Why a grant programme?

The first, pilot edition of the grant programme in 2012 aroused great interest among Capgemini employees in Poland and was definitely a success. Projects in 2012 responded to the needs of diverse social groups and were characterised by a high level of involvement among employees – many of them resulted in permanent changes in local communities. The potential that was seen in the projects of the pilot edition was also noticed in the next edition, in 2013, when 15 projects were able to count on financial support from the company.

Most project assumptions remained the same. The programme is an answer to many bottom-up initiatives from the company's employees, who regularly draw attention to important social problems in their surroundings. It consists in the involvement of the company's employees in volunteer activities dealing with social issues important to them and their community. At the same time, the company provides financial, substantive, and organisational support to the employees who submit the best social projects.

Thanks to this, everyone can become personally involved in pro-social activities.

Beneficiaries of the programme include the local community, broadly understood (e.g. preschools, children's homes, seniors clubs, animal shelters). Projects submitted to the programme should:• solve important social problems,• aim to increase civic participation,• strengthen community organisations in Poland,• build civic participation among both the beneficiaries and the implementers of the projects themselves.

Additional points are awarded for the involvement of people under the care of the Gniazdo Foundation and the SIEMACHA Association in implementation of the project (N.B. This is about involving people under the care of the above-mentioned organisations in helping others) and, since the second edition, for so-called skill-based volunteering, i.e. sharing one's skills, knowledge, and competencies. It is not possible to transfer a grant directly to the account of a chosen community organisation or a person in need.

A programme participant can be any employee of Capgemini regardless of their position, department, or type of employment contract. It should be noted that only teams can apply to participate in the programme; individual applications are not accepted. A project team is composed of at least three Capgemini employees. One may (and it is even advisable) invite people from outside the company to participate in the project: family, friends, and acquaintances from other companies or community organisations. Each team is led by a team leader who must be an employee of Capgemini. The team leader is responsible for proper implementation of the project (in substantive and financial terms).

The selection of projects is carried out by the Programme Committee, which comprises individuals of public trust, CSR experts, social activists, researchers, representatives of Capgemini. The assessment criteria are known to the participants in advance.

Basic documentsmandatory in the case of all project applicants:• Programme Regulations,• Participants’ Vademecum – step-by-step guide,• Application – online,• Declaration of participation in the programme.

The programme is an element of the CSR (corporate social responsibility) strategy.

Projects implemented under the programme reflect seven core values of the company:• honesty,• courage,• trust,• freedom,• team spirit,• modesty,• fun.

What are the features of the leaders and participants of projects implemented under the Capgemini Grant Programme?"We invest in good ideas"?

• Responsibility• Openness to other people, new ideas and ways of acting• Trust• Interest in the world and optimism

In 2013, the employees of Capgemini had the opportunity to participate in the second edition of the grant programme "We invest in good ideas”. People who noticed a problem in their immediate surroundings wanted to solve it and found people willing to help could apply for a grant in an amount up to 2 000 PLN. In total, 127 employee volunteers from Capgemini participated in 15 implemented initiatives, which is more than twice as many people as compared to the first edition, in which 58 employees got involved in nine projects. Employees from different departments and in different positions worked together to jointly achieve the aim they set when planning the project. They conducted their activities in groups composed of several people, sometimes also in larger teams, even up to 23 people. Employees could invite their families, friends and acquaintances to take part in their projects, and they willingly accepted such invitations, and thus an additional 128 people got involved in these activities. Moreover, significant support for those implementing the projects was provided by 47 volunteers from the Gniazdo Foundation and the SIEMACHA Association, our partner organisations. The 2nd edition of the programme "We invest in good ideas” ended with success: in total, 302 volunteers got involved.

The grant programme "We invest in good ideas" started, as in the case of the 1st edition, in February and lasted until December 2013. During the first two weeks of the programme, employees could submit applications online. After six weeks of the call for projects, organisers had received 27 applications, which assumed the involvement of 186 employees. Finally, the Committee selected 15 winning projects that envisaged support for children, young people, seniors, and animals.

