Changing to Sundays 8-9 p.m.

As followers of Jesus we are called to offer our lives to God. Few of us will be called to be a martyr in the literal sense. We are

however called to take seriously the summons to loosen our grip on the things of this world in order to grasp more fully the

realities of eternity. We are called to sacrifice! Nothing is more important to most of us than time. Will you make a sacrifice of

one hour of your time to spend with Jesus? . Jesus wants to spend time with you

especially Thursdays from 3-4 p.m or 8-9 p.m.

And on Sundays, join us for Exposition & Adoration with Benediction & Vespers from 7-8 p.m. (Changing to 8-9 p.m. starting Sunday, August 8). Come and spend an hour with the Lord to end your weekend and start your week.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 08 August 2021 1 Kings 19:4-8. Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9. Ephesians 4:30–5:2.

John 6:41-51. “Stop Murmuring.” Elijah is running for his life from King Ahab and Jezebel because he told the truth. He was fed by an angel of the LORD for his forty-day flight. This story is context for the third Sunday-in-a-row conversation between Jesus and the crowd on bread of life. Perhaps, with a sigh, Jesus says: “Stop murmuring.” Though what I say may be hard to believe, it is true, it is real. I Am living bread. Eat me and live forever.

♦ What do I believe concerning what looks like bread is more than bread?

♦ How does eating this living bread affect my life? ♦ After sharing in Communion, how can I affect the lives

of others?

THE 14 DAY CANDLE will be burning in memory of Mary Catherine Bugnitz

“A HEARTH CAKE AND A JUG OF WATER” Since last year, following the spirituality of St. Elizabeth our patron saint of the parish, I have been trying to familiarize myself with baking, and learn how to bake. I think if I was to have a bakery all my bakes: pastries, cakes, and bread would bare the hash tag “Bread of the Angels”. It is like when Angels bake, it does come with the heavenly sweetness, that when you taste it, and you see the good goodness of the Lord. And not only that, but it also provides nourishment for the journey. See in the first reading this weekend, we have Elijah who was not only frightened and dispirited, but also exhausted and hungry, and the journey ahead was still long. In his misery, as he lay himself under a broom tree, despondent, he slept off. Then a quiet touch from God’s angel awakened the man of God. The angel whispered, “get up and eat.” And, lo and behold, “there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water.” (1 Kings 19:6). This reminded me of Abraham’s visitors who appeared to Abraham by the oak of Mamre, as he sat in the entrance of his tent, while the day was growing hot. When he saw the three men standing near, he hurried into the tent and told Sarah: “Quick, three measures of bran flour! Knead it and make hearth bread.” (Gen 18:6) A cake baked on a hearth, and jug of water, from the angel nourished Elijah and “then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb”. What was this “Hearth Cake”? This must have been a basic familiar flat normal bread from the middle east. It did not even need an oven to make it, and it needed not leaven. It was accessible to anyone, a quick, portable everyday bread. “He looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. After he ate and drank, he lay down again, but the angel of the LORD came back a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat or the journey will be too much for you!” Like Elijah sometimes we need the hearth cake. As God sent help to Elijah in the form of an angel, at every sacrifice of Holy Mass, He sends to us his only begotten son, who says to us: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (John 6:51) May the “living bread that came down from heaven” strengthen us always to go out and bring Jesus to others, especially those we meet in our daily lives. As Pope Francis said: “May we become a Church with pitcher in hand, a Church that reawakens thirst and brings water.” Together with Christ’s Mission Father Alfred Tumwesigye

“Know this my daughter: If you strive for perfection, you will sanctify many souls; and if you do not strive for sanctity, by the same token, many souls will remain imperfect. Know that their perfection will depend on your perfection, and the greater part of the responsibility for these souls will fall on you.” (Diary, 1165)

This weekend, almost two handfuls of parishioners are away on

retreat at the beautiful Villa Maria Retreat Center, our diocesan center on Lake Springfield. The retreat is a new concept that we’re testing for the diocese, focused on developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Mass & the Eucharist. I’m grateful that the Holy Spirit saw fit to plant the retreat this weekend when we’re in the midst of Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse from John 6, which focuses us on the reality of the Eucharist, and has also called so many of our parishioners to try this retreat experience.

I’m hopeful that upon our return, one or two of the retreatants might be inspirted to offer a “book club” over a few weeks, based on one of the texts that our retreat team has studied in our 10-week preparation period, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, by Brant Pitre. Watch for it – the book is available from our parish Faith Formation library if you’d like to borrow a copy. It is a beautiful dive into some of the realities of the Eucharist that many don’t know or understand, and it’s a fairly accessible read.

