Reducing the amount of food/yard waste you throw away may mean that you can downsize your garbage container-- and that can save you money.

Whether you are a Tacoma resident or a business, you can help reduce the amount of trash going to the landfill by using the City’s food and yard waste service. The collected material is then composted at a local composting facility.

Plastics: #3-7 plastic tubs & jars, #2 colored plastic bottles & jugs, #2 milk jugs, #1 soda, juice,

& water bottles, plastic bags & bubble wrap, and Styrofoam (only clean, white packing foam)

Cardboard & Paper: Corrugated cardboard, books for charity, newspapers, magazanies,

catalogs, phone books, & mixed paper

Batteries & Other Items: Household alkaline batteries, NiCad, lilon & other rechargable

batteries, cell phones (including batteries and chargers), printer & toner cartridges, used motor

oil, holiday lights, & packing peanuts

Electronics: City of Tacoma partners with E-Cycle Washington to provide recycling of

televisions, computers, monitors, tablets, e-readers, & portable DVD players. Bring to the

Goodwill Donation Station located at the Recycle Center.

to the Recycling Center at the Tacoma Transfer & Recovery Center (3510

S. Mullen) and dispose of these items at no charge:

Did you know...Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world. 1 in 3 cigarette butts end up as litter. Cigarette butts seep toxic chemicals into our environment within hours of contact with water; the toxins released from one cigarette butt left in one gallon of water for one day will kill 80% of aquatic life added to that water. Cigarette litter can linger in the environment for as much as 25 years.