We invest in good ideas

15 projects were subsidised for a total amount of 29 780.53 PLN

Actions that uniteThe distinguishing mark of the programme "We invest in good ideas" is without doubt the great creativity of the employees and the diversity of the activities conducted. Many projects involved activities for several groups of recipients. As a result, various age groups had the opportunity to play and work together, as well as to share experiences. Young people prepared a performance for children, seniors and children cooked dishes from various countries together, adults renovated rooms and shared their knowledge with young people. While implementing the projects, employees strived to react flexibly to different situations and therefore the activities were well matched to the expectations of the recipients. Thus, the projects were more effective. Volunteers from Capgemini proved to be very successful in the role of organisers: they organised fundraising events, looked for partners and organised a lot of other activities. Together, they found 43 partners representing community organisations, companies, media sponsors. Established partnerships are also an investment in the future.

Volunteering has many faces – something good for everyoneThere is no doubt that the projects implemented under the programme "We invest in good ideas" promote the concept of volunteering. At the same time, however, they represent great examples of various types of volunteering. In the implemented projects, it is easy to find examples of family volunteering, where family members or groups of friends work together, e.g. taking care of green areas at a playground together. Meetings for the blind and partially sighted, where a specialist shares knowledge of the basics of banking, are a perfect example of skill-based volunteering. Organising, as part of the projects, the collection of toys, books for children, and dog food is an example of event volunteering, which is something that any interested person may take part in. Whereas employees who took pictures of animals at an animal shelter and then posted the pictures on social networking sites and encouraged others to adopt pets may be called e-volunteers.

Investment in a good futureDuring the eight months of the implementation of the projects under the programme "We invest in good ideas", 4 015 recipients benefited from the actions and commitment of Capgemini volunteers. These included indirect beneficiaries who participated in football matches or made up the audience at staged performances. In this group, 1 049 were direct project recipients, those who benefited from the conducted activities in an exceptional way, who participated several times in proposed activities. There were 421 children and young people who participated in art, music, and cooking workshops, took part in performances or were able to enjoy the new playground. In addition, a large group of seniors – 230 of them – benefited from activities conducted by employees. Moreover, project teams took care of 28 pets.

It is worth emphasising that the projects implemented by employees created lasting effects in the form of renovated rooms, programmes for workshops for children, scripts for performances or the preparation of a workbook for people with Alzheimer's Disease. As a result, the number of beneficiaries of the activities will continue to grow, and the ideas that we invested in are likely to continue to grow as well.

As the team leader, I think that the initiative undertaken was an excellent opportunity to integrate with disabled people and to show how to contribute towards a change for the better with restricted financial resources but with unrestricted resources of collective involvement.

Marta Klimek Leader

I was positively surprised by the atmosphere in the corporation and the attitude of the employees – such cordiality, no rigidity, they were nice, friendly, full of enthusiasm, energy and, what is most important, very cheerful, with a sense of humour. It's great that this company is opening up to disabled people and is preparing job positions for them.

Seeing a blind person with a cane or a guide dog may not be uncommon for us. However, we often do not know how people with a visual impairment function at home, how they use bank services or computers, whether they go to the cinema or what chances they have on the job market, if any. The aim of the project "Tag! We play to help!” was not only to provide additional equipment for the only dormitory at the Special School and Educational Centre for the Blind and Partially Sighted Children in Lesser Poland but also to support the self-reliance, resourcefulness and education of its students.

First of all, the group of 17 volunteers from Capgemini conducted renovation, assembly and clean-up activities in the dormitory. Using money from the grant, they purchased relevant home appliances and kitchen equipment and also organised very effective collections of other home appliances (e.g. blenders, toasters), which were delivered to the centre. This assistance was complemented by Christmas gifts and cinema tickets for screenings tailored to the needs of visually impaired students. Secondly, as part of the project, there were educational workshops for young people from the dormitory related to looking for a job and preparing for a job interview, combined with a visit for students to the Capgemini office in Krakow, as well as educational workshops for students from the centre focusing on the basics of banking.

Participation in this project strengthened the awareness of employees of the issue of visual disabilities and gave them an opportunity to create better conditions for the children from the dormitory to learn how to function independently in their renovated cooking and utility room. The project also helped young people understand the meaning of image strategy and self-presentation during job interviews, as well as basic concepts related to entrepreneurship (e.g. their first visit to a bank, e-banking).

