    LINER TERMINOLOGY

Bottle Neck - The dimension between the inside diameter of the bowl liner and outsidediameter of the main shaft sleeve on a Standard crusher. This dimension can be arestricting area when compared to the feed opening on the open side.

Bowl Liner - Secured inside of the bowl to protect it from wear.

Feed Opening Closed Side - The dimension representing the maximum feed openingwhen the mantle is closest to the bowl liner.

Feed Opening Open Side The dimension representing the maximum feed opening

when the mantle is farthest away from the bowl liner.

Filler Pieces Cast steel segments that are welded to the inside of the bowls onStandard crushers to reduce the quantity of backing when installing a fine or mediumbowl liner in a coarse bowl.

Head Wear Ring A conical rolled steel part that is usually supplied in segments that iswelded to the head below the mantle when using short liners in a SHORT HEAD

crusher. The head wear ring prevents erosion to the head from the discharge ofcrushed material in a short crushing chamber. The head wear ring is changed once fortwo to three mantle changes.

Locking Collar A threaded component which is bolted to the top of the SHORTHEAD onto which the locking nut is attached. The threads of the locking collar are lefthand.

Locking Nut A threaded component that is turned onto the locking collar to exert aclamping force on the mantle. The threads of the locking nut are left hand. The lockingnut is changed once for two to three mantle changes.

Locking Nut Cover A component which is threaded into the upper portion of thelocking nut SHORT HEAD to keep material from damaging the upper portion of thehead. The threads of the locking nut cover are left hand.

Lower Mantle On 5 and 7 foot crushers, the mantles are in two pieces, uppermantle and lower mantle. The two piece configuration reduces the mantle change outcost because most of the wear is done to the lower mantle. The upper mantle ischanged once for two to three lower mantle changes.

    SECTION 3D 3

Main Shaft Nut The locking mechanism on Standard crushers and 4 foot, 4 footand 5 foot SHORT HEAD with standard main shafts. The threads in the main shaftnut are right hand threads.

Main Shaft Sleeve Used on standard crushers and 4 foot, 4 foot and 5 footSHORT HEAD with standard main shafts. The main shaft sleeve protects the portionthat extends above the head. The main shaft sleeve is changed once for two to threemantle changes.

Mantle Covers the head of the crusher to protect it from wear. The 4 foot and

smaller crushers have a one piece mantle. The 5 foot and 7 foot crushers have twopiece mantles, upper and lower mantle.

Minimum Closed Side Setting Theoretically the tightest that a specific set of liners

can be set at. Due to fines in the feed, hardness of the rock, moisture, feed distributionand feed segregation it may not be possible to achieve the minimum closed side setting. The minimum operating closed side for any set of liners is when there is no adjustmentring movement, no excessive lube oil drain line temperatures or crusher stalling.

Maximum Closed Side A setting where the bowl is engaged into 1 to 2 threads of

    the adjustment ring.

Nip Angle - The angle that is developed between the surfaces of the bowl liner andmantle when the mantle is at its closest relationship to the bowl liner. Nip angles shouldnot exceed 23 degrees for best material flow through a crushing chamber.

Thru Bolt A means of retaining the bowl liner in the bowl with a straight bolt throughlugs on the bowl liner and into the bowl.

"U" Bolt The means of retaining the bowl liner in the bowl with a "U" shaped bolt

inserted under the hooks of the bowl liner and into the bowl.

Upper Mantle On 5 and 7 foot crushers, the mantle is in two pieces, upper mantleand lower mantle. The two piece configuration reduces the mantle change out costbecause most of the wear is done to the lower mantle. The upper mantle is changedonce for two to three lower mantle changes.

Torch Ring A sacrificial piece that is located between the main shaft sleeve and main

shaft nut which is burnt out with a torch to relieve the pressure on the mantle and allowthe main shaft nut to be loosened.

    METALLURGY CHOICES

There are different alloys that are commonly used for the Symons:

XT510 This is an 11% to 14% Hadfield manganese. XT510 replaces the Metso alloydesignation 0861-500. XT510 is used as an all-purpose liner in all secondary and finecrushing applications for the Symons crushers.

XT710 This is an 18% manganese chrome alloy and will typically provide longer lifethan the XT510 or XT610 manganese alloys. The XT710 replaces the old Metso 0861512, XT500 and MNK material designations. XT710 is used for abrasive applications inthe Symons 7 crusher.

XT720 This is a 22% manganese chrome alloy that will typically provide longer life

than the XT710 manganese. This material can only be applied in 5 foot crushers andsmaller and in applications where there is no tramp iron in the circuit. The XT720replaces the old Metso MNS material designation.

For typical applications refer to the table SYMONS CONE LINER ALLOYS ANDAPPLICATIONS.

    BASIC LINER SELECTION

    FEED SIZE IS KNOWN

To chose a liner combination when the top size of the feed is known, divide thethickness of the largest feed by 0.8 to get the required feed opening on the open side.

For example if the you are selecting a liner combination for a 5 ' Standard crusher andthe thickest piece is 8", divide 8" by 0.8 to get the required feed opening on the openside. (8" / 0.8 = 10"). Refer to the 5 ' Standard cavity tables and select a linercombination that has a feed opening on the open side that is close to 10". In this case a4830 6771 bowl liner and a 5013 6801 upper mantle with a 5013 7001 lower mantlewould be selected. Use the shaded liner combinations where ever possible as theseare the most common.

