Web Design Certificate CapstoneThe Capstone seminar allows students to synthesize the skills and knowledge from the certificate courses while presenting a website they have designed, documented and built. Class activities simulate the processes of working with a client from initial interview through final project presentation.

For the Capstone project, students will build a website that showcases and demonstrates the web design skills they have acquired in the classes that make up the Web Design Certificate. Satisfactory completion of the Capstone project is required to receive the Web Design Certificate.

Who should take this course?

This course is required for participants in the Web Design Certificate Program, and enrollment is limited to certificate students who have completed all the required courses.

Course Objectives

•Produce and present detailed documentation of the information gathered from the client interview and user research.•Develop and present the detailed site organization and the design specifications.•Document and present the site implementation plan and the usability test. •Present the published website.

Course Details

•Length: 12 hours in class for presentations and discussions. You will be working independently outside of class to complete your project.•Format: Student presentation/Group critique •Class size: Maximum 12 students •Prerequisites: Successful completion of all required classes, the client chosen, the client interview and audience analysis completed, and the preliminary site design in process.

The above prerequisites are considered to be the basic skills and knowledge needed prior to taking this class. Instructors will assume your readiness for the class materials and will NOT use class time to discuss prerequisite materials.

Course Contents

Class 1: Capstone Project/Seminar Orientation Class 2: Project documentation – focus on the client interviewIn this class you will be expected to present the following information for critique and feedback: Write an executive summary of the client interview and user research results:•The identification of the client and analysis of the client’s needs•The purpose of the website including

º Mission Statement º SMART objectives º Success metrics

•A description of the audience including º Summary of audience characteristics º A persona of a typical user º A scenario of how that user would successfully utilize the website

•A comprehensive list of potential website topics

Students may develop their own forms for written documentation of this information, or can utilize forms provided in classes. Students are required to provide a copy of the written documentation as well as make an oral presentation of this material. Students will be provided with written feedback from their instructor and their peers that indicates if this portion of the project meets the criteria for a “Pass” or still needs improvement. Class 3: Project documentation – focus on the site organization and designIn this class you will be expected to present the following information for critique and feedback:•A detailed and accurate site architecture diagram•A navigation plan based on the site architecture diagram•The detailed page wireframes•The design specifications

º Fonts º Colors º Graphics and/or multimedia (including source)

•The page mockups

Page mockups can be developed in the application of the student’s choice. Students are required to provide a copy of the written documentation as well as make an oral presentation of this material. Students will be provided with written feedback from their instructor and their peers that indicates if this portion of the project meets the criteria for a “Pass” or still needs improvement.

Class 4: Project documentation – focus on implementation and usability testingIn this class you will be expected to present the following information for critique and feedback:•The methods used to write and validate the HTML and CSS.•The techniques used to meet the accessibility requirements.•The list of keywords for site optimization.

º How they were determined. º How they have been implemented.

• JavaScript, jQuery or other scripting languages. º How they were used to present site content.

•The usability testing plan. º The list of tasks performed by the users. º The methodology for conducting the usability test. º The problems identified by the usability test. º The modifications made to the site as a result of usability testing.

•The publishing plan. º The domain name selected. º The web hosting service selected.

Students are required to provide a copy of the written documentation as well as make an oral presentation of this material. Students will be provided with written feedback from their instructor and their peers that indicates if this portion of the project meets the criteria for a “Pass” or still needs improvement.

Class 5: Formal presentation of Capstone ProjectIn the final class, students will present their published website to the instructor, other class members and observers. Students will be provided with written feedback from their instructor and their peers which indicates if the site meets the criteria for a “Pass” or still needs improvement.
