Welcome to the August magazine. We are going onto the holiday season with typical English weather! If you are going away I hope you manage to find somewhere dry and reasonably warm. There will be a break from the magazine in September as we are having a holiday too, hence this magazine covers both August and September.I am holding a Jumble Sale on 07 October, so if you are thinking of throwing anything away maybe you could find a corner to store it until then. The proceeds from the Jumble Sale will be go towards next year’s Stickney Show. Please look out for notices in the notice boards, in the village shop and anywhere else I can think to put one!Happy Holiday

Stickney HistoryAn Exhibition of Stickney History will, once again, be displayed in the Village Hall on 09 and 10 of September 2017. On display will be the censuses for Stickney and many of the surrounding villages together with over 800 photographs. There will also be records of Baptisms, Burials, Marriages with records from Stickney and other local Churches. There are also many newspaper cuttings from the village past, with many booklets about the history of Beer houses, shops, and the numerous trades that once thrived in the parish, this includes a display of over 100 letter heads, trade bills and much more. It is open from 10.00am until 6.00pm on both days with free admission. Light homemade refreshments will be available. We would always appreciate old photos to copy or anything to do with the history of Stickney. Our contact is Martin Gosling on 01205 480641 or visit www.stickneyhistory.co.uk

On the last Thursday of each month the Parish Council Chairman and Clerk will be available at the coffee morning at St Luke’s.

Page 4: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/128/Stickney... · Web view1} Spread newly dug potatoes out to dry before storing them in a cool dark space in

The mobile library visits Stickney on MONDAY’S at the Youth Centre, Hall Lane between 11.00am and 12 noon and at Horbling Lane between 12.15am and 12.45pm. The next visits will be 07 August, 04 September, 02 and 30 October.ST LUKE’S CHURCHAs we enjoy the summer holidays, it is good to have something to celebrate – not just British success in the tennis, athletics and cricket (this may be wishful thinking on my part) but closer to home too.

So, thank you to all who helped to make our Gift Day a great success. I understand that over £1700 was raised which will really help with the maintenance of the Church fabric. Every donation, large or small, is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, too, to Nick Gosling and the Church Wardens who have worked hard over the past 3 years to get the floor of the Church sorted. It is fantastic to see a ‘complete’ Church for the first time!

August tends to be a fairly quiet month, with many people going away for a rest, but September looks to be very busy as the schools go back, and life settles down to ‘normal’!

Coming up we will be supporting the Heritage Weekend (9 - 10 September), a Craft Fair in Stickford (9 September), and, of course, the usual round of Harvest Festivals. Keep an eye out for mall that is happening on the Church Noticeboard.

Kiddies CornerMake a Harvest Corn DollyA corn dolly was supposed to have been the spirit of the corn goddess and daes back hundreds of years. People believed that the corn goddess lived in the corn and would die when the corn was harvested uless some of it was saved. To make sure the corn goddess stayed alive until the next spring sowing a corn dolly was made from the last sheaf of corn for the corn dolly to rest in until the next sowing.

This is a simple corn dolly and can be made with various plaits. This one is made with a simple 3-straw Hair Braid plait.

under the heads.3. Plait until you have about 8cms of straw left.4. Bring the three straws together, and tie firmly at the

end of the plaited section with another clove hitch. 5. Bring this tie down to meet the other tie just under

the heads, to form a loop of plaited straw, and tie the two together with a ribbon.

6. Spread the wheat ears out between the wheat stalks and allow to dry flat, preferably under a weight. When dry, you can clip the stalk ends.

How to play: The players (2 – 4) take turns drawing a line, horizontally or vertically, to join two dots. As the game goes on the lines make up squares. The aim of the game is to make as many squares as you can, whilst trying to stop the other players getting squares! When a player completes a square with a line then they take another turn to join two more dots – several squares can be completed in one turn! Each time a line completes a square the player’s initial should be put in the square ready for counting up when there are no dots left to join. The winner is the player with the most squares.

A game to play in the holidays! Copy the page to save time drawing your own dots to play again!

Gardening Tips for August & September

The emphasis moves away from sowing or planting in the coming two months and veers towards harvesting. There are still important crops to start, but the volume of sowings decreases dramatically. Much of these months' work concentrates on keeping vegetables going - watering, blanching, earthing up and, above all, taking our rewards, in the form of fresh vegetables, from the garden. Here then, are a few jobs to be getting on with in the next couple of months:

August: 1} Vegetable plants and fruit plants will need constant watering in the warm weather.2} If you have grown sweetcorn plants, you will need to feed them with tomato food to get the best cobs. Similarly, apply high-potash fertilizer much as tomato food, to peppers, cucumber and aubergines once the fruit has begun to form.3} Strip the lower leaves off tomato plants up to the first fruit truss, to help air circulation and prevent disease. Also pinch out the top of the plant allowing 5 or 6 trusses where the fruit can be concentrated.4} Lift and dry onions, shallots and garlic once the leaves have flopped over and yellowed.

