Called and Gifted What exactly is this program all about. Well, in a nut shell it is to help you to recognize the gifts that God has endowed you with and then to go forth and use those gifts for your family and for your parish family. But what sometimes keeps us from moving forward is ‘fear’. That is what today’s Gospel is about. Like Peter, when we are focus on Christ, we are able to conquer the storms that invade our life and like Peter, when our focus is not on Christ, we find ourselves sinking in the depths of anxiety, despair and fear. So Called and Gifted is really about helping us to keep our focus on Christ by using the gifts we have been given. What is Called and Gifted? It is the wise and responsible use of the gifts God has entrusted to each of us. It is believing that God has created each of us with unique abilities and attributes which make us who we are. Why is This Important? Our lives have real meaning only when we use our gifts in accordance with God’s will. As we grow in stewardship, we grow in our relationship with God. How Can I Be a Good Steward of Gifts? Put God at the center of your life. We are given opportunities each day to be good stewards. No gift is greater than time, and yet, nothing is so easy to waste. Time spent in prayer, nurturing relationships or just enjoy-ing the world’s beauty is time well spent. What are My Gifts? We often hold back from recognizing our gifts because of a narrow definition of “talent.” We think “talented people” are extraordinary achievers or have easily identifiable gifts, such as music or art. Talents include being a good listener, being able to organize people, relating well to children or teens, and being patient with others. As Christians, we recognize that our gifts are meant to be cultivated and shared with others through family and friends, church, community and with the world. How Can I Be a Good Steward of My Gifts? Begin by recognizing the gifts you have been given. Be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Let go of preconceived ideas about yourself. Be still and listen with the “ear of the heart.” An Invitation to Action Pray or meditate on the gifts God has bless you with; get involved with fellowship and faith sharing events at church; it is a great way to get to know your church family; but most of all, then sign up and attend the Called and Gifted seminar on August 18 & 19 at St. Gerard Catholic Church; you will be glad you did.

Greetings Parishioners! Last Sunday, Blanca and I attended a pre-marriage program called Bright Beginnings at St. Faustina Parish in Warren. The place was packed with couples preparing to be married in the Archdiocese of Detroit. It was very enlightening and inspiring as a young adult to see so many couples. We are not the only ones! After our wedding on December 29th of this year, Blanca and I look forward to sharing our faith as a married couple. One of the many ways we will do that is through music ministry. Blanca at her saxophone and I behind the piano, playing music for the glory of God. I encourage and invite couples both young and old to share their faith life together through music. It is a great way to pray, give back to God and the community and spread the contagious love of Jesus Christ!

Next Sunday’s Scriptures A reflection on the readings for Mass Sunday, August 20

God offers salvation to all who have faith in him and follow his ways. The Lord welcomes to the kingdom all who believe in him and follow him. His mercy and love is extended to all. Let us strive not to focus on each other’s differences, but to view others through the eyes of Jesus, and seek to celebrate that we are all children of God by reaching out to one another with love and kindness. The first reading, Isaiah 56:1, 6-7, speaks of God’s gift of salvation being offered to all people. The second reading, Romans 11:13-15, 29-32, reminds us that the gifts and call of God are irrevocable. In the Gospel, Matthew 15:21-28, Jesus heals the daughter of a Canaanite woman because of the woman’s great faith in him.

QUESTION: The woman in this story was persistent in prayer. For what do you pray persistently?

Rooted Registration

Registration is open for our Rooted Youth Group! Registering does not commit you to anything, however, it makes it easier to communicate about events involving the Youth and streamlines some of the paperwork for things like Jamboree, Fall

Retreat, and Steubenville. See the link on the parish website!

Adult Mentors Needed

Do you feel called to be present to the high school youth of our parish? We are currently looking for adults (21 and over) who feel that their gifts would fit well with being an adult mentor at Rooted meetings and events. You can be as committed as your schedule allows. Please contact Hallie Card for more information or to sign up.

New Young Adult Ministry We are excited to be adding programming for Young Adults (ages 19 - 35, married or single) to our parish this coming year. If you are interested in being on the email list to be notified about upcoming opportunities and events, please contact Hallie Card.

It is a very exciting time in Faith Formation with two new programs starting

in the fall! Little Lambs Story Hour is a weekly program for parents or caretakers of toddlers to meet with other adults while hearing Bible stories and doing crafts that will reinforce the lesson for the little ones.

Family Faith Formation is an elementary home study program supported with monthly large group meetings.

See the website for all of the details!

Faith Formation is in need of some good people!

We are looking for adults who are willing to step out of the boat in the form of a

catechist. There are a few open positions in 1st-8th grade. Being a catechist can be a

way to walk in Faith Formation with your child or grandchild, support our faith family at St. Jude and learn a little more about our

Catholic teachings and traditions. Our curriculum is laid out with lessons and

support materials and we promise to encourage you along the way! If you are interested in finding more about being a

catechist for one of our Sunday programs, call Mary Lippert.

CALLED & GIFTED WORKSHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF LANSING

The dates for the workshop (August 18-19) are getting closer and there has been great interest from many people in learning more about their charisms from the Holy Spirit and how to develop them. I think it is absolutely amazing that our great and loving God has invited us, his creatures, to take part in sharing his love with others and bringing about his kingdom. Each one of us is gifted with these special gifts and some may be brought forth for use at one time in our lives while other gifts are called for at another time. If you want to know how God is calling you in your own life, take the time to participate in a Called & Gifted workshop. To learn a bit more about the Called & Gifted Workshops check the Diocese of Lansing website (dioceseoflansing.org) to read about how the workshop changed the life of one woman. If you can’t come to the August workshop, you will also see dates for the workshops to be held in the Fall/Winter.

COMING SOON—Welcome Weekend ! As summer leans into Fall we know that the school year is about to return with all the other things that happen here at the parish. This includes our traditional celebration of Welcome Weekend on Septenber 9-10. Make sure you plan to participate in the events of the weekend including a social for everyone, introductions to our RCIA seekers, opportunities to sign up for new liturgical ministries including Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Mass Coordinators, Greeters, Ushers, and Eucharistic Ministers to the Homebound. Sign up sheets for training will be available. Please consider participating in the Mass in one or more of these ministries. The parish needs your participation to stay alive and welcoming. And since you are coming to Mass anyway, why not step up and minister?

Help Needed ASAP There is a group of ladies from a nearby Adult

Foster care home that come to the 11 AM Mass at St. Jude every week. Their caregivers need the assistance of a parishioner each week

to help push the wheelchairs into and out of church. We have lost some of our volunteers due to

illness. We desperately need others to take a turn about once a month. Training is provided. Please call Terry

Humenik if you can help.

The family of Tom Mauro would like to thank St. Jude and the volunteers who made and served the funeral dinner for us. It was greatly appreciated. The Mauro family Serving Smiles to Seniors: All Senior citizens are invited to a presentation by Delta Dental, Michigan office of Retirement Services, and TCOA at noon on Tuesday, August 22 at St. Jude. This special luncheon takes the place of the regular

Tuesday Senior Citizen lunch. There will be a presentation on oral health, lunch, bingo and prizes to celebrate good oral and overall health. You will also have an opportunity to learn how

to sign up to receive dental care.