During the tournament, we played one match with the adults, and then we played with the kids, which was much nicer, as it was not about the result but about good fun. There were a lot of attractions for the kids, as well as games that they could participate in, such as exploring a fire engine, a shootout contest etc.

By getting involved in the Cap Football Cup, we not only marked our presence in local awareness, but we also found out a lot about organising outdoor events, our children could do something for others, and the Gniazdo Sports Club received new uniforms!

The atmosphere on the RAPID football pitch in Katowice was hot, even hotter than that really hot September day. The football tournament created an opportunity for a meeting not only of several generations but also of people from different communities. Guests invited to the picnic included children from the Gniazdo Foundation (an organisation we have already been supporting for a couple of years), along with their parents and relatives, Capgemini employees and their families, students from the University of the Third Age in Katowice, representatives of the authorities of the city of Katowice as well as residents of the Koszutka District.

The aims of the project were achieved, i.e. integration between Capgemini employees and the Foundation, promotion of sport and a healthy lifestyle among the event participants, development of the ability to work in a group, expansion of interests, promotion of the principles of fair play in life and sport, as well as an attractive way to spend one’s free time, forgetting family problems, preventing social exclusion.

Neighbours from the Koszutka District had the opportunity to get to know the children from the Gniazdo Foundation and to get to like one another. Organisers of the project established contacts with a lot of people interested in the project who were willing to cooperate. The organisation of, and participation in, the event brought a lot of joy not only to the youngest children from the Gniazdo Foundation but also to Capgemini employees and volunteers from the University of the Third Age.

Meeting new people, joy and pride in their work and the opportunity to share it with others, group cooperation and the involvement of parents allowed everyone involved to forget, at least for a moment, about illness and diverted attention from the hardships connected with a long-term stay in hospital.

The third workshop took place on Saturday and involved making felt brooches and earrings, necklaces and bracelets from beads. Children and caregivers enjoyed it so much that the workshop ended after almost 5 hours and only because the children had to rest.

The common room for children staying in the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre in Katowice-Ligota is the only place offering entertainment and personal development to children who sometimes spend many months in hospital. A Capgemini employee and volunteer at the "Mam Marzenie” Foundation gathered a group of people with the necessary knowledge and experience to support the common room staff in conducting activities for children.

These activities, conducted by volunteers after work, proved to be so interesting for children and caregivers that they were also conducted during the day outside of volunteer visits and for many weeks after the end of the project. Such workshops included making jewellery (e.g. brooches), greeting cards, painting plaster casts, decorating mugs, creating games, etc.

The workshops not only gave children the opportunity to gain new skills but also distracted them from everyday worries. The hospital world is very difficult and dreary for children – workshop organisation also required an awareness of the children's health-related constraints and adjustment of activities to days when children had to stay in bed. Frequently, the children who participated in activities were continuously connected to medical devices.

This final meeting was a surprise for me, as I did not expect such high level of attendance. The nursing home prepared the conference in a very professional way, and the presentations by elderly people were very positive and added to the appeal of the entire concept. One day, we will all be old. In Poland, however, it is still a kind of taboo subject.

In the beginning, those initiating the project wanted to turn their attention to people with Alzheimer's Disease and their families. The main symptom of Alzheimer's Disease is memory loss. Increasing difficulty in remembering leads to a loss of interest in one’s surroundings, an impaired sense of time and place, communication difficulties, and problems performing even simple tasks. Exercises to improve one’s memory and other cognitive functions are one of the basic forms of treatment.

In addition to a team of specialists and professional centres, it is important that family be involved in treatment. Sufferers spend most of their time at home. Therefore, it is so important to promote an active lifestyle. Apart from getting them involved in daily activities at home, memory training is important, especially in the initial and moderate phases of the disease. There is a huge demand for exercises that sufferers may do at home.

With the aim of facilitating care for families and directing them in how to properly involve the sick person, the members of the project team prepared and published an individual workbook that can be used at home by those suffering from the disease. Additional support was also provided to carers, and the nursing home at ul. Praska in Krakow organised a miniconference called "How to take care of memory".