September:1} Spread newly dug potatoes out to dry before storing them in a cool dark space in either paper or hessian sacks. Do not be tempted to store damaged or diseased tubers - one rotten potato can ruin the whole crop.2} Keep feeding and watering French and runner beans to maximise cropping. Harvest little and often.3} When beans and peas finish, cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots which will allow nitrogen to be released into the soil, as the roots break down.

In conclusion, a quote from Francis Bacon who wisely wrote of gardening:"It is the purest of human pleasures."

To which could be added:'It’s the magic of watching the seasons change, sowing seeds,

dirty knees, the pride of surveying your work.'

Residents Association UK has been contacted to ask if this would be appropriate due to the Residents Association invoicing the Parish Council, a business transaction rather than a voluntary one. The Residents Association would have to advise HMRC of this income if invoicing. There is no problem with the Parish Council helping out with the supply of tools and reflective vests if the Residents Association wants to do the litter picking. The Residents Association can do the litter picking as volunteers and be covered under the Parish Council Insurance Policy.

STICKNEY SHOW 2017The week leading up to this year’s show was full of the usual last minute problems that had to be surmounted, countless varied enquiries by

Page 15: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/128/Stickney... · Web view1} Spread newly dug potatoes out to dry before storing them in a cool dark space in

e-mail and, in the final two days, the phone was constantly ringing. It was a week of contemplating every weather forecast available. The rain started as the school children competed in the Primary School Sports in the Main Ring. Undaunted they cheerily carried on and ‘The John Braybrooks Trophy’ was won for the second year running (excuse the pun!) by Stickney C E Primary School and the Runners-up Trophy was won by Old Leake Primary School. Both schools get to keep the trophies until next year’s show. Each child received a medal for entering and as a keepsake of the event. The rain during the morning reflected in a reduced number of visitors to start with, but the afternoon attendance was much better. For the first time we used a “clicker” to try and give us an indication of footfall and we think that we had around 1,500 visitors to the show. There were many highlights during the day and from feedback received so far, among these were the Andy Carando Magic Show with Robbie the Acrobatic Robot, Sophia Sandow’s Miniature Shetland Pony Shows, “Kidz Kraftz”, the South Wold Fox Hounds - in particular ‘Gadget’ who disappeared into the crowd and didn’t seem to want to come back - and also the scrumptious refreshments and excellent barbecue. The undoubted favourite was the gentleman who mysteriously arrived the night before the show, pedalled around the showground and sports hall on his penny-farthing bicycle wearing a smart ensemble topped off with a pith helmet bedecked with a fluttering Union Jack flag and then equally mysteriously disappeared! So, when we tried to thank him and get his contact details for another year he was nowhere to be seen. Fortunately I had given him a complimentary lunch voucher and tea and cake break vouchers for the morning and afternoon. Even so it would have been nice to express our appreciation for his entertainment.Talking of appreciation, thanks must go to each member of the Stickney Show Committee who has worked so extremely hard for the last ten months to put the show together. They have tried to cater for all interests and ages, and to ensure that there are things happening throughout the day so that the show offers something for everyone!

Page 16: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/128/Stickney... · Web view1} Spread newly dug potatoes out to dry before storing them in a cool dark space in

Thanks also go to all of our sponsors and advertisers, plus the exhibitors, judges, stewards and many helpers who have given freely of their time – they have all done a fantastic job. Also thanks to those who have donated raffle prizes, the village organisations taking part, and the Trade and Charity stalls for their support of the 2017 Show. Final thanks go to all of the visitors to the Show. As you know last year’s show was such a financial success that the committee were in a position to make donations to local charities and good causes after the show. As I am having to write this the day after the show, in order to meet the print deadline for the August/September edition of the ‘Stickney News’, I am unable to comment on the financial success of yesterday’s show. The morning’s weather and how it affected numbers and subsequently levels of income, as well as expenses to be paid out must be taken into account, but the show was certainly another great ‘free to enter’ event for the village and with that in mind it was certainly a huge success.Isabel DoddsShow Secretary
