From the Desk of Fr. Mark

Hi from Pioneer Days, For those who read this column outside of Putnam County, the town of Kalida is having its festival this weekend. Conti-nental will follow suit in a couple of weeks with its own festi-val. These festivals give persons an opportunity to show town pride and gather with family who have moved away, in the midst of food, drink and games. When I first got here, I heard about, "Always the weekend after Labor Day." Pioneer Days is Ohio's oldest festival. The proceeds from the festival go for good causes, to help build a better community. St. Michael's helps make the festival festive with a number of booths. I frequent these tents throughout the four days. The CLC cake wheel does great business, as people try to win a dessert, after loading up on French Fries and elephant ears. For healthier food, I recommend the Holy Name "Social Burgers." The operation is slick; or is that the street surface after thousands have been cooked and served in the same lo-cation for years? I spend most of my time at the Bingo tent. Our staff decided years ago to do Bingo differently. Instead of making any money, we would make good will. We would supply a place to sit and visit and play a game. Young and old come to the tent to rest and talk with family, neighbor or even a school rival. We give all the money away so that it can be true charity. We stop between games for opportunities to visit and for me to harass people from other towns (I would never give anyone a hard time from Kalida or Continen-tal). There are oohs and aahs and cheering and hoping that children win (that even brings a smile to the most serious Bingo player). For the cost of 25 cents, a lot can happen. Since we give all the money away, we thought of renam-ing our "Bingo" tent to a word that still has five letters. With the gathering of tired people who need a place to rest, with the opportunity for strangers to become friends, with a chance to hope for a perfect stranger and all the time to build a stronger community and world in the name of God, I would change the name of the Bingo Tent to “Mercy” Tent. In this Year of Mercy, we reach out with God's love to everyone. The town festivals are great for food and fun and Pioneer does not disappoint. Our park and fire department are good examples of how the proceeds have helped build our town. It does take money to help build a community. But without mercy, what kind of community would it be? Be merci-ful. Visit with family, friends, neighbors and the stranger. Be merciful: visit all the church tents. Have a great weekend. Fr. Mark
