INTRODUCTION

Rosetta Stone is a language training software created by Rosetta Stone Inc. and alhough there are many different language learning programs out there, Rosetta Stone is unusual since they do not use translations or vocabulary drills. Instead, Rosetta Stone utilizes a principle which they have coined as “Dynamic Immersion”.

DYMANIC IMMERSION LEARNING

Imagine you are a child who is just learning to speak. Children don’t learn language from flash cards and vocabulary drills- they learn language organically from the world around them. For instance, a toddler who constantly hears the word “door” from a parent when they are opening and closing a door will eventually learn to associate the word “door” with the door. In essence, Rosetta Stone seeks to mimic this natural language learning process with their “Dynamic Immersion” system.

How is this different from other language programs? Here’s an example:

Traditional Learning Method: A student is studying Spanish. They learn the Spanish word for “drinking” from a vocabulary list of basic activities. Then they are taught how to conjugate the verb through a series of grammar drills.

Rosetta Stone: The student is presented with the sentence “ella bebe” and they are show four pictures of people doing various activities. Since the learner already knows some vocabulary from previous exercises, she can identify the correct word by process of elimination. Now she knows the word for drinking, and will pick up conjugations in the next serval exercises.

Just the way you would begin to pick up a language by living in a foreign country, Rosetta Stone seeks to teach language through context- which is why there are no

translations or vocabulary drills. Their language learning system is meant to be as organic to natural learning as possible.

In Rosetta Stone Library solution, there are over 30 languages to choose from. See the chart below for the full list.

STARTING LESSONS

When you are ready to begin, click Launch Rosetta Stone® Language Lessons Version 3. The software will launch in a new window. You will be asked to choose the language you are interested in learning. (Note: If you choose a language that different than the one you chose on the login screen, you will receive an error message.)

After choosing the correct language, choose your level. Rosetta Stone recommends beginning on Level 1, even if you have some familiarity with the language. Click continue to begin your lessons.

LAYOUT OF THE CLASSES

Rosetta Stone classes are organized on a three tiered scale.

Levels: When you first choose your language, you will also be prompted on which level you would like to learn. Depending on the popularity of the language, there may be anywhere from 1-5 different levels. Rosetta Stone recommends starting on Level 1, even if the learner is familiar with the language, due to the way activities build upon knowledge from previous activities.

Units: Each level is spilt into several units. Units are sequential and usually revolve around a theme such as “work and school”, “shopping”, etc.

Core Lessons and Lessons: Just the way the levels are spilt into units, units are spilt into lessons. There are two types of lessons:

o Core Lessons: These are long lessons (typically 30+ minutes) that introduce core concepts. Each subunit begins with a core lesson.

o Lessons: These are short activities that review and build upon the knowledge gained in the Core Lesson.

Your home screen displays the progress of your lessons, as well as your score for each lesson. Lessons that have been successful completed are marked with a checkmark and failed lessons are marked with an x. You can retake these lessons as many times as you would like. The number of attempts, scores and any additional information will be listed in your report card.

If you wish to see an overview of all of the lessons in a unit, click “explore all activities” at the bottom of the screen. A list of all of the activities will open.

Setting up the Microphone

Though you can choose to skip speaking activities, Rosetta Stone recommends completing these activities to enhance the immersion experience. However, it is important to integrate Rosetta Stone with your microphone first. When you start your lessons, Rosetta Stone will prompt you to select a microphone that is currently connected to your computer. Select the correct mic from the list and follow the set-up instructions, which will involve you reading out a sequence of numbers to test the volume.

This works well for external mics, but Rosetta Stone does not always recognize internal microphones right away. If your computer has an internal microphone that Rosetta is having trouble recognizing, make sure that you have given Rosetta Stone permission to access the mic. Usually attempting the microphone setup will prompt the allow option in either Adobe or from your browser.
