    (PRIDE).While this is the second

year or the Orange and BlackAair, it was originally theorganizations Coming Out Ball,an event aimed at giving peoplethe reedom to arrive as they are

without ear o judgment romthe other individuals. It thenmerged with Halloween.

Braxton Midyette, ormerpresident o PRIDE in the pasttwo years, said, [the event]really went well but it could bereally good i we could get more

involvement rom ever ybody. Healso made clear the event was oreveryone, not just those involvedin the gay, lesbian, bisexual, andtransgender community. It wasan event that aimed to reachdiversity at every level.

The Orange and Black Aairis steadily rising in popularity.Last year was the most successulits ever been, but were hoping toup those numbers this year, said

Josh Powell, the vice presidento PRIDE. Powell was the headorganizer or the event. He led a

group o volunteers who helpedorganize and design the ball.

Many students attending hadnever been beore and ound theexperience enjoyable. StudentTeodora Abarca, who was amongthose attending or the frst time, said the ball was really unbecause o the great musicand great atmosphere. Abarcashowed up to the ball as Waldoo the Wheres Waldo? ame.

Another student, KamiraStarling, who showed up to theball as a pirate, said it was a lot

o un. She said, Were all incostume. No one cares. You canbe whoever you want. Bothstudents plan on attending nextyears ball.

Starling and Abarca bothparticipated in the costumecontest that eatured ourcategories: Scariest, MostCreative, Queerest, and BestImpersonation. The winningcostumes were a ork wieldingninja, a Clark Kent outft hidingthe Superman uniorm, a Batmanand Robin duo, and a Lady Gaga

Every day, many o us go toclass, without a worry o thecosts o tuition that our parentssupport us with. But, manyother students are let with theear o not being able to payor daily classes and all victimto the burden that tuition costscan create. Although this is atroublesome issue, it only seemsto be growing as the economyslides deeper and deeper into adownward all.

According to the StakeYour Claim campaign, 60percent o Charlotte students usesome sort o fnancial aid. Thisyear, the need has grown by 30percent. The need or fnancialaid is becoming normal, andUNC Charlotte does not havethe money to support all thesestudents alone.

    This weekend, however,

students, aculty, and otherpeople rom the Charlottecommunity participated in a4.9 kilometer race to help raisemoney or students who maynot otherwise be back at UNCCharlotte in the spring.

It was an event called the4.NINERK and is new to

Charlotte this year. The eventraised more than $27,000. Allprofts made rom the race aregoing to beneft those students inneed, and will hopeully support

them enough to allow them tocontinue their education andprepare or their uture.

The 4.NINERK was anawesome way or us to really dosomething or our school andgive back, not to mention a good

workout with all o my riends!UNC Charlotte student AmandaBeck said.

With the help o an advertisingcampaign, known as Stake YourClaim, the 4.NINERK was wellpublicized around campus and inthe city o Charlotte. Stake YourClaim created advertisements, handouts, and even a statue oa miners pick at the entrance ocampus.

Student volunteers did theirpart handing out iers in keyareas around campus, includingthe outskirts o the StudentUnion, the Atkins Library, andProspector.

Its a great way or thestudents to really get involved

with some o the more benifcialprograms on campus, UNCCharlotte student Ethan Elyasiansaid.

Their eorts were provensuccessul this Saturday ataround 8 a.m. when over 600people came to run and walkover 3 miles in the pouring rain.

It was great to see so manypeople persevere through the weather and harsh conditions. Not only the runners, but themany volunteers that gave theirtime to help out, bystander andUNC Charlotte student ChrisWood said.

The race began at the StudentUnion and took participants ona trail through campus and amildly wooded area. The frstthree emale and male winnersin each age group won awards, but everyone enjoyed a ree BBQlunch, and music rom WNKS,KISS 95.1 ater the race.

At 11 a.m., some participantsstayed to watch the basketballteams scrimmage, got autographsrom various players and stayedto support Niner athletic teamsin Fan Day.

The race, was overall asuccess as it raised a signifcantamount to assist students withfnancial needs.

There are currently fve restrictions applied tosmoking on UNC Charlottes campus. Smokingis prohibited in all University buildings, in allresidence halls, in all University vehicles, and within25 linear eet o any building. Finally, smoking isonly allowed in designated smoking areas.

