Appliquéing the Block1Follow manufacturer’s instructions for paper-backed fusible web. Trace Templates A-E on paper side of fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut out on drawn lines.

Finger-press blue batik print 7G˝ square in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Position A-E in alphabetical order, aligning straight edges of As with raw edges of square (Diagram i-A). Fuse in place. Edge-stitch using machine blanket stitch (Diagram i-B) to complete Owl Block.

Assembling the Potholder2To make hanging loop, press blue 2˝ x 6˝ strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together (Diagram ii-A). Fold long raw edges to meet at pressed line; press again (Diagram ii-B). Stitch close to pressed edges, through all layers (Diagram ii-C).

4Place block right side down on layered squares, keeping hanging loop between blue square and block (Diagram iii-B). Sew G˝ seam around all sides, leaving an opening for turning (Diagram iii-C). Trim corners, turn right side out, and press well (Diagram iii-D). Topstitch close to pressed edges through all layers to complete potholder.