We’re grateful also for Seminarian Ryan’s wonderful presentation this past Thursday evening in our Learning in the Library series specifically on The Eucharist. Jesus in the Eucharist is the most amazing and wonderful thing available to us on this side of the veil of heaven, and it something that I don’t think we can ever learn or hear too much about. Every time someone speaks on the Eucharist, I know I’m going to learn or experience something new. Such is the depth of the wonderful reality that is the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus’ true presence here with us on the altar and in all of our Catholic churches.

Now is the time of year to please prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to guide new people to our church. RCIA will start soon. If you know of someone who may be interested in learning more without committing to RCIA, invite them to come with you to our series “Discover Christ” on the 5 Thursdays of September. You can come one of those Thursdays or any combination of them that you’re available. This is a great way to tiptoe into some of the basics of our faith – and for those of us who still want to learn, re-learn, or learn more deeply to enter into it in a new way.

Domine non nissi Te… Lord, nothing if not you. Yours in Christ the Servant, Deacon Michael Halbrook

If you have been faithfully praying every day, thank you! If you are just hearing about this, we invite you to jump on board. PRAY BIG! INCENSE FYI – Through the entirety of the history of Judeo-Christian worship, the use of incense has played a key role in fostering prayer and lifting our hearts and minds to heaven. “The use of incense adds a sense of solemnity and mystery to the Mass. The visual imagery of the smoke and the smell remind us of the transcendence of the Mass which links heaven with earth, and helps us to enter into the presence of God.” Further, Holy Mother Church encourages the Sunday celebration of the Mass to be marked with a special and heightened degree of solemnity (our highest form of worship). In accord with Pope Francis’ recent Apostolic Letter & accompanying letter to all bishops, encouraging full and proper celebration of the liturgy, and aligned with other enhancements we are starting to make in our worship as we conclude our 150th year as a parish: Beginning Sunday, August 15, we plan to use incense at most 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses on an ongoing basis.

SUNDAY HOLY HOUR WITH VESPERS & BENEDICTION – TIME CHANGE – Starting THIS Sunday, August 8, we’re going to move our Sunday Holy Hour with Adoration, Vespers, and Benediction from 7-8 p.m. to 8-9 p.m. Please join us! We’ll also change to praying Compline (Night Prayer) instead of Vespers. Wrap up your weekend with Adoration, Sunday Compline, and a Eucharistic Blessing on Sundays from 8-9 p.m. Bring the family!

SATURDAY MORNING ROSARY – Join parishioners from St. Elizabeth & nearby parishes for the praying of the Holy Rosary for an end to abortion outside the abortion facility in downtown Granite City from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday mornings.

HELP WANTED- The Coalition for Life St. Louis is looking for those pro-life individuals who are interested in sidewalk counseling as their job! These are paid positions starting at $11 an hour and between 15-30 hours a week. Please visit their website: coalitionforlifestl.com/jobs

PRAYER FOR PREGNANT MOTHERS O Blessed Mother, you received the good news of the incarnation of Christ, your Son, with faith and trust. Grant your protection to all pregnant mothers facing difficulties. Guide us as we strive to make our parish communities places of welcome and assistance for mothers in need. Help us become instruments of God's love and compassion. Mary, Mother of the Church, graciously help us build a culture of life and a civilization of love, together with all people of good will, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. Amen.

Hello all, Father and Deacon Michael invited me to begin writing a

bulletin article every couple of weeks to stay connected to the parish while I am at Seminary during the coming academic year. Since I am wrapping up my time here at St. Elizabeth, I thought this Sunday would be the perfect time to begin. I hope that this article will be an interesting, informative, and fun way for me to share some of the theology that I learn at the seminary as well as some of the history of the Church.

I know that at first the word Theology can seem intimidating or lofty, but I can promise you that (although it has beautiful depth) it is not something to be intimidated by (after all I can understand it well enough).

To begin let’s look at the word Theology” and consider what Catholic Theology is used for. The word (like many Catholic words) has its origin in two Greek words: “Theos” and “Logia”. “Theos” refers to God/divinity, and “Logia” refers to study/science. So, the word “Theology” is the study of God, otherwise called the science of God.

When we talk about Theological Study as Catholics, we mean two things:

1) The study of God through the Natural World. 2) The study of God though Revelation (which comes from

God). The first one is what we call Natural Theology and the

second is known as Sacred Theology. By using both of these we come to greater knowledge of who God is and what He desires for us. This is why the Catholic Church has always called Theology the “Queen of the Sciences,” because it uses what we can know through both our natural reasoning (Natural Theology) as well as what we know by God’s assistance (Sacred Theology) in order to find the desire of our hearts (as St. Augustine puts it) which is God.

As a final note, I want to thank everyone for the welcome I have received here at St. Elizabeth. I am excited that when I return to seminary, I can remain in contact with you all through this column. God bless and know of my prayers for you all! -Ryan