What about sidewalks and other paths toclasses? There is nothing more annoying than

walking to class straight through a cloud o smoke.First, smoke smells atrocious. Second, secondhandsmoke is dangerous. The Surgeon General estimatesthat secondhand smoke kills about 50,000 peopleevery year. But why do smokers consider it so rudeto ask them not to blow smoke on you? Blowingsmoke on other people is rude.

Girls might understand this aversion to smokebetter, because long hair traps the smell o smoke. All you have to do is walk down a sidewalk straightthrough a cloud o smoke, and your hair can smelllike it or the rest o the day. We did not choose tosmell like an ashtray.

Smoke can also cause problems or people withcertain health conditions such as asthma. Smokingaround people with such conditions is just plain

rude. It is important or smokers to consider theharm that they could be doing to other people.

According to a study done by the North CarolinaDepartment o Health and Human Services and

Blue Cross Blue Shield o North Carolina, the statespends around $289 million per year on people

who have been exposed to secondhand smoke.Smoking outside o the smoking areas on

campus also causes a littering problem. Smoking

areas contain cigarette butt disposal receptaclesthat could eliminate the problem. That way, every walkway on campus would not be covered incigarette butts.

UNC Charlotte ofcials should make a newregulation regarding smoking on sidewalks. InMay 2009 a bill was passed in the House oRepresentatives that bans smoking in all publicbars and restaurants. The new regulations will beput into eect on Jan. 2, 2010.

Pennsylvania has encountered much controversyover a proposed ban o smoking in all outdoorplaces on public universities. It would be a hardfght to win, but hopeully, there will be a ban onsmoking on public universities in North Carolina.

While I do thin k that UNC Charlotte should bea completely smoke ree campus, I do realize thedifculty o enacting such a plan. The university iskind enough to provide several designated smokingareas on campus, and I highly suggest that smokersuse them.

It is much easier or non-smokers to avoid these

certain areas, tha n to avoid every smoker that walksdown a sidewalk.

EBay is a wonderul website to sell some oldmovies or buy some really cheap CDs. Its a great

website to buy or sell almost anything. However, with such a broad range o rules many peopleattempt to push the limits.

According to Daily Mail, a 10-year-old Britishgirl placed her 61-year-old grandmother up or saleon the auction website. The young girl describedher as rare, annoying and moans a lot. Sincethese qualities were not too appealing, she addedthat she was also very cuddly, loves word searches, and enjoys drinking tea.

While this seems really ridiculous and unny allat the same time, there were actually bids or thegrandmother. In act, there were 27 bids, attractingmore than $3,500. Unortunately or those 27bidders and the 10-year-old girl, eBay took the

woman o the auction site. EBay spokeswoman,Jenny Thomas, explained eBay does not allow the

listing o any human being on the site. It is alsoillegal to buy or sell human organs. One man triedto see sell his kidney, but eBay did not approve.

Strangely enough, the 10-year-old girl andorgan man were not the frst to try to sell bodiesor body parts on the site. Recently a couple tried tosell their baby or one euro, supposedly as a joke. The baby was not sold but instead taken by socialservices while the parents were investigated. Theylater received their baby back.

Another case came this past June, a man triedto sell his athers ashes. Thankully, there were nobids, probably because the description read Hereare the ashes o my ather, an adulterer who let a

wie, two children and just $40 in pocket. Whathappened to people taking their rustration out atthe dinner table or in counseling? Moreover, whyare there actually bids on such absurd items?

Even though there are rules, such as no sellingo human beings and body parts, people still placesome ridiculous items on the website.

Over the years strange things like toenailclippings were sold or a dollar per set. Someonepicked up Britney Spears gum at a London hoteland sold it or $263. A man even tried to sell a ghostthat was apparently terrorizing him, so he decidedto capture it in a jar and sell it on eBay. I wonder ieBay considered that as sale o a human being?

Although, I love when people sell ood thatthey think resembles someone amous. One selleroered a grilled cheese sandwich, which supposedlythe Virgin Mary had appeared to her. Someoneactually bought the sandwich or $28,000.

Even though these examples all on theridiculously unny side, some items are just plain

wrong. For instance, some girls are actuallyauctioning themselves as imaginary girlriends. The winning bidder receives pictures and lovingletters rom the girl, which the men can use to

pretend they have a girlriend. Both sides othis bother me. First, what kind o girl sells herrelationship status to the highest bidder? And

what kind o guy is low enough to purchase animaginary girlriend?