Working on the performance "The Butterfly dEffect” was pure pleasure. Dealing with issues so much related to the life of teenagers taught me a great lesson.I am convinced that they will never concern me directly, thanks to a lot of discussions while creating the performance.(...) I am very proud of what we created.

Dancer participating in the project

It was a special evening for me. You were great! It was just an explosion of emotions – you gave more from yourself and your expression than the contents of the play itself. I have not seen such involvement for a long time.It worked! I must admit that I was really moved several times.

The project "We are there for one another" included both workshops and a theatrical performance. The aim of the initiative was to support young people and make them, as well as their parents, aware of the importance of communication in the family and mutual respect, in particular in relation to an adolescent. The initiative integrated adults and young people. It had a therapeutic aspect: a part of the project involved talks and workshops helping young artists to open up and allowing them to express what is usually difficult for them to talk about with their parents. Trying to find oneself in a world so much focused on image often leads to disorders such as bulimia and anorexia, which are today among the most serious problems faced by teenagers.

Theatrical and dance workshops, poetry evenings for young people, sessions with a psychologist, watching materials about drugs and anorexia, reading a book about problems facing young people, encouraging creative activities and discussions with parents – the result of these activities was a theatrical performance called "dEfekt motyla" ("The Butterfly dEffect"). The subject of the play were the difficult relationships that young people have with their parents and the surrounding world, where young people often feel lost and left on their own. The play was staged at the Cultural Centre in Brzesko.

The place, like probably every shelter, is sad. Most of the dogs were mongrels; however, there were also a few pure-breed dogs. Almost every dog has its own story, which the employees told us willingly. There were a lot of dogs that were abandoned by their owners. Unfortunately, there were even dogs that, despite adoption, returned to the shelter after some time.

Worked at Capgemini for 2.5 years. For the longest time in the position of a Personnel Administration and Employee Posting Specialist (Warsaw). In her personal life, she is an incurable optimist, animal lover and owner of a black Shar Pei cutie. She left Capgemini in 2013.

The aim of the project was to help dogs from the Guardian Angel Animal Shelter Foundation located in Falenica near Warsaw. The dogs were in need not only of walks, care and food, but of a home most of all. An idea emerged to organise a professional photo session and to publish the photos on social networks and in newspapers.

The project initiators wanted to present the residents of the shelter as neat, friendly animals. They organised walks and games with the dogs, during which they took photos. Additionally, they acquired wholesome food for the shelter and arranged for the kennels an adjacent grove, where the dogs are walked, to be cleaned. Despite initial fears regarding the depressing atmosphere at the shelter, this initiative provided a lot of joy for all the participants. It turned out that it is not sorrow that dominates the shelter but bustle and the happy wagging of tails. Each dog was happy about the time devoted to it and guided volunteers in the recesses of the nearby forest.

Pictures of the dogs are available on websites devoted to adoption and in local advertising services. The shelter is always looking for new homes for dogs and also for volunteers who would like to devote their time to walk the dogs.

From my perspective, the involvement of small children in such an initiative teaches them to share their toys with others (in need), teaches them to do good deeds selflessly and makes children more sensitive to the needs of others.

Anna Pernakleader

I am happy that such a great project was implemented on our ward. The TV set is used every day, cartoons are watched by young and older children, sometimes even with their parents. Children are very willing to play in the common room: boys usually choose blocks and puzzles, girls draw. Books are often lent to rooms and read to children there.

Has worked at Capgemini for eight years. Currently in the position of a Lean Expert (BPO, Krakow). She likes good tea, chocolate and walks in the forest. She would like to have a beautiful garden with a gazebo for reading.

On a Friday afternoon in June, it turned out that it was not so easy to pack into a car a rack for toys, 500 toys, boxes with toys, art materials and two children... that is, everything collected for the project (maybe except for the children ;-). And some of the items needed to equip the common room at the hospital were already waiting for volunteers on-site (including the TV set purchased from the grant).

All these items were collected during three events accompanying the project: at the Capgemini office, at the Piotruś Pan Preschool and the Combined Vocational Schools No 1 in Dębica. Finally, a group of volunteers under the supervision of Ania Pernak, watchful children using the common room and the keeper restored the common room, which is used monthly by about 35 young patients from the paediatric ward at the hospital in Dębica. Nurses also benefited from the project, as they got acquainted with the Kaizen Blitz method, as a result of which they introduced a few small upgrades in the nurses’ station and kitchen on the ward.

