WELCOME TO KNOXKnox Church is a congregation within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to create Christian community in which people of all

ages, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic situations are included as equally valued participants in our congregational life. We cherish our diversity, offering a safe place of belonging to any who wish to

explore their beliefs in an atmosphere promoting discussion, the development of healthy relationships and spiritual growth. We strive to be open to dialogue and shared experiences with people of other faiths. We enjoy worshipping the God made known in Jesus, endeavouring to do so in ways that are relevant to our daily lives, respect the integrity of creation, and make a positive difference

to our wider world.

A loop system for hearing aids operates at Knox.

Toilets are available through the door on the lectern side of the sanctuary.

1. God whose almighty wordchaos and darkness heardand took their flight, hear us, we humbly pray, and, where the gospel daysheds not its glorious ray,let there be light!

2. Saviour, who came to bring,on your redeeming wing, healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind, now to all humankindlet there be light!

3. Spirit of truth and love,life-giving, holy Dove, speed on your flight!Move on the waters’ face, bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth’s darkest placelet there be light!

4. Gracious and holy Three, glorious Trinity,Wisdom, Love, Might, boundless as ocean’s tiderolling in fullest pride, through the world far and widelet there be light!

John Marriott (1780-1825) alt.

Prayer of ApproachGracious and holy Three,Wisdom, Love and Might,YOU SENT FORTH YOUR LIGHT.

The globe was clothed in darkness. The sun had yet to blaze, the world was yet unformed, and the moon had yet to glow.YOU SENT FORTH YOUR LIGHT.

Page 4:   · Web view1.God whose almighty word: chaos and darkness heard. and took their flight, hear us, we humbly pray, and, where the gospel day. sheds not its glorious ray, let there

The human self was forming its value systems:fame, fortune, parking spaces and money.“Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way”it said.YOU SENT FORTH YOUR LIGHT.

The human self was saying “my own cleverness is for my own benefit”.Intelligence is a tool in my hand.It is a way to frame convenient argument,to step away from the responsibilities I feel. But you, O God, pinned your love to a gentler heart.YOU SENT FORTH YOUR LIGHT.

The human heart was avoiding the crisis.Good and bad don’t matter;the heart and mind are out of kilter. But finally, you put your question:“What do you really want?”YOU SENT FORTH YOUR LIGHT.

In every age, consistent with your being, whatever humanity’s fallen values,YOU SENT FORTH YOUR LIGHT.

Send forth your light, O God.Enable us to confess the disjunction of heart and mind.Enable us to confess the shallow values we chase.Enable us to confess the indifference we have to good and evil. And hear us as we say:

. . . Lord have mercy.CHRIST HAVE MERCY.Lord have mercy.

Assurance and ResponseListen to this, you people of God.The glorious Trinity (wisdom, love, might)hears the prayers of all people -the shallow ones, the guilty ones, the awful ones –yet proclaims them made right with their God.While God seeks the pure heart,God embraces the confessing heartand makes all things well.

Page 5:   · Web view1.God whose almighty word: chaos and darkness heard. and took their flight, hear us, we humbly pray, and, where the gospel day. sheds not its glorious ray, let there

. . . In the name of Christ I say to you:You are forgiven and you are free.THANKS BE TO GOD.

Prayer of Supplication:

God whose honesty, wisdom, love and valueshave invaded the hearts and mindsof all the faithful,BLAZE FORTH YOUR LOVE AND LIGHT AMONG US.

Give us the desire to be wise and faithful, and to live for others;for this is our prayer, taught us by Jesus, who said

. . . OUR FATHER IN HEAVENHALLOWED BE YOUR NAME,YOUR KINGDOM COME,YOUR WILL BE DONE,ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD.FORGIVE US OUR SINSAS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO SIN AGAINST US.SAVE US FROM THE TIME OF TRIALAND DELIVER US FROM EVIL.FOR THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY ARE YOURSNOW AND FOR EVER. AMEN.

The Passing of the PeaceKia tau tonu te rangimarie o te Ariki ki a koutou. The peace of Christ be with you all.

A KI A KOE ANO HOKI;AND ALSO WITH YOU.

We exchange a sign of peace with one another.

2. God of all power, I give you my will,in joyful obedience your tasks to fulfill.Your bondage is freedom; your service is song;and, held in your keeping, my weakness is strong.

Knox CaféSunday 16 August

7:00pm – in the Knox Lounge

Matthew interviews Chris WrightChris Wright, who knows Knox well, worships with us often, and whose article on justice was in the last “Knox Life”, was diagnosed a while back with hilar cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile ducts. Although Chris is only 41 years old, and would like to live much longer, the medical consensus suggests that he will die soon. Keen to speak candidly about his experience of illness, his reflections on the fellowship he has had with others who are living with cancer, and how his faith has shaped his journey, Chris has agreed to be interviewed by Matthew for a Knox Café.
