WE PUBLISH LOCAL AND WORLD’S LATEST HAPPENINGS LEADING JAPANESE DAILY ON ISLAND OF HAWAII VOL. XXXV HILO, HAWAII, T. H., SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1941 NO. 9121 BRITAIN WILL DECLARE WAR ON COUNTRIES NO REPLY RECEIVED FROM THREE COUNTRIES IN AN- SWER TO NOTES LONDON, Dec. 6—An announ- cement made by Great Britain to- day said she is declaring war on Finland, Rumania and Hungary. No satisfactory replies have been received from the Finnish, Hunga- rian and Rumanian governments to notes addressed to them last week and communications are be- ing sent to these three govern- ments which will result in the ex- istence of a state of war, the Fo- reign Office said. It was not made clear in the statement whether the state of war is dated from the expiration of an ultimatum to the three coun- tries Friday midnight or whether it would go into effect when the new communications were sent to them, but it was made very clear that a declaration of war was in- evitable. BERLIN, Dec. 6—Reliable sour- ces reported yesterday that Fin- land, Bulgaria, Hungary and Ru- mania had rejected British ultima- tums allegedly demanding cessa- tion of operations against the So- viet Unioru Authoritative sources reported that all four countries have al- ready delivered their answers. However, this source failed to dis- close the contents of the replies to Britain but other sources said that the answers constitute a rejection. He added a deep pock- et inside Malita hay would permit four destrovers to hide unsuspect- ed during the day. COID WAVE SLOWS DOWN WAR IN USSR ha S ^ SMALL GAINS ARE CONTINU- OUSLY MADE BY NAZI FORCES BERLIN, Dec. 6— A powerful counter offensive on the Tihkvin front between Moscow and Lenin- grad was launched by the Red army, Nazi sjiokesman said yest- erday but fighting on both the Moscow and Rostov sectors has been slowed down by an intense cold wave. Previously reports were made that the Red armw had made new attacks on the southern front but the high command said they were broken. The reports further said that strong German plane formations were now attacking Russian troops and field fortifications on the southern front and also the Moscow front. Furthermore, the Nazi planes have inflicted heavy casualties and wreaked great de- struction on Russian materials. KUIBYSHEV, Dec. 6— German shock troops have been driven to the vicinity of the great Moscow reservoir near Dmitrov, 50 miles north of the capital, special re- ports from the front said yester- day. Tbey were halted by the Rus- sians just east of the reservoir. SCREEN RADIO NEWS and SONGS By GENYA KUBA HOUSE MEMBERS REJECTS YOUTHS ENROLLMENT AT WEST POINT WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 — De- claring they can’t place absolute trust on Thai’s Premier, three members of the House of Repre- sentatives temporarily blocked the resolution to permit 22 -year old Ananta Khittasangka to enter military school in West Point. When Andrew J. May, Kentucky Democrat, presented the resolu- tion, Clare Hoffman, Michigan publican, demanded assufaAcg’’"“if this, young man goes to West Point won’t he learn some vital military secrets and go home . amd ■ someone'." '^ ' Earl Michener, Michigan Repub- lican, and Robert Rich, Pennsyl- vania Republican also opposed the resolution and Sam Rayburn, speaker of the House, instructed A. J. May to withdraw the resolu- tion temporarily. Secretary of State Hull favored the resolution as a gesture of friendship to Thailand. Miss Chiyomi Furukawa, the luckiest of all local ama- teur singers, made her initial appearance at the Yamatoza theatre last night before a capacity crowd decorated with a beautiful orchid corsage and dressed in beautiful red kimono. Colorful bouquets of flowers sent by friends dressed up the stage. Miss Furukawa recently was forced to return here on the Taiyo Maru, last of the NYK liners that made her trip to Hawaii in Nov- ember, due to the tense U. S.-Jap- an relations cutting short her mu- sical training in Tokyo. Her trip to Japan was made possible as a grand prize for winning the 1939 territorial amateur s(ing contest held at the Park theatre and she received letters of introduction to such famous stage artist, Miss Ta- kiko Mizunoe, and Columbia sing- ei:, Fumiko Kawabata. A special recording test at the Columbia Re- cording Company was also part oi the award. In her personal appearance last night. Miss Furukawa sang three numbers, all of them considerec new here. Singing “Hana wa Ura- nai” as her initial number, shej displayed unusual ease in her me- lodious singing. The way she twists her voice to the smoothness of song, giving soft breaks to verify the differ- ent parts of verses is sweetly and marvelously done. Her enunciation is clear which shows a marked trait of any good singer. As her second munber, she sang “Chi wa Hate,” a popular song which was well-received by the entire audience, in spite of my favoring the first number. Lastly, she sang “Hawaii Nade- shiko,” the song that was written by Saijo Yaso and music composed by Hattori Ryoichi which she re- corded for commercial purposes. In case you aren’t familiar with Saijo Yaso—he is a poet who visit- ed the islands some years ago and the writer of the popular song, “Shina no Yoru.” He is also the famed writer of “Soshu Yakyoku”, which was simg by Keiran (Ri Koran) in the kohen of “Shina no Yoru.” Mr. Hattori was incident- ally composer of