Would you like to visit a candy factory? It turned out that this was not so easy, even if the visitors were children and young people. As part of the Master Chef Junior project, however, even this worked out.

First, there was cooking, under the guidance of a special guest, Anna Starmach, a juror on the TV programme Master Chef. The children divided themselves into three groups and, together with volunteers from Capgemini, prepared dishes for the competition. Using the opportunity, they developed their culinary skills, learned how to use recipes and observed the skills of older assistants. After cooking together, the project initiators organised a trip to a candy factory where the little guests could make their own lollipop in any chosen shape. Employees from the Capgemini office in Krakow had an opportunity to learn about the manual skills of the children from the orphanage in Sieborowice. At a pre-Christmas bazaar in the hall of the RPB building, the orphanage displayed items that had been made by the children but not as part of the project: decorations, candles, Christmas-tree ornaments with sequins.

The project was the result of cooperation between the DEX BPO Team and the orphanage that had been initiated two years previously. And this will certainly not be the last joint initiative.

We will start from the end. This initiative ended with an extraordinary meeting that involved a dance performance and lesson for seniors. Project participants recalled events from the preceding weeks and already started planning new ones.

And everything started with a group of Capgemini employees who, encouraged by their leader, wanted to bring diversity and joy to the life of residents of the Helcel nursing home in Krakow. They used the grant to arrange a trip to visit monuments in Krakow (the previous trip from the social care home had been organised a year earlier), artistic workshops, a cook-out and thealready-mentioned music and dance meeting.

The cook-out gathered a lot people, and the residents of the nursing home also brought sausages for those who could not come due to health problems – they took care of one another without forgetting about those who were not present at the meeting. Meeting participants were very friendly towards volunteers and came to the meetings with smiles on their faces even if they were not able to fully participate in them.

Invaluable help was provided by the employees of the nursing home who showed a great deal of commitment in helping coordinate the use of the grant and coming on Saturdays to devote their free time. Cooperation was extended beyond the grant and is still going on now.

The aim of the project was to help furnish the playground for children from Preschool Unit No 39 in Krakow, including in particular the modernisation of a sandbox and planting greenery on the playground. This simple initiative brought a lot of positive changes.

Soon after the announcement of the results of the grant competition in May, a strong group of volunteers from Capgemini started to renovate the sandbox. Their works convinced parents to collect additional money and expand the scale of the renovation. They managed to develop the area around the sandbox and repaint the equipment located on the playground. Such works have always been the lowest priorities considering the needs of the preschool.

The project enabled the preparation of an area for play even before vacation season, and it infected teachers and parents with positive energy.

Staging the play at the hospital helped the children from the Foundation understand that there are great health problems in the world and that some children, often terminally ill, depend on the mercy and involvement of other people. Confronting this world helped fight children's demanding attitude, which their teachers and volunteers have to deal with on a daily basis.

Magdalena Kozłowskaleader

Stress accompanied us before every performance, but, despite this, the programme brought a lot of smiles, joy and fun to the Foundation. As a result of this, we were able to conduct our beloved sociotherapy, with passion, for several months. For us and the children, Capgemini has become a friend who we wait for all year long, no matter if there are any gifts or not. The attention that you give to children is invaluable.

In the beginning, each young actor – a child from the Gniazdo Foundation – received a script of "Peter Pan" directed by Jerzy Jan Połoński, adjusted to the skill level of schoolchildren. The same play was performed a couple of years earlier by a group of actors from Capgemini as part of the traditional Project Theatre. Supervisors from the Foundation got fully involved in the preparation of the performance and acted as screenwriters, directors, costume supervisors and prompters all in one. The kids created the sets on their own, painting fabulous pictures on canvas. The costumes were chosen by Capgemini employees, who, by the sweat of their brow, assessing the size and interests of the children, selected the materials and accessories.

With such involvement, it was possible to prepare and stage performances shown a couple of times later at the Foundation (for parents and friends of the Foundation) and at the Maternal and Children’s Health Centre in Katowice-Ligota. When performing the play at the hospital, children saw another world and the needs of sick children. The event strengthened the ties between the participants, strengthened the motivation of children from the Foundation to take on challenges. The play will certainly be performed by the very young actors many more times.

