The assignment• Define the underlined literary term and

then follow the activity directions to give an example of the literary term.

• 1.) Using your shoulder partner create PowerPoint slides and define each of these terms on a slide. You will need to create at least 2 slides per term – one with the definition and one with the activity.

• 2.) Underline the term and number them.

• 3.) EACH OF YOU will turn upload your slides to Schoology by the end of class for a participation grade.

• Extended Metaphor – Example: See Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem “Sympathy” – Activity: Describe your personality using an extended metaphor

• Onomatopoeia – Example: The bacon sizzled in the pan. – Activity: Write two sentences that use Onomatopoeia.

• Personification– Example: When I sat down, the chair wrapped its arms around me comfortingly. – Activity: Describe your house using personification.

• Rhyme– Example: Now I lay me down to sleep. / I pray the Lord my soul to keep. – Activity: Write a 3 line rhyme about your favorite restaurant.

• Repetition– Example: Martin Luther King’s speech “I Have a Dream” – Activity: Use repetition to sell your favorite soft drink.

• Simile– Example: Float like a butterfly sting like a bee. – Activity: Use a simile to describe one of your parents.

Alliteration• the commencement of two or more words of a word group with the same letter• Aunt Pig likes pink and purple purses!

Allusion • An expression

designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.

• West Jefferson is the city of death, because of the new principal the kids think the principal will kill them of all the rules.

In the poem, The City of Walls by Edgar Allan Poe, the phrase "up Babylon - like walls" is considered to be an allusion as it refers to the doomed city of death.

• language that contains or uses figures of speech, especially metaphors.

• My English class talk so much, I really thought they all had motor mouths.

• My English teacher gives so much work my head was spinning from all the new information.
