the university campus and community, and also encourage further teamwork and leadership among the student body.  As an event and living presentation, the Global Lunch will be its own metric of success.  If enthusiasm remains high, turnout matches expectations, and the participating clubs express interest, we hope that this could become an annual event.

3. Outreach ApproachAdvertising will be poster-based and begin in late February.  Starting the week of

February 28th, we will place two posted advertisements in Bob’s, the LLCs, the Tower, the TLC, the Commons, the library, and the Administration building.  The final design of these posters will depend on the clubs that decide to participate.  During the week of March 22 we will place an advertising table in the Commons, to be staffed by club volunteers, as a final reminder that free food and entertainment will shortly be available to the student body.

4. Participation and SupportThe Global Lunch will rely on support from the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the

Department of Student Involvement, individual student cultural clubs, and Cezar Mesquita.  The project is intended to provide only the venue and funding.  Final responsibility for each presentation booth falls on those clubs staffing them, who are in turn free to prepare food and entertainment as desired.  We intend to approach Cezar Mesquita as a guest speaker. Justine and Paige will make sure that everything is running according to schedule, while Thao will make sure everything is staying within budget.

PLAN FOR FUTURE ACTION

1. Future Goals    We envision the Global Lunch to be the proving ground for an annual event.  Campus cultural clubs do not meet often in one place, and if all goes well the framework put in place for this project will enable future lunches.  With an existing event to look forward to and promote, conventional and collaborative fundraising should be easier, and former attendees can spread the word.  With several hundred people projected to attend, word-of-mouth advertising should be considerable.

2. EvaluationProject progress will be monitored by means of weekly and biweekly meetings, and

the outcome will be measured in terms of participation.  If the expected number of people or more attend, the Global Lunch can be considered a success.  Attendees will be asked to mark a

record sheet, which we will then use to count the approximate number of people who partake of the event.

TEAM MEMBER QUALIFICATIONS AND INTERESTS

Justin Jensen is a political science major from Idaho with prior experience in catering and event planning.  He will be facilitating team meetings, posting advertisements, and volunteering at the table in the Commons during the last week to Event Day.  During the event he will assist with record-keeping.  He hopes to count the successful implementation of this project as proof of his organizational and multicultural skills, vital to his degree and planned career in political office.  As team leader and a man of global interests, he looks forward to working closely with the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Paige Orwin is a dual Spanish/English major from Washington, specializing in editing and communication.  She will be designing posted advertisements, keeping records of team meetings, assisting with the Commons table, and providing all relevant documentation as the project progresses, as well as possibly joining one of the Latino clubs in the kitchen.  She intends to gain valuable volunteer and organizational experience during the course of this project and challenge her Spanish skills as much as possible.

Thao Nguyen is an accounting major, career volunteer, and international student leader from Vietnam.  She will manage project budget and assist in interclub planning, ideas, and booth organization, using her prior experience in throwing cultural fairs and serving on a variety of student committees.  She sees this project as a wonderful opportunity for fellow international students to share their regional foods and activities, hopes to make new friends from both the US and abroad, and will add the event to her resume of volunteerism and leadership.
