9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Rootstock Pre-Conference SymposiumRootstocks are important for tolerance to soil pests such asphylloxera, nematodes, and pathogenic soil fungi. In addition,rootstocks are often used to ameliorate soil limitations related tohigh or low soil pH, inadequate soil drainage, soil texture, etc.Viticultural performance of rootstocks is also important.Rootstocks must produce optimum vine balance to insure properfruit maturation and composition so that wine quality isappropriate for the intended market segment.

Use of rootstocks is increasing in grape production regions of theMidwestern Eastern US. For growers using rootstocks, rootstockselection is one of the most important considerations duringvineyard establishment. Poor rootstock performance can resultin failure of the vineyard or will require costly practices toovercome problems.

The goal of this symposium is to provide growers, winerypersonnel, and other interested parties with the latestinformation on rootstock selection and performance. Theinformation provided will be useful in the development ofefficient, productive, and profitable vineyards.

Those of you whoattended the last tasting will probably still have one or two of theRiedel Vinum Series glasses that were used at that event. Morethan likely you have broken the stems of a couple of the set of fourduring the past few years. For 2005, Don has graciously agreed toreturn to our Mid-America Wine and Grape Conference with thenewest innovation in the world of wine glassware, Riedel “O”Series. These are stemless and lead-free, but the precise same bowldesign as their Riedel Vinum Series, the glasses that we had atDon’s previous seminar. Maxmilian Riedel, the 11th generation,has developed his “O” Series wine tumbler and we will have thegreat opportunity on Saturday, February 5th to share the glassesas well as wines provided by The Beaulieu Vineyard and SterlingVineyards, two of Napa Valley’s most esteemed wineries. Theglasses for the event will be the Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir,Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. This will truly be a stunningglass tasting event to begin the 20th Annual Mid-America Wineand Grape Conference. Attendance will be limited.
