Horst’s Life

Horst was born on October 15, 1926 in Heidelberg, Germany. He was the son of Hanna and Fritz Weiss and brother to older sister Ilse. The family migrated to Melbourne in 1936 via England, where they had lived for a few years in Ipswich, Suffolk. The Second World War came and Fritz was interned and ultimately “swapped” back to Germany. Horst and Ilse grew up with Hanna managing the household and Fritz only present through wartime censored letter correspondence.

Horst met our mother Mavis (May) in Life Drawing class. As the story goes, their eyes met across the room, and the rest is history. Horst and May married in March 1953 in the Scotch College Chapel where Horst had been lucky enough to spend much of his schooling.

A long and fruitful life followed, producing five children over a marriage that spanned 62 years, until May’s passing in 2015. Horst remained very close to his sister Ilse and husband Kurt as they built their lives and family in Sale (Victoria), where Ilse lives to this day.

Horst retired in his mid-70’s from a career spanning many roles including some stints at entrepreneurial start-ups. He was never backward in giving life his best shot and his efforts both professionally and personally are a role model to his children.

Horst’s Children’s Remembrances

Our father was a man of many colours; emotionally, professionally and spiritually. Music was pivotal to Horst’s sense of self, and we all grew up aware of the intellectual and emotional role it played in his life. We hope you are beginning to feel some of Jupiter’s Jollity, now that you are freed from your earthly burdens.

After Horst passed away last week the old memories of him immediately started flooding back. I remembered walking very slowly in the bush with him while he pointed out the smallest details of plants and animals and their relationships. This love of nature informed his life and his art and subsequently mine, and he passed that onto all of us, I will always miss him.

Our dad was a very quiet person with wide interests and passions highlighted to us when we packed away his library some years ago which was always impressive highlighting the spread of his thinking. Philosophy, religion, science, poetry and classical literature of all kinds abounded. We treasure those mementoes.

He was a good man who thought more about others welfare than his personal material gains. He was a wholesome, connected and thoughtful man.

Thank you for the appreciation you have given us all for the world around us.

Horst, we love you.

Music

Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel written in 1978 reflects both Horsts’ love of 20th century classical music, and also works of lighter orchestration. The piano and violin provide repeated reflections of each other with small variations, reflected back and forth. He loved it; I hope it brought his memory closer for you.

Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones - The Sun Won’t Set written in 2013 as a moving tribute to their father’s (Ravi Shankar) everlasting influence on their lives. Anoushka and Norah are half-sisters from different musical universes, coming together to thank their father.

Gustav Holst - The Planets, Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity one of Horsts many big orchestral loves that he would conduct with a flourish, as he does today for all of us.