music of this song, “Ogya to umarete mango no ko kage”, that’s the way she started out and at the instant she started singing, her clear tone showed that she has tremendously improved compared to her amateurish sing- ing two years ago. She reached the highest pitch in her singing with unsual ease with- out craning her neck at all and simply letting the tones out. All in all, “Hawaii Nadeshiko” is a beautiful song and maybe it is Experiment Rats Shown at Paauhau Two white rats, one on a balan- ced diet, and the other on a poor diet, were shown by the home de- monstration agent at the Paauhau University Extension club meeting on December 3. The rats have been- on their diets for experimental purposes since October 8, In two months, a very marked difference can be no- ticed. The poor diet rat weighs 8 ounces, while the balanced diet rat weighs 12 1-4 ounces. “Howdy, Stranger” To Be Staged at Hi Skool “Howdy, Stranger,” has been selected as the senior class play to be presented the public early part of 1942, it was announced yes- terday at the Hilo High school. In the play, a Brooklynite goes to Wyoming when he is “found” by a New York showman. Cordell Hull Confers with President For One Hour in Reg’ard to Reply After Conference with Envoys WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 It was revealed that the Japa- nese envoys. Admiral Kichisabiiro Nomura and Sabiiro Ku- rusu, handed Tokyo’s reply to President Roosevelt’s queries to Secretary of State Hull during the eighth conference be- tween the Japanese envoys and State Secretary Hull held at 11 a. m. today. However, it was said that the State depart- ! ment still has not received the reply to Hull’s note of Novem- I ber 26. ! Disclosures was made by the State department follovdng ! the conference. It was added that any comment on the ans- Iwer to oRosevelt’s note would be made by the White House 1 after study of the contents. To reporters who beseiged them on the arrival to the State departm.ent the envoys hoped that the talks would be continued. Kurusu when asked if current reports that a number of Japanese troops in Indo-China were exaggerated replied, “Yes, I think so.”. The Japanese envoys were further questioned vdien they left Hull’s office but rigidly refused to comment and said no further meeting with Hull is scheduled. Queried if he thought the Japanese reply provided a bas- is for continuance of talks, Kurusu replied, “I don’t know.” Later, Cordell Hull cancelled his noontime press confer- ence and went to the White House where he discussed the Japanese reply with President Roosevelt for one hour re- maining in the White House in order to attend the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet. TOKYO, Dec. 6 — Vernacular evening editions without exception v/ere splashed with the Japanese- American crisis. In typical head- lines concerning White H o u s e ’s publication of the Japanese reply: Yomiuri quote “America Ignores Diplomatic Precedents and Bares Contents of Our Reply.” Niclii Ni- chi quote “America Decides to Stall Diplomatic Talks In Inter- est of War; Britain’s Iron Fist Lurks Behind Scenes.” Until recently the conservative Chugai quote “United States Ag- ain Demonstrates Its Insincerity as Conversations Enter New Pha- se.” The Kokumin blazed “Ameri- ca’s Breach of Faith Reaches Its Climax! Washington Adopts To Expose Tactics As It Sees Con- versations Nearing End.” Meanwhile the Yomiuri promi- nenced the Bangkok dispatch from its own correspondent titled “Thai- land Will Fight If It Can’t Re- main Neutral.” The report quoted “Premier Pi- bul Songgram asserting in the speech of December 5 that Thai- land has concluded no secret treat- ies with any foreign power, said the country will go to war when- ever it is impossible to preserve peace.” Dokuritsu School Bazaar Tomorrow All is in readiness for the Hilo Japanese Independent school spon- sored bazaar this Sunday from 10 a, rri. at the school located on Ulu- lani street. Axis Hurls Three Attacks on British CAIRO, Dec. 6—British general headquarters reported yesterday that Axis forces have hurled three powerful attacks at the British po- sitions at Ed Duda, south of To- bruk, gaining some ground in a new outbreak of Libyan fighting. According to a British com- mand, the first two heavy attacks by theGermans and the Italians on Ed Duda were fiercely countered with many casualties and the third attack gained a little ground most of which was subsequently recap- tured in a counterattack. In this battle, too, the enemy suffered se- rous casualties. There will be no “drive.” Mnny people think of the De- fense Savings Program as like the Liberty Loan campaigns o' the first World War, which were conducted for stated periods to raise specific quotas. The De- fense Savings Program is a long-range, continuing effort to stimulate the public to buy more and more Defense Bonds and Stamps month by month, and is essentially a program to pro- mote mass saving, as weil as to provide money for defense. Q, Are the Defense Savings Stamps sold at retail stores ex- changeable for Defense Savings Bonds, A. Yes. They are the sam© as Stamps on sale at post offices and elsewhere. NOTE: To by Defense Bonds an. Stamps, go to the nearest post ol fice, bank, or savings and loan a sociation; or write to the Treasui er of the United States, Washing- ton, D. C. Cordell Hull Confers with President For One Hour in Reg’ard to Reply After