Already in May, members of the Ekipa Preventive-Care Club in Katowice initiated a series of meetings and workshops. The members of the club include children and young people from the Katowice-Szopienice District from dysfunctional families, often convinced that, due to their difficult life situation, they have nothing to offer, that they are worse, doomed to "grey everyday life in Szopienice". The project initiators wanted to show that they could find a more interesting way to spend their time and that helping others is always possible and very empowering.

The project started with a meeting at the Hippotherapy Centre, where everyone took part in a horse ride and a series of games centred around group work and the values that should guide us in everyday life.Young people from Ekipa also created the slogan of the campaign and collection – "Don't be a fool, giving to animals is cool" – which was later conducted in as many as six schools and at Capgemini’s Atrium office in Katowice.

As a result of the collection, as much as 130 kg of dry dog food was collected, along with blankets, bowls and other products that were given to the shelter for stray animals in Mysłowice. As part of the next meeting, Capgemini volunteers, along with members of Ekipa, built kennels for dogs from materials purchased as part of the project and then gave them to the shelter. Such help was welcomed by the shelter director, who was very moved and grateful.

What is interesting is that all the kids declared that they liked listening to music a lot, they had their own favourite musicians and a specific musical taste. Such a passive interest in music translated not only into a sense of rhythm, an ability to repeat a single exercise. All the children, regardless of age, had problems with concentration. For the teacher, teaching music was equally important as managing the group.

Michał Cupiałleader

I really enjoyed playing together. Not everyone was OK with it, as you had to listen and pay attention. But when something finally worked for a moment and you could hear that we were playing together, this was a great feeling. "In our educational system, music education is usually kept to a minimum, and the lack of funds necessary for the purchase of instruments prevents development in this direction of children from poor families," this is how Michał, the project leader, started his grant application.

For all the children participating in the project, the aim of which was not only music education but also to show them an alternative way to spend their free time and an attempt to find a passion, this was their first contact with real instruments. They had never had an opportunity to try their hand at music. Thanks to the use of relatively simple instruments that do not require long and arduous practice, the participants could quickly notice their progress.

At the same time, the nature of the activities required cooperation in a group and development of the ability to listen to others. Workshops were an interesting alternative to computer and television, another way to spend time after school. Meetings were usually held twice a week, and their culmination was a Christmas meeting and musical show presented by the beneficiaries. Instruments purchased with the grant will remain in the room.

In Poland, every hour someone hears the diagnosis blood cancer, or leukaemia. This means about 10 000 people a year. Every second patient qualified for a bone-marrow transplant from unrelated donors does not find a donor. The more potential donors, the greater the chances for people with leukaemia and other diseases of the haematopoietic system.

The aim of this project was to raise social awareness regarding forms of assistance to sick people by registering in the database of potential bone-marrow donors. The entire campaign was organised in Krakow and ended with an information and registration meeting conducted by Capgemini volunteers trained by the DKMS Foundation. About 250 potential donors were registered in the international database of the DKMS Foundation. The project also included informational workshops for people under the care of the SIEMACHA Association.

You can register in the database online, where you can also find a video illustrating the process from registration up to the moment of becoming a donor.

The probability of finding a suitable donor is from 1:20 000 and up to 1: several million.

Where does tzatziki come from and how do you make it? How do you make sushi and what are spring rolls? What dish would you consider to be typically Slavic? Members of the Gniazdo Foundation in Katowice were given answers to these and many other questions. The project united four groups – seniors from the University of the Third Age, children under the care of the Gniazdo Foundation, Capgemini employees and volunteers – around joint cooking and getting to know the flavours and cultures from the four corners of the world.

During the American Day, the play rooms at the Gniazdo Foundation were transformed into the most famous places in the US. Disneyland invited kids to colour and draw their favourite cartoon characters, and volunteers had the opportunity to visit Las Vegas. One of attractions was the possibility to ride a waveboard and to get a taste of "Florida’s climate”. During the Mediterranean Day, an exploration of regional cuisine was accompanied by a contest about contemporary knowledge of the countries of the Mediterranean region. During the day entitled "Battle of the Caucasus, or Asian vs Slavic cuisine", the young participants were able to find out how to prepare sushi and whether they liked how it tasted.

