Pastoral Letter EPIPHANY: CHRIST REVEALED
This endearing story of visitors from the East following a star to look for a child king is depicted in numerous ways in various media. Each of us can vividly portray in our minds and tell others what happened, while biblical and historical scholars along with theologians will offer different versions that cause us to wonder what is really true. In the end, the comparisons and contrasts won’t really matter if the essence for why they visited is brought to the forefront: Journeys to find that God is always present and freely given to all. In our Second Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians today, we are given the crux of the meaning of Epiphany: “that the gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise of Christ Jesus through the gospel.” In other words, God no longer limits the faithful to His chosen race, but all that seek God in Christ become members of the same body of Christ. We now have the permission to accept our Sacrament of Baptism as the official call of God to not only love Him with all that we are, but to love all of His creation as He loves us no matter what their background. We can fully take on the honor of discipleship to follow in Jesus’ footsteps with courage and strength. We have His permission to proclaim Him as our Savior and to reach out to all those to whom He came to serve: The homeless, poor, hungry, incarcerated, sick, dying, impoverished and marginalized. It is even more important, now that we have put away our Christmas decorations and the manger scene. We must not let this time of goodwill fade into the past to be pulled out again next year. We must remind ourselves, as well as others that Jesus is present always, not just for particular seasons to celebrate. Poverty and times of distress do not get packed away, they remain each and every day that we awaken to a new dawn and continue through the night. As members of a community of faith, we have numerous opportunities to be in service of those in need at St. Joseph and throughout the Diocese of Orange. Let us make a commitment of time per month to reveal Christ to those less fortunate. Maybe it’s a visit to a nursing home, Catholic Worker, a medical center or helping at the St. Vincent de Paul office in the rear of the parish center. Whatever it is, let us always reveal Jesus so that everyone has an opportunity to realize the good of God in their lives. That’s a real Epiphany. Deacon Jim Merle

Prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family O Lord Jesus, you lived in the home of
Mary and Joseph in Nazareth. There you grew in age, wisdom and grace
as you prepared to fulfill your mission as our Redeemer.
We entrust our family to you. O Blessed Mary, you are the Mother of our
Savior. At Nazareth you cared for Jesus and nurtured Him in
the peace and joy of your home. We entrust our family to you.
O Saint Joseph, you provided a secure and loving home for Jesus and Mary, and gave us a model of fatherhood while
showing us the dignity of work. We entrust our family to you.
Holy Family, we consecrate ourselves and our family to you.
May we be completely united in a love that is lasting, faithful and open to the gift of new life. Help us to grow
in virtue, to forgive one another from our hearts, and to live in peace all our days. Keep us strong in faith,
persevering in prayer, diligent in our work, and generous toward those
in need. May our home, O Holy Family, truly become a domestic church
where we reflect your example in our daily life. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

PARISH BIBLE STUDY: The Feasts of Judaism We cannot fully understand Jesus apart from His Jewish
context. And our own Catholic Christian faith is profoundly illuminated when we understand how it is rooted in the Jewish
practices and beliefs of Jesus’s day. So our next parish Bible Study will focus on the Feasts of Judaism. This six-week study
will help us appreciate how celebrations like Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Weeks, and Booths shed crucial light
on God’s saving action in our Lord Jesus Christ.
This promises to be an eye-opening study which will strengthen your faith; please join in!

KNIGHTS OF CHARITY
ASSEMBLED IN AMERICA’S FIRST DIOCESE FOR THE 136TH SUPREME CONVENTION, KNIGHTS CELEBRATE THE ORDER’S MISSION AND ACHIEVEMENTS Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson delivers his annual report during the Supreme Convention’s opening business session Aug. 7. The 136th Supreme Convention Aug. 7-9 in Baltimore was a return to the basics. More than 2,000 Knights of Columbus, family members and guests gathered under the theme Knights of Charity, underscoring what has been a fundamental principle of the Order since its’ founding in 1882. Nearly 100 bishops and cardinals, as well as priests from around the world, were also present for concelebrated Masses and other events. A letter of greeting from Pope Francis, sent by the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, noted “the inseparable bond of faith and charity” that inspired Father Michael J. McGivney and which bears fruit today “in innumerable acts of charity undertaken often in quiet and unassuming ways by members of the local councils.” In the past fraternal year, Knights exceeded more than $185 million in charitable donations and logged a record 75.6 million volunteer hours. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson discussed these achievements and the Order’s future in his annual report during the opening business session Aug. 7. In addition to highlighting grassroots activities, ongoing partnerships and the new Faith in Action program model, the supreme knight emphasized last year’s hurricane relief efforts and the Order’s continued work to assist Christians in the Middle East. He also announced a new Marian prayer program featuring a pilgrim image titled Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians, and he congratulated the jurisdictions of Ukraine and South Korea on being designated the Order’s newest state council and territory, respectively. This year’s convention marked the first time that a supreme chaplain served as the host ordinary, as Archbishop William E. Lori welcomed Knights and guests to the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the premier see of the United States. Guests also had the opportunity to visit Baltimore’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, America’s first cathedral. It was there that Father McGivney was ordained to the priesthood in 1877, five years before he founded the Knights of Columbus.

Consecrate Your Family to the Holy Family!
On the Feast of the Holy Family, all members of our parish have the opportunity at Mass to consecrate your family to the Holy Family. We will pray together a prayer of consecration composed by Knights of Columbus Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori, through which we will entrust ourselves to the perfect son Jesus Christ; to Mary, the perfect mother; and to Joseph, the model for every father.
This consecration is more than just a one-day event. It is an intentional decision to dedicate your family’s life to God through the Holy Family. You are recognizing the truth that salvation history was changed forever by a family, and that through your family, your domestic Church, you are called to live their example.
To help everyone to ready themselves for this consecration we suggest these steps: As a family, discuss the importance of this consecration and why you
are doing it. Consider how your family can be a light of faith to others in 2019.
Celebrate Christmas with Jesus at the center.
Pray together as a family each day before the consecration. You can use the Prayer of Consecration (included in the bulletin), as well as offering your own prayers. For families with children, you might want to try a “please and thank you” prayer – each person asks God for something, and each person thanks God for something. Each person in the family should try to express one word of kindness or appreciation to each other family member each day leading up to the consecration.
Each member of your family is strongly encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, if you haven’t already done so during Advent.