Conference with Envoys

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 It was revealed that the Japanese envoys. Admiral Kichisabiiro Nomura and Sabiiro Ku- rusu, handed Tokyo’s reply to President Roosevelt’s queries to Secretary of State Hull during the eighth conference between the Japanese envoys and State Secretary Hull held at 11 a. m. today. However, it was said that the State depart-

! ment still has not received the reply to Hull’s note of Novem- I ber 26.! Disclosures was made by the State department follovdng ! the conference. It was added that any comment on the ans- I wer to oRosevelt’s note would be made by the White House 1 after study of the contents.

Queried if he thought the Japanese reply provided a basis for continuance of talks, Kurusu replied, “I don’t know.”

Later, Cordell Hull cancelled his noontime press conference and went to the White House where he discussed the Japanese reply with President Roosevelt for one hour remaining in the White House in order to attend the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet.

H O M E G A R D E NQUESTIONS and ANSWERS

The following questions and answers have been prepared to meet some of the most oommon inquiries of home gardeners who are attempting vegetable production in their yards.

This material is intended to supplement Agricultural Circular 95 “Home Garden Hints.”

1. What are some of the points to bear in mind in regard to location of a home garden?

Abundance of sunshine, good drainage, protection from strong winds, availability of water, convenience of operation and maintenance. Areas filled with many large tree roots should be avoided if possible.2. How important is it to have a windbreak?

' An adequate windbreak or protection from strong winds is absolutely necessary in a good home garden. Pigeon

‘ pease, sorghum or pole lima beans (King of the Garden) grown on a chicken wire fence are good. Vitex, panax or porary windbreaks can also be made from empty sacks crotons can also be used, but they are somewhat slow. Temporary windbreaks can also be made from empty sacks stretched between stakes.

3. How would you go about deciding what to plant.Be guided by (1) what the family likes, (2) and varieties that do well in your neighborhood. Don’t plant many vegetable varieties, even though the catalogue descriptions are intriguing. Limit the garden to a few types, not over eight or a dozen at the most. Total food value, natural resistance to disease or insect attack and general size of the garden will help determine what to grow.4. When is the best time of the year to plant a garden

at low elevations? In such areas as Honolulu, Hilo and other similarly located places the fall is perhaps the best time to start, but if one really wants a garden it can be started at any time.5. Some good varieties of the best adapted vegetables for

home garden purposes:String beans: pole—Kentucky Wonder (Brown Seeded,

Rust R esistant); bush Bountiful, PlentifulLima beans: pole_King of the Garden; bush_Fordhook

bushBeet: Detroit dark red or Crosby’s Egyptian Carrot: Danvers half long or ChantenayCabbage: Head—Golden acre; Chinese Wong BokLettuce: Mignonetteor Manoa Spinach: New Zealand, Chinese, true spinich Tomato: large—Break O’Day, (not advisable for sum

mer production at low elevations); Small_San Mar- zano

Onions: green bunching, self multiplying types.6. How often and in what quantities should vegetables

be planted in the home garden?

