A Word From Dana
I would like to thank all of the GAL volunteers for using the new Court Report template that was implemented a couple months ago. Many of you have attended the Court Report Writing In-Service Training and have come to realize the great importance of this document. The information in this report is crucial to your advocacy for the children to whom you are assigned. It is especially important to have thorough court reports in light of recent decisions made by the NC Court of Appeals. As you advocate for your children and write your court reports, remember the four key components of the GAL role: Investigation, Facilitation, Advocacy, and Monitoring.
Keep us updated on your fabulous recipes! And watch out for news about the GALA Food Lion
Brand Cook off.
Volunteer Spotlight on Bonnie SampsonBy: Casandra Downs
Bonnie has been a volunteer with our program since 2006. She chose our program once she retired from the corporate world to fulfill her passion of being a social worker. The GAL program was the right fit to reignite her passion for helping others reach their full potential.
Bonnie works diligently on her cases without fear or intimidation. She is not afraid to advocate for what is in the best interest of the kids in spite of opposition from social workers. When the best interests of her kids are not being met she does not hesitate to call supervisors of social workers and go all the way to the top if needed to reach a resolution for the children on her case load.
Bonnie is a mentor as well for a one of her teens whose case is now a closed. She still remains involved with the teenager. In spite of the caseload that she continues to carry of five children and one case out of county she still manages to make time to be a mentor.
Our program promotes taking time for self to decrease the risk of burnout. This ensures that one remains emotionally and physically healthy. Bonnie does a great job of ensuring that she takes some
time for herself by taking river cruises each year. She so enjoys those cruises and returns energized and ready to take on GAL work with a new spirit and increased motivation. Thanks Bonnie for being a volunteer with our program. We appreciate your dedication, time, and passion for the children.