    KNOWING THE FEED OPENING

There are cases when the customer may want to know what the maximum size feed agiven feed opening can accept. To determine the maximum size piece that will fit in agiven feed opening on the open side, multiply the feed opening by 0.8.

For example if the liner combination for a 4 ' Standard coarse has a feed opening onthe open side of 9 5/8" (9.63") the thickest piece that could be fed to it would be about 7". Multiply the feed opening o the open side by 0.8, (9.63 X 0.8 = 7.7").

    4', 4 ' AND 5 ' SHORT HEADS WITHSTANDARD MAIN SHAFTS

The 4', 4 ' and 5 ' SHORT HEAD main shaft assemblies were designed to useStandard main shafts in order to provide the customer with a torch ring for easierremoval of the mantle. By using the Standard main shafts, common parts between theStandard crusher and the SHORT HEAD was also accomplished. The main shaft, torch ring, main shaft nut, feed plate and countershaft rotation are common between thetwo machines.

    The effective year of manufacture for the respective crushers are as follows;

4' crushers built in 1974 and after.

4 ' crushers built in 1979 and after.

5 ' crushers built in 1981 and after.

The following illustration shows the comparison between the old and new design.

    INSTALLING "U" BOLTS

In order to avoid hook breakage and or loosening of the bowl liner it is important toinstall the "U" bolts and washers properly.

9 Stack the washers as shown in the illustration; "U" Bolt and Washers.9 Use a fabric ply material for the rubber washers.9 Make sure that the washers are positioned so that the wider dimension from the

centerline is toward the outside of the bowl. The centerline of the "U" bolt holes arenot on the centerline of the washers. Refer to illustration; "U" Bolt Centerline.

    FILLER PIECES

Are cast steel segments that are welded to the inside of the bowls on Standard crushersto reduce the quantity of backing when installing a fine or medium bowl liner in a coarsebowl. By reducing the quantity of backing material to be poured, the chances ofshrinkage will be reduced. Shrinkage occurs in large cross section pours because thebacking cures from the inside and will pull away from the bowl and bowl liner. Ifshrinkage does take place, the gaps as a result of the shrinkage should be topped offwith additional backing.

The following table will show the filler piece part number and quantity for each crushersize and bowl and bowl liner combination.

    TAKING WEAR PROFILES

In order to properly answer any inquiry, it is important that the following information beincluded. Use the Wear Profile Analysis Form to record your information.

    1. Feed gradation.

    2. Type of feed (i.e. granite).

    3. Product gradation.

    4. Circuit diagram complete with screen cloth openings and all crusher settings.

    5. Part numbers of current mantle and bowl liner.

    6. Crusher power draw.

    7. Crusher capacity.

To operate continuously with liners having a crushing cavity unsuited to the operation, results in uneconomical wear of the liners, poor crushing efficiencyand, in some instances, abuse to the Crusher.

    To obtain a wear profile of the bowl liner and mantle proceed as follows;

    1. Torch Cut Through Mantle or Bowl Liner

    2. Trace Worn Contour on Cardboard or Heavy Paper Inserted in Cut

    3. Original Contour

Refer to the illustration; Obtaining Wear Contour.

    LINER UTILIZATION - SYMONS

The target amount of liner utilization on a Symons Cone is 60% to 65%. Wearingliners more than that can cause damage to the seats on the bowl and head as a resultof the liners flexing because of thin cross sections.

    To determine the amount of utilization proceed as follows;

Weigh the bowl liner and mantle prior to installation, record the weight.

After removal of the set of liners remove backing material and weigh each piece.

Subtract the worn weight from the new weight and divide the difference by the newweight to get the worn percentage.

    EXAMPLE:

    7 Foot SHORT HEAD

    Worn WeightsBowl Liner 48307581 2,525 Lbs.Mantle 5013 9001 1,940 Lbs.Total Weight 4,465 Lbs.

    Liner UtilizationBowl Liner (7,300 2,525) / 7,300 = 65.4%Mantle (4,850 1,940) / 4,850 = 60.0%Total (12,150 4,465) / 12,150 = 63.3%

Records should be kept and averaged over three or more sets of liners.

    CRUSHER CHAMBER PROFILING

Now it is possible to model the shape of the chamber without dismantling the crusher.By using NORDBERG-FOAM KIT it's easy to see how the mantle and bowl wear duringthe life of the liners. This process can be used on all cone type crushers. It also helpsto solve the problem cases.

The spare part number of the Nordberg-Foam Kit is 803582.

    Instructions:

1.) Set the plastic sheath into the chamber.

2.) Move the sheath to the closed side position in the chamber.

    3.) Mix 0.35 kg A-component and 0.5 kg B-component (half tin A&B).

4.) Pour out mixed A+B components into the sheath.

5.) After expansion of the foam move down the main shaft and remove the sheath.

6.) Draw worn contour by using the expanded foam sheath or send the filled sheath(or drawing) to Metso

    NORDBERG-FOAM KIT contains:

    - A-component 0.7 kg/tin- B-component 1.0 kg/tin- plastic sheath 2.0 m
