the year with big wins at football games or expecting another team to advance to the state level, a new

generation of middle schoolers nervously finds their clique at the fish pond

or another seventh grade team steps onto the court for the first time.

Moments when elementary students cling to their mother’s hand or win awards at

the weekly Champs Assembly. The moments are the same every year. This year, the approach is different. The story is told as it happened, from a chronological

point of view. The months creep by slowly, but as a whole, the school year is a blur, with this book serving as the

timeline of the 2015-16 memories. It’s these life changing moments, the

moments we make, that eventually make us who we are.

The changing moments that encompass a school year are different for everyone. Whether it’s presenting your first genius hour presentation or being elected as a new student council officer, it’s these turning points in life that define our direction. CPR training or Read Across America Day might not seem like a big deal at the time, but it’s these small moments that influence who we become. It might not seem important to face a crowd full of Roughnecks at the homecoming pep rally, but for Nory Hearron [K] it’s a moment to remember. Nory and her grandparents served as the Grand Marshals of the homecoming parade as an exemplification as Roughneck Spirit Fighters. It’s a moment of recognition for a battle she’s facing that no parent ever wants for their child. “They didn’t know what it was,” father and Roughneck alumnus ‘93, Bryan Hearron said. “She had been sick for a while so we didn’t think it was cancer. She was lethargic and had no energy and would just lay around all day. Which was totally different than she had been 2 years prior.” It’s a moment of character shown by older brothers Connor [11] and Nate Hearron [9] as they selflessly support their sister and family in a time of need. It’s these moments that change their lives.

In , it’s an athlete’s nature to make the moments. Whether it’s sliding on the little league field on a rainy baseball practice day or completing a ropes obstacle course with your volleyball team, it’s these times that unify teammates and create friendships that last beyond high school. Learning to serve a volleyball or dribble a basketball are obvious skills that must be developed, but it’s a necessary component of an athlete’s repertoire. Splashing at field day with friends or developing eye-hand coordination by playing four square on the playground are activities that teach sportsmanship. It’s the moment in an intense game where every dribble and shot can determine the outcome of the game. It’s the moment when seniors shoulder the responsibility of a one point loss against district foe, Waskom. “It’s demoralizing to lose such a close game that you know you should have won,” Jeremy Patak [12] said. “It just makes you want to work harder so it doesn’t happen again.” Every loss and victory make up just a portion of the moments spent in a Roughneck uniform.

After trailing for the majority of the second half, Waskom’s senior point guard Kaleb Haynes drove to the basket, drew the foul, and made the shot to tie the game with less than 10 seconds left. He would later convert the free throw to give Waskom the 51 -50 lead. White Oak senior Landry Sheridan would rush down the court to heave the last second shot, but it wouldn’t fall. “It was hard because we had dug ourselves a hole the first quarter and worked so hard to come back,” Sheridan said. “We were winning most of the second half and then for them to make a free throw to win was tough because there was nothing you could do to guard him and make him miss.”

It’s our point in life, it’s the moments that make us. Whether it’s running in the Dopey

Challenge at Disney World or serving on a medical mission trip to Honduras, these are the instances that define your

character. Leading your team in competitive cheer or singing the national anthem at your twirling competition are

the times that determine what the future may hold. Fighting through a sickness that keeps you from the thing you love the

most or playing the tuba in hopes of finding a future career are the moments that will not be lost in this school year. It’s

a moment of remembrance for Suzanne Woodburn, who lost a courageous battle against cancer on May 11. It’s a moment of

carrying out her passion for teaching. “We have decided that the one thing Suzanne left undone is something we can finish,”

White Oak ISD Leadership team said. “She has been mentoring a student this year to prepare him for college. We want to honor

Suzanne and what she has given our students all of these years through this.” Through a district wide collaborative effort, Kyler

Dennison [12] embarks on his new journey in Oregon with the assistance of a scholarship totaling over $2,500. “There is no

greater tribute to her than to finish what she started,” assistant superintendent Mitzi Neely said. “She had dedicated her year

to teaching him the ins and outs of what he would need to know to be successful.” Even in the moments she felt her worst, helping Kyler reach his potential was the first thing on her mind. This was

her defining moment.

the 2016 school year, don’t forget that we beat Spring Hill by the largest margin in school history or that the journalism

team brought home their fifth consecutive state championship, but also remember the moment

that you made your first cut on your cat during anatomy dissections. Don’t forget what it felt like to desperately search for a friendly face at the

fish pond or the nerves you felt when you first donned an official Roughneck or Ladyneck jersey,

but also remember the moments that you ate lunch in the library with the inaugural Roughneck Tech Club. Don’t forget about the cup of water

you covered as you scampered across the grass in your last official field day of

elementary school, but also remember the evening you spent under the stars at the father/daughter

dance. Don’t forget about how scared you were on the first day

of school as your mother drove away or your reward for showing

the most generosity in your class, but always remember the

Grandparent’s Day program that you practiced for. When you are

battling through life, remember the wise words of your beloved

high school principal, telling you to “Do Right.” It’s also the moment

when hear “I Believe” in your head because he did. It’s the

moment you realize not only is this your last time to stand on

the stage as a Roughneck, but his too. It’s those life changing

moments, the moments we made, that made us who we

are.