Sadly enough, an 18-year-old British gi rl sold hervirginity on eBay. I guess this answers my previousquestion. The oer was bought by a businessman

who agreed to give the girl the money without actually takthe service.

    While thesestories create verye n t e r t a i n i n gheadlines andlaughs, somethings are notmeant or eBay.Your best betis to stick withselling those

    old DVDs andCDs.

When the school year started student eesand tuition were increased on how the schoolsmoney would be spent. Proessors now requirestudents to print out their own syllabi and advi-sors request that students bring their own majorguideline sheets to meetings, all in an attempt tosave money. But, on Oct. 15, the Student Union,

which is partially unded by student ees, had

brand new at screens in the elevators.Theres nothing wrong with televisions at

school. In about every building on campus thereare screens that display helpul inormation suchas upcoming events, which is the same purpose othe Student Union televisions. Lyndsay Richter, marketing director or Student Union, explains, the elevator screens will unction primarily as

wayfnding, linked into a dai ly event schedule tohelp visitors fnd their meetings or events o theday.

What I dont understand is how everyone isgoing to see that inormation on an elevator ride.First, not everyone rides the elevator. Second,an elevator ride last fve seconds, what inorma-tion can possibly be absorbed in that amount otime.

The original plan was to have a screen outsideeach elevator on every oor. That would mean

fve at screens on each level, not including the11 screens already located throughout the build-ing. Mark Shropshire assures that, This savedthe Student Union thousands o dollars by notpurchasing fve screen and fve Mac Minis oreach level and installing the cabling through frerate walls o the elevator shats.

From an outside perspective, this still seemslike a ridiculous amount o televisions, especiallyknowing that the average amount o a screen andMac Mini hardware connection cost $3000.

Richter explains that Digital signage saveson printing costs o posters and yers, contrib-utes to the aesthetic appearance and green initia-tives o the acility, and the user-riendly technol-ogy makes it easy and efcient to update contentrom a logistical standpoint.

How much are we saving by printing our ownsyllabi at home? I dont think the amount equalsout.

The reasoning behind this decision seemslogical in the sense that it saves money in someareas, however, more money could be saved bynot having them there at all. As previously stat-ed, the original plan was to have a at screen onevery oor, but why is that necessary, i thereare already 11 screens throughout the building, then that means they are located in ofces andin places where people are able to see importantinormation.

For the visitors or students, a television onthe main oor would serve the same purposeas the ones in the elevators. Most people comein through the main entrance, and i someoneis lost the logical thing to do is go to the inor-mation desk, which is located on the main oor, right next to the main entrance.

To say people would go to the elevator to fg-ure out where their meeting is at is a ar stretch.Keep the inormation screens on the main oor

where most the trafc ows and put some musicin the elevators, like most places. This appears tobe the cheapest option.

Earlier this month, a 16-year-old male stu-dent was kicked out o his high school in Geor-

gia because he was wearing womens clothing toclass. Now, the frst question that popped intomy head when I heard this story was, What washe wearing that got the school ofcials so upsetthat caused him to get kicked out o school?

Even though this is not a common problemthat we hear about every week like Octo-mom,it still makes you wonder how socially acceptablecross-dressing is in our schools and most impor-tantly our society. You cant deny that it attractsattention when you see a man wearing the latest

Jimmy Choos with paints that are so tight youhope you dont stare long enough to see them ripin public.

Although it is not a social norm to see male oremales dressing like the opposite sex in public,it still deserves our respect because at the end othe day we all dress according to how we eel.

When I moved to Miami and saw or the frsttime men and women cross-dressing, I have to

say that I was a little shocked and at the sametime, jealous.

I wasnt jealous because o the clothes theywere wearing, but the confdence and sel-esteemthat allows them to wear what they are wearingknowing that people will inevitably stop and

stare at them to observe what they would onlysee normally on TV. Now we all remember whathigh school was like; or many o us it was better

just to blend in instead o standing out.But in the case o Jonathan Escobar the stu-

    dent in Georgia who was denied access to at-tending class because o his amine clothing;

what right do we have to tell him or anybody ingeneral in how they should dress?

I was curious to know what other peoplethought o cross-dressing in public so I asked se-nior Marina Michael, who is here or a year romCairo, Egypt and she explained, They can do

whatever they want as long as they are not harm-ing anybody its okay.

