Reflections for Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we continue to hear the Gospel of Mark proclaimed. In today’s reading, Jesus heals a man

who was deaf and had a speech impediment. This is a story about Jesus’ healing power, and in it we find

clues about our understanding of sacrament. We are struck by the physical means used to heal the man, the use of spittle and touch. The Church continues to celebrate the sacraments using physical means. In the Sacrament of Baptism, water and oil are used to show the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, we are anointed with holy oil on the forehead and the hands. In the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. We are a sacramental people who believe that God’s grace is given to us through these

physical signs.

Some, however, see in this Gospel an image of the proclamation of the good news of Jesus to the Gentiles. The geographic references tell us that Jesus is journeying through Gentile territory. Jesus had previously visited this region and healed a person possessed by a demon. Jesus was already famous there, which explains why people brought the deaf man to him. The story that precedes this reading in Mark’s Gospel sets the stage. Jesus encounters a

Gentile, a Syrophoenician woman who asks him to heal her demon-possessed daughter. Jesus engages her in a dialogue about not feeding to dogs the food intended for children. Jesus is struck by the woman’s

great faith when she replies that even dogs eat the food that falls from the table, and he heals her daughter immediately. The faith of this Greek woman compels Jesus to respond to her plea.

Mark shows that Jesus’ own mission affirms the early Church’s mission to the Gentiles. This was a

significant issue to the early Christian community, which found that the good news of Jesus took root and spread quickly among the Gentiles. Yet there is an irony in the story of healing that Mark tells. Jesus gives the man the gift of speech, but then tells him not to use it. Jesus asks that the news of his healing power, which is evidence of his identity as the Messiah, not be spread. This is a recurring motif in Mark’s Gospel and is sometimes called the “messianic secret.”

Following is an article from our Cohort Committee for the diocesan Faith in Our Future program. Pope Francis has stated “that in ministry, the church must go beyond the status quo.” Being in a cohort

is a way to begin a new parish life cycle…to reach more people, maximize the use of parish facilities, to serve

and to multiply community impact. Cohort 22, comprising the parishes of St. Anthony’s, St. Dominic’s, St.

Mary of the Lake, and Visitation Church, has been commissioned to work on a collaboration model. One of our directives is to develop an awareness initiative regarding the needs of the homeless. And so we are!!

In the next few weeks, you will be seeing information on the who, what, why and where of homelessness (and you may be surprised). We will keep you updated with existing programs and resources, and we will post ways that you can advocate for the poor and help – right here in Ocean County. Our vision is that we will bring together our communities utilizing the talents of our parishioners in order to help one another in need.

We pray that our service is met with open hearts and minds. As we go forward on this part of the journey, remember, it is not “What can I do?” or “What can you do?”, but “What can WE do?” Let us open our

eyes and ears and hearts to the love of God so we may truly see Christ in one another. Stay Tuned!!

WWe RRemember

On this 16th anniversary of September 11, pause for a moment. If you can, consider attending the memorial being held at Windward Beach Monday, September 11th at 6:00 PM. Following the advice of our Holy Father, coming together both as a community and as the faithful, we can indeed help provide healing for a world in darkness and become beacons for the light of Christ’s truth. INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK

Interfaith Hospitality Network has been a part of Ocean County for 21 years as a non-profit, interfaith ministry committed to providing shelter, meals and assistance to homeless families. We host families of up to 14 guests 4 to 5 times a year for a week in Guild Hall at Saint Mary of the Lake Rectory Basement in Lakewood. These are parents who work, but don’t make enough to pay rent and buy food for their families; the working poor of Ocean

County We supply a safe place for them to sleep, food for the week and then they move on to the next church. Our HOPE for each of our families is that within 3 to 7 months they acquire housing. Saint Mary of the Lake Parish is inviting us to become a SUPPORT Parish. We need volunteers in different capacities: cooking dinner, sitting at dinner time and hospitality from 6 pm to 8:30 pm. Others spend the night just sleeping to provide a sense of security for our families from 8:30 pm to 7 am. All volunteers are in pairs for the safety of our children and training with an experienced volunteer is provided. A Ministry of Presence, we serve Our Lord by helping those less fortunate. Our next Host Week begins Sunday, October 14, 2018 and our Guests will stay until Sunday, October 21, 2018. The commitment of time from each volunteer is but a few hours for just one day during that week. Please consider becoming a part of Interfaith Hospitality Network. If you would like to learn more about how you can help please call Pat Rainer 732-300 8288 or email [email protected]. This is a wonderful opportunity to work together as a Faith in Our Future Cohort and that truly can move mountains!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY September has shifted us into high gear. Take a look:

We are currently assisting the Greenbriar I flood victims with housing. There are about 45 houses that were catastrophically damaged and we have been able to place some families in much safer accommodations. Dealing with availability and affordability of local motels during summer months has been a challenge, but we did it!

Energy Assistance Day September 13. Stop in if you have any questions. You may be surprised. Walk for the Poor Saturday September 15 at the Manasquan Reservoir. Join us and enjoy! We will be hosting a dinner on Saturday September 22 for the folks from Greenbriar. Hats, gloves, scarves and mitten collection for the school children. (September thru October) Assistance towards the children’s lunch program in the township schools.

We can be extraordinary at being ordinary. But it is the ordinary things we do each day that make us all extraordinary. This is a good time for the light of the laity of the Catholic Church to shine through the darkness. Please continue to help us shine. You are extraordinary! “It is not the most learned who bear the most fruit, but those who are replenished with the most grace from God. Now who receives more grace than those who are united to his goodness as you are doing, bearing lovingly the duty which he has entrusted to you?”– St. Vincent de Paul
