MICHAEL ERIC DYSON, named by Essence magazine as one of the 40 most inspiring African- Americans - and by Ebony magazine as one of the 100 most influential black Americans - is one of the nation’s most renowned public intellectuals. When one hears Dyson’s name, one thinks of the many hats he wears: prolific author, scholar, public intellectual, ordained minister, media commentator and talk radio show host. In his books, Dyson has taken on some of the toughest and most controversial issues of our day. Some of these topics include Martin Luther King, Jr.’s radical legacy, in I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr.; the virtues and crises of hip- hop culture in Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur; racial conflict and black identity in Race Rules: Navigating the Color Line; the political and racial fallout from Hurricane Katrina in Come Hell or High Water: Hurricane Katrina and the Color of Disaster; Debating Race, a collection of his previously unpublished intellectual encounters--cordial and combative--with some of today’s most influential thinkers and politicians; to his most recent work, The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America in which Dyson explores how President Obama has changed how he talks about race over the past seven years--from the protests in Ferguson to the church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, to the controversy over the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates. While Dyson has taught at some of the nation’s most prestigious universities - including Brown, UNC at Chapel Hill, U. Penn and Columbia - his influence has carried far beyond the academy into prisons and bookstores, political conventions and union halls, and church sanctuaries and lecture halls across the world. Dyson has also taken the media by storm through appearances on The Today Show, Nightline, O’Reilly Factor, The Tavis Smiley Show and Real Time with Bill Maher - and he has cemented his star appeal on such shows as Rap City, Def Poetry Jam and The Colbert Report. Dyson is also the host of the syndicated radio show, The Michael Eric Dyson Show, which addresses social, cultural and political issues in a contemporary vein. Dyson’s powerful scholarship has won him legions of admirers and has made him what the Washington Post terms a “superstar professor.” His fearless and fiery oratory led the Chronicle of Higher Education to declare that with his rhetorical gifts he “can rock classroom and chapel alike.” Dyson’s eloquent writing inspired Vanity Fair magazine to describe him as “one of the most graceful and lucid intellectuals writing on race and politics today.” Dr. Dyson is presently University Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University. His legendary rise - from welfare father to Princeton Ph.D., from church pastor to college professor, from a factory worker who didn’t start college until he was 21 to a figure who has become what writer Naomi Wolf terms “the ideal public intellectual of our time” is nothing short of a glorious testimony to God’s grace and promise. DR.

Some of these topics include Martin Luther King, Jr.’s radical legacy, in I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr.; the virtues and crises of hip-hop culture in Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur; racial conflict and black identity in Race Rules: Navigating the Color Line; the political and racial fallout from Hurricane Katrina in Come Hell or High Water: Hurricane Katrina and the Color of Disaster; Debating Race, a collection of his previously unpublished intellectual encounters--cordial and combative--with some of today’s most influential thinkers and politicians; to his most recent work, The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America in which Dyson explores how President Obama has changed how he talks about race over the past seven years--from the protests in Ferguson to the church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, to the controversy over the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.

GRACE AT WORSHIPRIGHT HAND OF FELLOWSHIP WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR

Sunday, February 21, 2016 My Loved Ones,

As we know, February is Black History Month and today, we celebrate our heritage as African Americans. It is indeed a noble legacy that we inherit, one peppered with pain, struggle and sacrifice. The achievements we celebrate cannot be fully understood without an appreciation of the blood, sweat and tears that made it

possible. Our celebration, though it has its ambivalence (“we’ve come a mighty long way, but still have a long way to go” to we fulfill our promise and potential), we continue our struggle.

Today’s celebration must be viewed as an inspiration to not give up the fight. Ours is a responsibility to interpret the meaning of our struggle and pass it on to a new generation and encourage them to continue the struggle. Our interpre-tation must include our understanding of how God has been faithful to us in the rising and falling of the uneven terrain of our journey toward full inclusion in America. “God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path we pray.”

We welcome Dr. Eric Michael Dyson to our pulpit this morning as our Heritage Sunday speaker. His latest book, “The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America” is available this morning in the book store. He will be signing books after the 9:30am and 11:30am services. We are grateful for his presence.

This Friday evening, February 26, at 7:00pm, the Women’s Ministry will host their Winter WOW Service. They are asking all the women of Grace to join them and to invite your female family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers to a spirit-filled evening of praise and worship.

Be blessed,

Pastor