She makes a great point. I can easily wear at-shirt that can say something sexual or anythingo that nature towards women and women wouldeel oended and upset to what I was wearing. Now, i the girl gets upset over the guy who is

wearing the new Fendi bag that she cant aord, then thats another story to write about.

I think it should be a mutual agreement where we as the public should be more open

but accepting o cross-dressers, and at the sametime the person who is cross-dressing should bea conservative at frst in taking into consider-ation o the public so they dont get so reakedout about.

Hype is sometimes the major thing that candoom a horror movie, as one person always seemsto make the movie bigger and scarier than itseems. Im not here to do that, but to try totell you that Paramount and Dreamworksnewest flm Paranormal Activity is oneo the best and simple horror movies thisreporter has ever seen.

Beore I even get more in depth, let me just say that I have (honestly) never yelledduring a horror movie, but I did multipletimes last Friday during my viewing o thisflm and was let shaken upon the flmsterriying conclusion.

The flm centers on a young couple,Katie and Micah, who are haunted by asupernatural presence in their home. At frstthey are not sure whether the presence isa dog, rowdy kids making noise, or Katies

worst ears realized. The flm mentions shehas had problems with strange occurrencesin the middle o the night since she waseight, but they have laid dormant or mosto her lie.

Micah suggests having a camera in thebedroom (insert pun here), with the goalo trying to document what is happening in

the house as it is always happening while theyre

asleep. From this point the flm takes o and everytime the couple alls asleep the demon begins tomake his presence known even more. He starts

out with simple ways o scaring Katie and Micah,

such as shaking the chandelier or stamping on thewooden stairs loudly. As the flm progresses the attacks become

much more intense with the covers being thrownrom theirbed (whiletheyre bothast asleep) orKatie strangely

waking up inthe middle othe night andeerily standingo Micah orover two hours.I wont gointo any moredetail, but theending maybe one o thescariest thingsI have ever

    witnessed.Some may

criticize theflm as beingvery basicand simplyollowing a

ormula, as the flm moves along with attacks

happen at night, and then the couple discussesthem during the day.I however, dont eel that those criticisms

are just, since the demon does attack during theday. Also, the dialogue during the scenes is veryimportant because it plays a key role in the flmsoverall message, which is that ear can maniestitsel rom anything. The director tried to conveythis because hes been araid o ghosts his entirelie and he wanted to bring his ear to lie, on thebig screen.

I call this flm a masterpiece not only becauseo how much it scares you or makes you jump, but also what it was able to achieve with the littleresources it really had. The flms budget was only ameager $15,000, but as o now the flm has alreadymade nearly $50,000 in box-ofce revenue.

This movie is this decades Blair WitchProject, as it proves that you dont need all theHollywood magic to scare the audience, plus italso keys on the use o a single camera to really geta personal eel.

It all boils down to suspense, sound, andpresentation. This movie excels in all these areasand may be the scariest movie to come or a verylong time. I suggest you see it i youre a an o horroror suspense movies. However, this flm may not beor everyone, as during my show a woman ran outcrying because she could not take anymore.

As I was walking to the Student Union on Oct. 19, I

was looking orward to an up-and-coming amily band oour siblings rom Illinois, The Jypsis, I couldnt help but wonder, what image would this country/olk band have?I had an idea o course, but as soon as I met the band itcompletely dissolved aterward.

Illinois-based band showcases their own blend of multiple genres of music to our campus

    DEvin PHilliPSStaff Writer

In our generation, there is a small percentage o bands that try tokeep the spirit o rock n roll alive. Luckily, The Whigs are one othose select bands that try to keep that attitude.

Julian Dorio, Parker Gispert, and Timothy Deaux are the threemembers o the Whigs. The band hasalready been exposed to a nationalaudience by being on The Tonight Show

    with Conan OBrien, Jimmy Kimmel

Live, and The Late Show with DavidLetterman. The band are also no strangers to

music estivals, by playing at T in thePark, Fuji Rock, and Lollapalooza, even opening or Kings o Leon earlierthis year. The Atlanta-based indie rocktrio has already released two records oo ATO records. In addition, the bandplans on releasing their new album, Inthe Dark in 2010.