Implementation of the project "4 tastes of the world" resulted in a lot of benefits for everybody. Children from the Foundation were happy about the opportunity to develop their interests and gain new knowledge and experience. Joint cooking and preparation of dishes was not only an opportunity to establish contact between generations but also to discover that even the most mundane task can provide a lot of joy if it is done with heart and enthusiasm.

39

We invest in good ideas

Volunteering is changing its face, as people and their needs change in the turbulent times of the 21st century. Inherent impulses to help other people, outside the circle of one's own family, are increasingly often for an increasing number of people a part of the reality of two overlapping worlds: the professional and the personal. And although this division is thought of or treated by a lot of people almost as something sacred and the ability to clearly separate work from private life is for some people a source of pride and a symbol of internal balance, nevertheless increasingly frequently we can observe conscious decisions, as a result of which professional realities in unchanged form penetrate into the rhythm of the day and one’s private life among a growing group of people. Nowadays, a fundamental problem regarding the perception of volunteering in a wider and deeper way is the language of duty and obligation that dominates in communication about volunteering, often with the omission of language about advantages and benefits.

Today, this dimension of advantages and benefits is the most important reservoir of involvement in activities for others – actions that do not have the character of a one-off spurt. Therefore, a growing number of companies and corporations are providing their employees with new opportunities to get involved in volunteer activities. Employee volunteering, apart from many advantages and benefits for the company, the employee and their surroundings (community), which are impossible to summarise here, also fulfils another important function: "the positive power of participation", which is a source of joy and meaning for the volunteers/employees themselves. Analysing the activities of Capgemini volunteers, I had the impression that, before my very eyes, they were implementing the Motivation 3.0 project.

Daniel H. Pink, in his book "DRIVE: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us", lists three basic components of Motivation 3.0. They include: 1) Autonomy – responsibility in a personal dimension, consisting more in interdependence than independence; 2) Mastery – as a way of thinking based on the principle of asymptote and the desire to become better in something that has a real meaning for a given person; and 3) Purpose – achievement of a proper purpose (personal and corporate) and striving to fulfil tasks that, in our opinion, would be greater, more important and more permanent than we ourselves. The axis of many theories of the psychology of motivation is some particular human tendency: we react rapidly to positive and negative stimuli (stick or carrot) or to quick "calculators" enumerating our own benefits.

The dimensions, quality and particular benefits of the positive power of participation from activities conducted as part of employee volunteering on their professional behaviour and the specific competencies of a given employee require more detailed research and descriptions. However, already today the experience of many managers indicates that employees' participation in interesting, personally planned volunteer activities not only has a positive impact on their motivation and quality of work but also brings new quality into the life of teams and the entire organisation.

Often in psychological concepts and managerial practice, the aspect of play and creative imagination is emphasised as the key aspect for building involvement, cooperation and integration of teams. Certainly, play may be understood differently, and it looks different in offers frequently proposed to employees, such as incentive travel or team-building activities. It seems that elements of play and specific tasks fulfilled as part of employee volunteering are a better combination of motivating factors, building long-term passion and referring to deeper layers of the personality of the involved employee. Ad hoc motivational activities and projects are less frequently and to a lesser degree than a well-organised volunteer project able to satisfy, at the same time, three basic and inherent psychological needs, which are: the need for competence, autonomy and the need for a connection with others. Psychology Professor Richard M. Ryan from Rochester University and Prof. Edward L. Deci, explaining, in the Self-Determination Theory, the psychological mechanisms of Motivation 3.0 maintain that satisfying these needs makes motivates us , and makes us productive and happy. Imagination and creativity – these terms often properly characterise many employee volunteer activities. Surely, imagination and creativity are elements of the grant programme for Capgemini employees "We invest in good ideas". Legible regulations, clear rules for the selection of projects, respect for the autonomy of the authors of submitted proposals and many other aspects reflecting respect and esteem for employees' imagination increase my appreciation and admiration. Not to mention the organisational imagination of Capgemini decision-makers, who, apart from accepting and subsidising projects, show their readiness to build and support employees' ideas.
