Telkom Business is on a journey to fi xed mobile convergence. At the centre of this drive and strategy are its business

customers. Telkom Business MD Dr Brian Armstrong says this means Telkom is not only focussed on keeping customers happy and working to retain them, but ensuring the tech-nological expertise to back that, along with tak-ing a partnering approach to its relationships.

Says Armstrong: “We see the future as fi xed-mobile convergence, as well as telecommunications and IT conver-gence. There are extensive gains to be made along this journey and Telkom Business wants to take its customer along with it.”

Telkom Business’ aims to be a market leader in both the fi xed-mobile and IT and telecoms convergence spaces.

The aim of fi xed-mobile convergence is to deliver a single, inte-grated product range that connects seamlessly between fi xed and wireless networks so that the user is presented with network-agnos-tic products and services.

Telkom’s journey to fi xed-mobile convergence has three phases. The fi rst was the launch of Telkom Business Mobile, which off ers mobile voice, data, messaging and value-added services.

The second, announced in June, is the commercial bundling of voice and data, fi xed and mobile off erings. Commercial bundling in-volves making bundles of mobile voice and data and fi xed voice and data available to clients in one bill, on one contract from one supplier.

The fi nal phase allows Telkom Business to present an integrated, converged fi xed and mobile product range that includes unifi ed communications. Unifi ed communications encompasses the inte-gration of real-time communications services like telephony, instant messaging, video conferencing, data sharing (eg interactive white-boards) and call control with non-real time services like like unifi ed messaging (sms, fax, voicemail, email). The vision of unifi ed com-munications is to provide a unifi ed user interface across multiple devices and media types.

Telkom Business well positioned to lead Convergence

Telkom Business, says Armstrong, is uniquely positioned to off er this gamut of services thanks to its fi xed line services, data centre off erings (Cybernest) and mo-bile solutions.

“No other company in South Africa has all three on the same scale that Telkom does,” states Armstrong. “In terms of capabilities, only Telkom has the facilities and expertise to move towards true fi xed-mobile conver-

gence, as well as IT and telecoms convergence.”These expertise and facilities are backed by a dedicated custom-

er focus and services capability.Says Armstrong: “Service is strategically aligned with support. Of-

fering a solution on its own does not address business needs. Our customer support teams diff erentiate Telkom from its competitors and ensure ongoing commitment and assistance from Telkom.

“The strategy behind Telkom Business mobile off erings,” he con-tinues, “is driven by understanding what businesses need – value, productivity, cost-savings, management of mobile services, conve-nience and service quality.

“Telkom Business’ mobile off ering is comprehensive and fl exible, appropriate for any size of business. Telkom is a trusted partner capable of tailoring and delivering such solutions to meets its cus-tomers’ needs,” he concludes.