The band has recently released asingle called In the Dark. It is a unand upbeat single. The guitars ris,

while basic, add a strong kick to themusic, emphasizing their sound. Whiletheir lyrics are simplistic, they work well

with the overall attitude the band tries toconvey through their song.

The voice o the lead singer doesntnecessarily stand out, but he is stil l a good

singer. With a baseline going up and down in a soothing pattern, itstands out a lot in this single. While the drums are a little unnoticed, they add the steady rhythm needed complete the overall sound othe song.

Though The Whigs arent doing anything dierent rom theindie bands o recent memory, they are still making quality music.

In The Dark is a simple and catchy song that is perect to playduring a late night drive.

While this group will probably not be the next Kings o Leon orThe Strokes, they do have potential or making a bigger impact inthe world o independent music. All the group needs is to develop aunique sound to make them stand out.

The Whigs will be heading a tour, eaturing other bands suchThe Features, The Dead Trees, and Mean Creek, making stops inboth the Carolinas. On Dec. 14, the band travels to Chapel Hill toplay at the Local 506. On Dec. 15, the band will also be in Charlestonat the Poor House. For more inormation on this band, check out

For years Americans havebeen told o the health beneftso soy. Studies have shown thateating a diet rich in soy can lead toa decreased risk o heart disease, high cholesterol and even breastand prostate cancer.

However there is a disclaimer:only oods containing soyprotein are applicable to thehealth claims. Thereore onlyood labeled as whole soy orsoy protein oers these healthbenefts.

There has been recentconcern that soy products maycontain estrogen compoundsthat could potentially causehormonal problems. While moreresearch still needs to be done,soynutrition.com claims that thisis a myth. While the isoavonesin soy are plant estrogen, theyare very dierent rom estrogenand thereore do not aect it.

Soynutrition.com also statesthat clinical studies do showthat neither soy oods norisoavones aect serum levelso testosterone or estrogen. However, it not only aects thelevels o the hormones, it mayaect other unctions.

There is some concern aboutsoy increasing the risk o breastcancer. According to JoanSalge Blakes textbook aboutnutrition, Nutrition and You,the isoavones may initiate the

production o cancer cells. In Nutrition and You,

Salge Blake wrote, There issome concern that once theisoavones are bound to theestrogen receptors, they caninitiate the production o cancercells, which can raise the risk obreast ca ncer.

This has also led to concernthat soy can lead to inertilityin women. Soy phytoestrogens

disrupt endocrine unctionand have the potential to causeinertility and to promote breastcancer in adult women.

The American Cancer societyadvises women who already havebreast cancer to avoid eatinglarge amounts o soy, and to onlyeat three servings or less daily.

On Jan. 16, 2006, ScienceDaily published an articlereuting the claim about soyand breast cancer that stated theollowing.

Research in monkeyssuggests that the natural plantestrogen ound in soy doesnot increase markers o breastcancer risk in postmenopausal

women. In act, they may providea protective eect in some

    women.However, there has been

research on lab mice thatsuggests that isoavones in soycan produce cancer cells thatcause breast cancer. This debate

will continue in the years tocome.

There has also been concernthat eating a diet high in soycan cause thyroid problems.According to soynutrition.com,this is also a myth. As o now, there are no clinical studies thatprove that soy is harmul to thethyroid glands.

However, soy contains highlevels o phytic acid. This can bedangerous because high levelso phytic acid can reduce thebodys ability to absorb calcium,

magnesium, copper and zinc.Phytic acid can cause growthproblems in children.

It has also been suggested thatbabies who drink soy ormula candevelop health problems. Thephytoestrogens, which have beenlinked to causing thyroid cancer,in soy can make children developautoimmune thyroid disease ithey drink soy ormula.

    Drinking soy can also

increase the bodys requiremento vital nutrients such as vitaminB12 and vitamin D.

While soy remains acontroversial topic or scientistsand nutritionists across thecountry, the benefts o soycannot be denied. Soy canreduce the risk o cancer, helpreduce the severity o menopausalsymptoms, reduce the amount oblood cholesterol in the body andreduce the risk o heart disease.

More studies still need tobe done to determine the risksand benefts o a diet high insoy and soy protein. However, itmay be sae to say that i eatenin moderation, the benefts osoy may outweigh the risks.Moderation is the key. Clinica lstudies suggest that two to threeservings o soy a day are healthyor the average American.
