Web 2.0 – What Impact Will Wikis and Edmodo Have in the Science Classroom? Research Questions : Will the use of these Web 2.0 tools improve student performance? Will students spend more time outside of class studying? Will these tools have a positive impact on student comfort levels? Will a wiki and Edmodo have positive impacts on student attitudes? Data Collection Methods : Student pre-surveys Student interviews Student polling Student post-surveys Instructor observations Project Background : University High School is a 1:1 laptop school located in Carmel, Indiana. Students are surrounded by technology, but is that technology truly enhancing their education? This research project was conducted in two different science classes for a total of eight weeks to monitor the impacts of new technology and how students responded. Results : Wikis and Edmodo did have positive impacts on students in each class and teacher control of each tool played a role in the amount of student participation. Literature Review: According to Leuf and Cunningham (2001), creators of the original wiki concept, “a wiki is a freely expandable collection of interlinked webpages.” O'Neill (2005) states that wikis are a collaborative medium designed to promote content sharing. Wikis enable instructors to create interactive activities for their students, and to present course information such as resources, external links, project information, and frequently asked questions Wikis shift the focus to construction of knowledge, rather than presentation of information, often giving students an active role in the formation of knowledge Collaborative learning exercises are student centered and enable students to share authority and empower themselves with the responsibility of building on their foundational knowledge (Myers, 1991)
