On going Learning – whats this?

Within scouting there are elements of training that need

to be updated – Safeguarding, First Aid and Safety. It’s

easy to forget about this once you have done all your

training and got your Wood Badge. Did you know that

you need these to be in date when you need to apply or

renew a permit – such as nights away? For safeguarding

you can either do a face to face course which is run by

County or you can do it online? The face to face course

is a better option as you get to ask questions and net-

work with other leaders. Details of all the courses run by

county can be found on WY Scouts Events web page.

Did you also know that if you have done first aid at work

that this can count towards your Scouting First Aid –

send in a copy of the certificate and we will check and

update your records.

If you have done an on going learning then let us know

and we can update your record – actually this applies to

any training that you do for Scouting.

On leaving the Merchant Navy he continued with 1st Ilkley becoming Venture Scout Leader & also began a close association with Reva eventually taking on a Committee role & being awarded Honorary Life Membership in 1999. In 1988 he joined Otley Parish as ASL becoming SL when Mick Gledhill the Scout Leader moved on & became GSL on resignation of Richard Bleasdale in 2006. Burley News All sections within 1st Burley Scout Group continue to thrive.

Sept ‘18 marks the 60th anniversary of the registration of the Group so we’ve a com-memorative badge for all members to wear this year. We’re planning a Group Camp to mark the anniversary.

Beavers have enjoyed a sleepover with a fo-cus on bike safety and Jane Jones success-fully completed her nights away permit.

Watson Cubs had their annual pack holiday for the weekend of 8th June. Forster Cubs and the Explorers have enjoyed a weekend of climbing and abseiling on the Cow and Calf supported by WYS climbing team.

Scouts have been focusing on bike mainte-nance and planned a day of cycling on Sun-day 10th June where parents were encour-aged to join in.

Report from 2nd Otley Beaver Colonies Have a busy programme for the sum-mer term, planning a joint camp to Thornthwaite and an end of term walk on Ilkley Moor. Cub Packs Triumphant in recent Cub sporting events, winning the Swimming Tournament (Tuesday Cubs) and 5-a-side tournament (Thursday Cubs). Successful camp at Bradley Wood will soon be followed by an overnight cycle camp in York, taking in the Solar System cycle track and staying at Snowball Scout Campsite. Scouts Have an active programme with lots of outdoor activities, a camp is planned for July and numerous hikes/evening activities taken place on Otley Chevin The Group has been rocked by the unexpected deaths of two regular leaders - Peter Young (Scout Section and Group Exec) and Jon O'Neil (Thursday Cubs). They are both missed greatly by everyone in our Group. We're making plans to recognise their contributions to 2nd Otley and Scouting

Report from 3rd BR Beavers have done cycling, camp craft (put up tents, built a fire & toasted marshmallows) & explore badg-es - been to the woods den-building & making animal homes, done a scavenger hunt. Enjoyed a trip to Studfold farm. We’re doing the sport badge & have the funday/sleepover, bug hunt & water olympics to look forward to. Been pretty busy.

Cubs We currently have 23 cubs coming on a regular basis and have the capacity for a couple more. We now have a Section Assistant (Adam), a young leader (Eliott) and 2 Scout helpers (Ben and Sam). The Scouts are volunteering as part of their Duke of Edin-burgh bronze award. Activities have included a trip to the local Fire Station, Easter egg hunts in the ad-joining cemetery, a Burns Night with haggis tasting and a Winnie the Pooh celebration evening, a District Activity evening at Curly Hill and hopefully a season ending Nerf War.

Scouts have had a weekend away at Blakedean Hos-tel near Hebden Bridge. This was very eventful as we were snowed in and had to walk out to Hebden Bridge to be picked up. They’ve visited Ilkley Town Hall and took part in a debate about CCTV in Ilkley, been orienteering, practiced camping skills and had a volunteering day on Ilkley Moor

Report from Menston Negotiations are on-going with the Council over our land but seem to have ground almost to a halt which is frustrating. Both Scout Troops went to camp together at Bowley Gap and had a great time. Cubs are going separately, Cromwell to Nell Bank and Fairfax to Sconce.

Report from Addingham Beavers Have completed their cyclist badge and safety badge. They’ve done a pirate themed meeting and had a visit and demonstration by a beekeeper. They’ve also done some work on the gardens around hut Cubs Have been on a walk with an environmental group to see the oldest hedgerow in Addingham and have visited the allotments to plant some new saplings. They’ve completed lots of challenge badges and 5 cubs have complet-ed their Chief Scout Silver Award. The older Cubs have been doing their team leader challenge badge by running games and helping the new cubs. Scouts Have been climbing and abseiling on the Cow and Calf, visited the STAR Centre in Keighley to complete the Astronomer Badge. They’ve camped at Great Tower partaking in raft building, kayaking, bell-boating, cragg climb-ing, tomahawk throwing and various high ropes activities. A memorable event was “Scouts got talent” for the en-tertainer badge. They’ve made model planes with working engines to complete their model maker badge. Three scouts have also completed their Chief Scout Gold Award.

Report from District Beavers I am pleased to report that all colonies in the District are doing well. In February we held our second Chinese Capers at Ot-ley Bridge Church. It was good to see that we had a full turn out of the Districts Colonies. We are looking forward to our annual Funday and sleepover at Curly Hill on the 23rd-24th June. We are hoping that the weather is kinder to us this year after we had to cancel the Funday last year although went ahead with the Sleepover. I would like to thank the District Beaver Leaders who are always welcoming when I visit and their enthusiam and support whenever we hold events Pete Dickinson, ADC Beavers

Report from 1st BR Beavers Took part in 'Chinese Capers', visited a local Church, made pancakes & are currently working on cy-clist, camp craft and book reader badges. Chubb Cubs followed their usual summer programme where they meet outdoors most of the time. Activities included backwoods cooking, pond dipping, wide games and their annual boat building challenge. Findlay Cubs had a sleepover at the HQ, visited the County Gang show and were successful in the District Cubs football. Both Cub packs will visit Hag Dyke in June and are camping together at Walesby forest at the end of July. Scouts The new troop is well established and are plan-ning a mass investiture at Beamsley Beacon in July. Both troops (total membership now 57 scouts) follow a similar programme with the emphasis for the summer term on camping skills. Both were successful in the torch race. They intend to camp together with scouts from Otley Methodists at Carsington Water in Derby-shire at the beginning of August. Group Will supported the Ben Rhydding Fete in June with a range of marquees and other facilities and will run a barbecue stall and other stands (mostly for fun but a small amount of fund raising!)

Report from District Cubs The annual District Cub Leaders meeting was held 23 May and was attended by five of the fourteen packs in the District; 1st BR Findlay, 1st Burley Watson, Ilkley Christchurch, Menston Cromwell, Otley Methodists and Otley Parish. 3rd BR did send their apologies. All leaders were thanked for their hard work through-out the year. Particular thanks were given to Bev Roth-ery of Otley Parish, who is standing down as Cub Leader after 20 years. Bev will be missed but will be continuing to work in Scouting as GSL of Otley Parish. Following complaints from Leaders, Cubs and parents about “non Scouting” behaviour from some packs at District competitions, we’re speaking directly to the leaders and GSL of the Group concerned. In addition to the events we already run, leaders have expressed interest in a sleepover at “The Deep” and a possible Cricket competition/league. Interest in these events will be canvassed.

News of recent bereavements at 2nd Otley Jon’s funeral took place at Otley Parish Church & was attended by around 400 people. He was Head of Maths at Harrogate High School, a really likeable chap and a really dependable leader. He leaves his widow, Beth and two sons William and Matthew. Peter had been diagnosed with cancer shortly after Christmas. He had surgery to remove it in Febru-ary but the surgeon had only been able to remove part of the cancer. Peter was recovering at home and had been building his strength in preparation for chemotherapy. Unfortunately he became ill over the weekend of 14/15 April and died in hospi-tal on 19th April. Trevor Oates 2nd Otley Scout Group

Wharfedale Explorer Report The District Explorers in all four units are busy with outdoor activities, including camps, expeditions and wide games at the moment. 2 units took part in the annual Torch Race with Ilkley winning this year and Burley being the best turned out. Hopefully next year all four units will enter a team. July 2nd sees the District young people going to Reva for the evening to sail, kayak, raft build and row before the annual BBQ. Pam Newman, DESC

Reva Sailing Centre

Reva has been enjoying its “high season” for the past month with plenty of activities going on. Recent fundraising

has resulted in the purchase of some new equipment with a brand-new RS Quest training dinghy, purchased with

funding from the Freemasons of West Yorkshire and a brand-new red bellboat was purchased with funds from Ilkley

Round Table. Both boats were named and officially launched on Sunday 3rd June with guests and members invited.

Fund raising remains at the forefront of our activities to make on going purchases possible.

The May RYA Sailing Course ran with 11 participants with light winds and plenty of sunshine. Certificates for Level 1,

Level 2 and RYA Seamanship were awarded. The next course will be held in September.

WSSC/Reva is due its annual RYA inspection in October.

25 Water Activity Sessions and 3 Sailing Courses have been or will be safely completed by the end of September with

over 800 young people taking part. Instructors / Permit Holders and Members are working hard to make each ses-

sions successful. Keeping up with the training of instructors is paramount to keeping the centre running.

We are encouraged to see more groups from Wharfedale District taking part and some are becoming interested in

becoming Group Members and making the use of the centre on a regular self-help basis. You can find out more

about what is on offer at Reva on the website.

Annual Torch Race

Scouts from across Wharfedale competed on the 11th May in the Annual Torch Race up Otley

Chevin. Traditionally all Sections are inspected in uniform with 1st BR Scouts being declared the

smartest with Burley Explorers.

1st BR fielded 2 mixed teams beat off the completion to win the coveted Torch. The winning

group will now get to keep the torch for one year. Ilkley Explorers won the Explorers competi-

tion.

The Torch Race was first held in 1935 as part of the celebrations of the Silver Jubilee of King

George V and Queen Mary. It was carried on that occasion by the Scouts of Otley from the Jubi-

lee Clock in Otley to the summit of the Chevin. it was then used to light the Beacon on the Sur-

prise View, which was one of a chain throughout Britain to celebrate the Jubilee. After the 1935

celebrations, the torch was presented to the Scouts of Otley, and in May each subsequent year,

the Scouts have arranged to hold a relay from the town centre to a flagpole placed on the site of

the original beacon.

The DC presented the trophies & said “...how wonderful it was to see so many teams and the

dedication of all the leaders to ensure this event goes from strength to strength…”

St Georges Day Parade

Wharfedale District Scouts Paraded from The Riverside Gardens in

Ilkley to Ilkley Parish Church with over 500 scouts from across the

District taking part, the Church was filled to capacity. Addingham

Group organised the Service with a play about the story of St

George involving lots of their young people. Maz Jennings

helped to read the Story. The Vicar, the Rev Jill Perrett men-

tioned words which are important to Scouts & their beliefs /

teachings i.e. God, Faith, Peace, Friends & Truth. Each year the

Scout Law & Promise is repeated & confirms our commitment to

the principals of Scouting.

Ilkley Air Cadets very kindly headed the parade with their small

Band & a bag piper from Addingham also helped.

We would like to extend our thanks to all the Commissioners, Executive Members, Leaders and

Supporters for all they do to support and

develop Scouting in the District, one of

the largest at nearly 1000 members. As

we all know, it's the combination of the

talent and commitment ofall our Scouting

family that makes Scouting here in

Wharfedale what it is today and we are

rightly proud of our achievements. What-

ever part we played, we did it together.

We hope to experience more success in

the Scouting year ahead.

Otley Methodists were awarded the an-

nual Trophy for the Smartest Group on
