High Energy & Vibratory Finishing
Centrifugal High Energy Finishing
Vibratory Finishing
Here at ActOn, we have an exclusive facility, equipped with state-of-the-
art finishing machinery, such as high energy and vibratory machines. All our
machines are manufactured at our site in Coventry, and along with our range of
consumables, we offer a complete package to achieve the required surface finish.
The high energy machines provide a speedy finishing solution, as well as a high
quality finish to the parts, eliminating any need for fixturing and preventing their
impingement. Our subcontract facility has a range of high energy systems made
with the latest in high energy technology. With a variety of applications, the high
energy machines can give you an aggressive cut-down; yet are precise enough
to give a mirror shine to most of your delicate components. Both wet and dry
processes can be carried out in these machines.
One of the main advantages of the high energy finishing is the reduced processing
times, with most applications taking between 10 to 30 minutes. Hence, ActOn can
provide a quick turnaround time for the finished components.
Along with the high energy machines, we also have vibratory finishing equipment,
which processes parts of variable sizes and batch quantities. Our range of
vibratory finishing machines available in our subcontract facility includes bowls,
troughs and dryers. These machines have been built to suit various customer
applications from deburring, descaling, radiusing and cleaning to polishing,
drying and surface improvement. The wide range of vibratory machines and
accessories enables us to process parts with different shapes and sizes.
Even though the process time required to finish components in the vibratory
finishing machines is longer in comparison with the process carried out in the high
energy finishing machines, we offer a competitive turnaround time and a cost
effective solution.

Precision Polishing & InspectionIn order to provide you with complete surface finishing solutions, we offer a
precision polishing service for components from various industry sectors. In
combination with our barrelling capability, you’ll benefit in terms of cost, delivery
and quality. Our applications include removal of manufacturing defects on medical
components, aerofoils, gun components, automotive parts and many more, which
are inherent in the casting and forging process.
To comply with the quality standards required by our customers, ActOn has
continuously invested in the development of the machinery and technology and
has implemented and followed a stringent quality control code. Nevertheless, a big
part of our success is due to our commitment to employing highly skilled staff and
continuously training them to the required standards.
Our trained inspectors ensure every component is inspected to the required
specification prior to delivery. The inspections can include visual, dimensional and
surface finish measurements. Our document controls ensure that all inspections
are recorded for traceability purposes.
The following are some examples of components we precision polish and inspect:
Aluminium forgings
Gun bodies
Aerospace blades
3D printed parts
Medical implants
Automotive pedals

Blasting and PeeningWhat is Shot blasting?
Shot blasting is a process used to prepare the component surface prior to coating or application of overlays. The method
includes directing at a high speed spherical blasting media, through compressed air, against the component surface
to clean, remove corrosion, mill scale, paint or rust, achieve a smooth finish, polish and strengthen (peening) the metal.
Blasting results can be manipulated by length of exposure to blasting, when in a tumbler, or adjustment of pressure,
nozzle size and nozzle distance when in a cabinet or shot blasting room.
The blasting media type, shape, size, density, and hardness, along with media acceleration and volume of media,
combined with blasting distance from the work piece, angle of impact and time cycles are important factors in the blast
process capabilities. Selecting the right abrasive media is essential and depends upon the condition of the material
before blasting and the finish required after blasting.
Shot blasting is widely used in different industries such as defence, aerospace, automotive, general engineering,
construction, rail and many more. The Shot blasting process can be applied on metals and softer materials such as
plastics and wood. The process can also provide decorative finishes.
Applications
Our facilities and what we can doWe offer a comprehensive blasting service from our Stourbridge facility to our customers in the Steel Manufacturing,
Food, Automotive, Defence, Marine, Health and Safety, Steel Profiling and Design Industries providing:
An automatic blasting service using large tumbler machines for commercial blasting, cleaning or surface profiling - a rubber belted machine is available for fine blasting
A room shot blasting service which caters for work of a much larger scale. Separate blast rooms located in different work units avoid any possibility of cross contamination of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
A hand cabinet section for small or large items or one offs that cannot be tumble blasted or that require selective face blasting
An aqua blasting service for fine blasting
A shot peening service

Type of blasting Abrasive Type Process Reasons
Automatic Blasting Various size ball shot and grit Rubber belted machines that tumble items in bulk whilst blasting
Cleaning of materials for industry. Removing coatings, paint or
powder coating. Caters for high volumes to J.I.T. requirements
Hand Cabinets Glass Bead Cabinets for blasting of individual items
Blasting of delicate items i.e. plastic grilles
Room Blasting (Non-Ferrous
Abrasives) Aluminium Oxide or Glass Bead Maximum room capacity of
7m x 3.25m x 2.5m
Achievement of a consistent and uniform finish on both stainless steel and aluminium products
Room Blasting (Ferrous Abrasives) Grit Media and Ball Shot Maximum room capacity of
7m x 3.25m x 2.5m
Elimination of paint, rust, foundry sand and mill scale. Leaves the
product with an ideal key for painting or powder coating
Shot Peening
A cold working process in which the surface is hit by shot, causing
small dimples, which act as a peening hammer
This increases resistance to fatigue failures, stress corrosion and galling. Specifically used in
the production of gears, chains, welded parts and the aerospace
industry
Extends the fatigue life of most metals, conforming to Almen strip
standards

Cleaning standardsNew coatings will not adhere on component’s surface if the surface has not been prepared properly, by removing the rust
or the mill scale. Rectifying the failure of coating can be expensive and time consuming, as it implies removing the coating,
prepare the surface finish, re-coating and in some cases the component might need to be dismantled and assembled.
Our service can achieve the desired Sa standards to ensure that the part’s surface is cleaned to the specification. This
ensures the metal is prepared for the coating stage avoiding any future failures.
Standard Blasting Method Finish Reasons
N/A N/A Initial stage prior to blasting.
Sa 1 Light blast cleaning
When inspected without magnification, component surface is free from poorly adhering mill scale, rust, old coating, foreign
matter, visible oil, grease and dirt.
Sa 2 Thorough blast cleaning
When inspected without magnification, most of the mill scale, rust, old coating, foreign matter, visible oil, grease and dirt are
removed. Residual contamination is very well adhered.
Sa 2 ½ Very thorough blast cleaning
When inspected without magnification, component surface is completely free from mill scale, rust, old coating, foreign matter,
visible oil, grease and dirt. Some traces of contamination are visible as slight stains in form of spots or stripes.
Sa 3 Blast cleaning to visual clean steel
When inspected without magnification, component surface is completely free from mill scale, rust, old coating, foreign matter,
visible oil, grease and dirt. Their metal is free from any spots, stripes or discoloration and the component surface has a
uniform white metal colour.

Waste Water Treatment
Each of our Bowls are simple to operate, highly efficient, and manufactured in classic designs and sizes to meet your unique applications.
Engineered with the latest technology, the drive mechanism is designed to produce high g-forces, resulting in shorter process times. This technology can be used for both wet and dry processes.
We offer Troughs in many different sizes and an infinite choice of length and width combinations, making them one of our most versatile. These are particularly useful for larger components.
During the finishing operation, the effluent can be
polluted with oil, media and metal fines. Our customers
trust us to help select a waste water treatment system
that complies with the industry’s growing regulations. Once
processed, the effluent is treated in the ActOn centrifuge
system before being discharged to the drain or recycled.