PARTNER IS DAUGHTER— W alter PIdgeon, star of stage and screen, chooses his daughter Edna for dancing partner, at the Stork C lub, New York. W h ile he's often before movie tenses, cameraman rarely catches him with his fam ily .

This question is discussed in detail in Agricultural Circular No. 118 “The Home Garden.” Estimates are given for requirements for a family of 5.

7. What vegetables should be avoided in a home garden in Hawaii?

a. Cucumber too extremely susceptible to disease andattack of melon flies.

b. Squash varieties same as above.c. Pumpkin same as above and also requires too muchroom for normal growth.d. Corn— long maturing, low total harvest per plant, re

quires much space and attention, same space and tim’e would givemore food units return if devoted to some other crops.

e. Artichokes not adapted to the tropics.f. Cauliflower—too hard a crop for most home garden

ers—better to plant broccoli or cabbage.g. Brussels sprouts not adapted to the tropics.h. Shelling peas not adapted to the tropics.i. Pepper—Very difficult for home gardeners to ade

quately cope with the insect and disease problems.j. Watermelon and cantaloupe too susceptible to disea

se and attack of melon flies.8. What commercial fertilizer should the home garderner

have on hand?A good commercial grade of complete fertilizer such as one containing 6 parts nitrogen, 9 parts phosphoric acid and 5 parts potash or 4 parts nitrogen, 12 parts phosphoric acid and 8 parts potash. (Commercially known as 6-9-5 or 4-12-8).

When Sam Papu’s Diamond Packers of Oahu defeated the oKloa Plutes of Kauai in an inter-island grid-

' iron game last weekend on Kauai by the scorei of 25-0, i the Honoluluans claimed the 130 pound barefoot foot

ball championship of the territory. They had previously beaten Kahului Jackrabbits of Maui in a game at the Honolulu Stadium.

This may be just a pipe dream, but it would be interesting, if and when, the highly tutored Diamond Packers of Honolulu meet Hilo’s champions. Wreckers, for the undisputed territorial championship.

A game such as this, held over a holiday like Christmas, in a town whore there’d be no other competitive event, like in Hilo, should draw a huge throng of spectators.

The Haiku football team of Maui, that was defeated by the local CIO aggreation on Thanksgiving Day, finished the Tegular schedule over on Maui in a tie for the championship .with the Jackrabbits of Kahului. CIO beat Haiku 14-0, while the championship Wreckers team hold two victories over CIO in the local circuit, which should give the Links a big edge over the Maui champions.

Unquestionably the Diamond Packers of Honolulu is a powerful team with veterans holding down every position in the lineup, and a game featuring Wreckers against such a colorful eleven should well be a natural, even more so with the territorial championship at stake.I « « « «

IT might be interesting to note that at least 10 fighters that did their fist slinging in the Big Island amateur rings last year are now doning the colors of the CYO amateur fight dub over in the Capital City.

All these fighters will likely appear on Tuesday night’s amateur card if opponents are available.

Former Hiloites fighting for CYO are as follow: JoePark, last year Hawaii featherweight runner-up; Tommy Mo- rita. Big Island flyweight king; Johnny Torres, former welterweight title holder and last year lightweight runner-up; Anki Hoshijo, Hilo Sugar bantamweight; Manuel Gonsalves, flyweight; Estebone Bibilone, flyweight runner-up; Fred Higa, bantamweight; Moses Higa, welter; Clifford Ahu, Naalehu bantam, and Albert Lui, Naalehu fly who is now fighting in the bantamweight division.

All these fighters mentioned above were the nucleus of the Simon pure boxing on the Big Island last year and they will undoubtedly play a big part in the Honolulu amateur rings. With several leading amateurs leaving the simon pure ranks to enter the money game, it vdll be these fighters that will carry on the amateur game in Honolulu.

With proper training, the right kind of competition and a few breaks, one or more of these fighters mentioned above may come up with a territory title.

Because of the injury list and the uncertainty of some fighters of making the weight at the weigh-in this afternoon, the BIAU boxing committee, headed by Chairman Toma Ta- saki, was unable to definitely state the number of fights on tonight’s card. However, fans are assured at least 9 to 12 slam bang bouts.
