    Introduction

The i-on40, i-on50EX and i-on160EX control unitshave an Ethernet connector on their main printedcircuit boards that you can use to connect a PC orlaptop directly to the control unit.

When the PC or laptop is connected to the controlunit, they communicate with each other usingTCP/IP, the same protocol that is used on theInternet.

The control unit contains a web browser interface.Once connected you can use a web browser onthe PC or laptop to see pages provided by theweb browser interface, and use those pages toconfigure the control unit.

To set up the connection you must:

    1. Give the control unit a fixed IP (internet

protocol) address.2. On the PC or laptop, change the settings for

your local network connection to provide afixed IP address.

    3. Adjust your browser so that it does notattempt to use a proxy server.

The rest of this guide shows you how to carry outthose three steps.

    Please Note:

The web browser interface on the control unit isintended for local programming only using a direct

cable connection from PC to control unit. Thecontrol unit is not designed to be left permanentlyconnected to a computer network.

A new feature of control unit software version 4.04and higher is a virtual keypad intended for accessby users who want to employ tablets or smartphones to control their alarm system. The newvirtual keypad (called “Virtual Keypad Instant” or“VKPI”) is provided by the web browser interface. To provide full time access for users the controlunit can be connected to a Wi-Fi access point. The access point must be properly secured sothat only the intended users and devices can

    employ it.

Eaton’s Security Business does not support theconnection of any device other than a WindowsPC or laptop directly to the control unit’s Ethernetconnector. Because of the large variety of routersor Wi-Fi access points available, if you wish toconnect the control unit to such a device youshould consult a suitably experienced networkengineer

Note: These instructions are for Windows7/XP/Vista. If you are using another operatingsystem please consult the appropriate manual.

    Changing the PC NetworkConnection

To change the network connection settings onyour PC or laptop you must be logged in with anaccount that has administrator privileges.

Many TCP/IP networks use DHCP (Dynamic HostControl Protocol) to assign an IP address to eachPC every time the PCs start up. The control unitdoes not provide DHCP, and so you must giveyour PC or laptop a fixed IP address that it canuse while connected to the control unit. Theaddress on the laptop or PC must be differentfrom the one you gave the control unit on page 2.

There are two ways of doing this: Either a) Youcan give your PC or laptop a fixed IP address thatit uses all the time (until you change it again). ORb) You can give your PC or laptop an alternate IPaddress that it uses when it cannot get an IPaddress from a DHCP server.

The rest of this section shows how to set up yourPC for three different versions of Windows:Windows 7, Windows XP and Vista.

    Windows 7

    Setting a Fixed IP Address

    1. Left click on the Start button. When the StartMenu appears left click on “Control Panel”.

    2. In the Control Panel menu left click on “Viewnetwork status and tasks”.

    3. The Network and Sharing Center menuappears. Left click on “Manage networkconnections”.

    4. The Network Connection menu appears. Rightclick on “Local Area Connection” and left clickon “Properties”.

    5. Windows 7 displays the Local AreaConnection Properties dialog box. Left click on

“Internet Protocol Version 4” to highlight it andthen left click on “Properties”.

    7. Finally, click “OK”. Also click “OK” on anydialog boxes that remain open.

    Using the Alternate Connection

If you have your laptop normally connected to alocal area network (for example in your office) but

occasionally use it for programming a control unit, then you may not wish to change the IP settingsevery time you want to connect the laptop to thecontrol unit. Windows allows you to store an

alternate IP address for you laptop, which it willuse if it cannot get an IP address for itself usingDHCP.

To set up an alternate IP address:

    1. Go to the Windows Start button, find ControlPanel and then open the Internet Protocol

Version 4 dialog box as described in steps 1to 6 above.

    2. Click on the “Alternate Configuration” tab.

    3. Left click on “Use the following IP address”

button.Enter the IP address (different to the controlpanel) and subnet mask (the same as thecontrol panel).Untick “Validate settings if changed upon exit”.

address in the PC should be the same as the firstthree groups of the IP address in the control unit. The last group can be any number (except theone used by the control unit). For example, if thecontrol unit IP address is 192.168.0.100, then192.168.0.50 is a good address for the PC, but19.168.1.50 is not.

    Using the Alternate Connection

If you have your laptop normally connected to alocal area network (for example in your office) butoccasionally use it for programming a control unit, then you may not wish to change the IP settingsevery time you want to connect the laptop to thecontrol unit. While you are programming a control unit do notleave your PC or laptop unattended when it isrunning and connected to the control unit.

When you have finished programming a controlunit always ensure that you have logged out.

Avoid simply closing your browser, because thecontrol unit will still be open and waiting for inputfrom you. Once you have closed your browser theweb browser interface will log you out if it does notreceive any more requests for more than threeminutes.

Connect ing to the Contro l

If you changed the port number that the controlunit employs (see page 2) then in IE8 you mus t  type Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. at thebeginning of the URL, followed by the IP number, then followed by a colon and the port number.

For example, if you changed the port numberused by the control unit to 90 (and it is using thedefault IP number), then you must type in:

    http://192.168.0.100:90.

Not Using Port 80 - Firefox

Simply type a colon and the port number at theend of the IP address. For example (if the controlunit uses the default IP address) type into theaddress bar:
