We Love, Laugh, and Learn Together
Dear Haun Husky Families,
At this time of year, I pause to give special thanks for my many blessings. My
family, my friends and the times spent with them building memories that last a
lifetime are some of my greatest gifts. Certainly another of my greatest
appreciations stems from the privilege I have at Haun to work with each of you and
your children. As a Haun staff, we so appreciate this community, our caring
parents and the most wonderful children. Thank you for the giving you all so
graciously provide for our school, and the joys you bring to the children and staff
by pulling together to make success possible for all.
This is meant to be the most “joyful” time of the year. Deadlines and commitments
sometimes give us the feeling that everything has to be “wrapped” up! During this
special time of year, we hope each family has time together making memories with
those you love. The moments you spend will be what is remembered for years to
come by your children. Take time to stop, enjoy one another and reflect on past
memories. Read together, celebrate one another, sit and enjoy to music together,
and delight in a cup of hot chocolate together. Take time to “be in the moment
with one another”.
My wish for you is that you and those you love will celebrate this season of
thankfulness with a spirit of humbleness, gratitude and appreciation. Thank you
for joining our efforts to make Haun the best place it can be for our children to
learn and teachers to teach.
I am one blessed educator,
Jayne Smith

Sugary drinks and the rise of metabolic syndrome
<image001.jpg>
Are sugary drinks to blame for the rise of metabolic syndrome in children? It’s common knowledge to not let your children snack on candy all day, but many parents forget to consider that the most common culprit of hidden sugar is those sugary drinks.
Despite our best efforts, childhood obesity rates continue to rise due to lack of physical activity and poor nutrition. Obesity usually brings on a host of corresponding health-related problems, such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The onset of these two conditions among children has increased significantly over the last two decades and sugar-loaded drinks such as sodas, sports drinks and fruit-flavored beverages* may be largely to blame.
The Risks of Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome among children is a global health concern that will likely persist into adulthood if neglected. Specifically, metabolic syndrome is the presence of a cluster of risk factors, such as:
insulin resistance (body’s inability to regulate blood sugar) high blood pressure obesity low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (also known as the “good” cholesterol) increased triglycerides (free fatty acids in the blood).
The presence of metabolic syndrome greatly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease. While genetics may be partially to blame, often times the problem stems from environmental and lifestyle factors.
The Impact of Sugary Drinks and Fitness
<image001.jpg>
We Love, Laugh, and Learn Together
In a study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), researchers examined lifestyle factors such as the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and physical activity levels to see how it affected the risk of metabolic syndrome in adolescents.
The results showed that increased intake of sugary drinks clearly had a negative impact, including:
↑ increased insulin resistance (indicating that the body is having trouble regulating blood sugar) ↑ increased systolic blood pressure (top number of the blood pressure reading) ↑ increased waist circumference ↑ increased body mass index (BMI) ↓ reduced “good” HDL cholesterol
Alternatively, higher levels of physical activity clearly lead to overall improvements, such as:
↓ increased insulin resistance ↓ increased LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, aka “bad” cholesterol) ↓ reduced triglycerides (free fatty acids in the blood) ↑ increased “good” HDL cholesterol
The positive benefits were even more profound when high physical activity levels were combined with a reduced intake of sugar-sweetened drinks. The findings clearly indicate that to prevent metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents, we must increase their physical activity levels while reducing their sugar consumption.
What Can We Do?
The study is just another stone in the pillar of truth about childhood obesity. If we want our children to be healthy, we have to make sure they get enough physical activity and follow a healthy diet. Children and adolescents should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. We must also limit their intake of sugar-loaded drinks while making sure they get enough water to stay hydrated. Helping kids get active and get healthy is the key to reducing metabolic syndrome so they can live Well. Into the Future.
*100% fruit juice is not considered a sugar-sweetened beverage because it does not contain added sugar and is recognized by the American Dietary Guidelines and the American Academy of Pediatrics as a healthy alternative source of fruit. However, servings should be limited to 4 to 6 ounces per day for young children and 8 to 12 ounces per day for children 7 and up.

Haun PTA International Night
Booths Thursday, February 20th 6:00pm-8:00pm
International Night is a fun and educational event. The student “travellers” should get a
sense of geography and the diversity of cultures by visiting the special “Country Booths”

4. Remember that your booth does not need to have a comprehensive history and culture.
Children do well with limited but well-chosen, eye-catching objects and facts. A thematic focus
may be more memorable and easier for children to digest, e.g., sports and games, a day in the
life of a typical child (morning, night, meals, school, religion, etc.).
5. Food & drink samples are popular but not mandatory. If you provide food samples make sure
they are store-bought, with allergens noted (e.g., nuts, wheat, dairy, etc.) and the ingredient list
is available if anyone requests it. Some stores may be willing to donate items as well. *You can
present our Haun tax-exempt certificate when approaching businesses for donations. Please
let us know if you would like to go this route.
6. If you are passing out any item (food, craft, beverage, etc.) please plan for 350-400 students.
Booth Budget: This depends on how many different countries sign up. We can reimburse up to $30-
$40 a table. This includes food samples, decorating materials, craft or writing supplies, etc. **We will
only accept original receipts (no photocopies).
Please contact us with any questions at [email protected].
