McDonnell Wealth Management is an independent registered investment
advisor that helps clients accumulate, preserve and transfer wealth through
comprehensive financial planning. Our goal is to organize and simplify our
clients’ financial lives, so their wealth becomes a tool to accomplish what
is most important to them. We take an integrated approach to wealth
management, giving consideration to our clients’ investments, tax situation,
estate, retirement plans and exposure to risk. Each client receives a
written, personalized financial plan focusing on each key element, and
together we frequently review progress toward achieving both their

the extra step to demonstrate professionalism by voluntarily submitting to the rigorous CFP® certification process that includes
demanding education, examination, experience and ethical requirements. With a combined 30 plus years of advising clients,

Joseph J. McDonnell,

Principal
There are few people who can
truly call themselves a personal
Chief Financial Officer, having
studied and practiced for years on the tax implications
of investments, estates, trusts and retirement. Joe is one
of those consummate professionals. He has spent over
25 years as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and advisor
to a myriad of clients, including individuals, business owners,
corporations, non-profits, associations, school districts and
municipalities. He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®)
and a Personal Financial Specialist (PFS®), a designation
earned only by current CPA’s who have the powerful
combination of extensive tax expertise and comprehensive
knowledge of financial planning. Joe also specializes in
estate tax returns, tax efficient estate planning and elder
law issues. He received his MBA in Finance from
DePaul University in Chicago, IL.
Christopher J. McDonnell,
CFP®
Principal
Chris is a Certified Financial Planner
(CFP®) and has extensive experience
creating comprehensive financial
plans for families and business owners. He received his
MBA in Finance from American University in
Washington, DC, focusing his studies on advanced portfolio
management, investment analysis and risk mitigation
techniques. After graduate school, Chris started his
investment advisory career in the Global Wealth Management
group of one of Wall Street’s largest research firms. He has
studied and been trained to use statistical analysis to design
multi-faceted investment portfolios and adhere to disciplines
that help monitor and control risk. In addition, he has unique
experience working with non-profits and company 401(k)
plans. He was a two-time captain and student-athlete on
the football team at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
As an active alum, he sits on the Drake University Chicago
Alumni Advisory Board and the Drake University SJMC
National Advisory Council.

marketplace demand more than that. We construct an investment portfolio where each piece, each component, is there for a
reason. Investments are vehicles to help you get from today to where you ideally would like to be in the future. As a result,
when we make recommendations and investment decisions for our clients, we do so deliberately, and with a purpose.
Globally balanced, well diversified portfolios reduce risk History has demonstrated that risk and return are related, and investors receive compensation in proportion to the risk they
take. Modern Portfolio Theory allows investors to reduce risk and may increase return through the use of globally balanced,
well diversified portfolios with exposure to various asset classes. Individual asset classes move in random, unpredictable
patterns and no asset class, size or style is always the best performer. Chasing performance leads to uncompensated risk
and volatility that cuts into portfolio growth. The globally balanced approach allows investors to “diversify away” the
uncompensated risk inherent in stand-alone assets and “smooth” performance.
It’s not about timing the market, but having time in the marketMarkets work. Speculation is futile. Rather than attempting to chase trends, instincts and emotions, we employ a long-term
