Prelude - Toccata in F Major, BWV 540 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Christian Welcome and Announcements Tracey DanielPlease pass the Friendship Register to your neighbor and include all requested information.
Call to Worship adapted from Psalm 46 and 45 One: From where does our help come? All: God is our refuge and strength. Help for every kind of trouble. One: Take heart! Be still and know that the Lord is God. All: The God of salvation has promised grace, mercy, hope, and deliverance. One: The whole earth sings with joy - joy to the God of our past and our future. Let us worship with the hopes of our hearts and lives.
*Hymn 624 - I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art TOULON
*Call to Confession
*Prayer of Confession Our errors are too many to number. Our regrets are too abundant to remember. We have turned our ears away from the call to righteousness. Hear our confession, God of mercy. For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, extend your grace to us and renew us for lives of service and celebration. Help us to live like we have good news to share and a gospel to proclaim. In the name of the Trinity, we pray. Amen.
*Assurance of Pardon
*Passing of the PeaceOne: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. All: And also with you.
WORSHIP | EMBRACE | SERVE in the manner of Christ
Today is Reformation Sunday. We remember the ancestors of our way of Christian faith and we thank God for their contributions to our witness.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental Toccata in F Major begins with a two-part canon in the hands over a pedal point. This texture quickly evolves to a three-part imitative texture, including an involved pedal part. If you listen carefully, you may even hear Bach’s own name – B-A-C-H – inscribed into the music.
Long attributed to John Calvin, our opening hymn has been sung by Presbyterians and Reformed Christians with joy for hundreds of years.
Our Presbyterian ancestors often recited the Decalogue, that is the Ten Commandments of Moses (found in Exodus 20), each week in worship as a reminder of the law of God and their need of mercy when they did not live into its fullness.
*Response Hymn 394 - stanza 4 WESTMINSTER ABBEYLaud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son,laud and honor to the Spirit, ever three and ever one:one in might and one in glory while unending ages run!
WE PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Anthem - A Mighty Fortress Is Our God arr. Kyle Pederson (pub. 2019)A Mighty Fortress is our God, a refuge never failing. Our helper He amid the flood of mortal winds prevailing. For still our spirit’s foes doth seek to work us woe; They lure with pow’r so great, with judgment and with hate; Shield us e’er, guard us as Thy own. If we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing. Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing. You ask who this may be? Christ Jesus it is He. Emmanuel His name, from age to age the same; Who was, Who is, Who e’er shall be. Thy Word above all earthly pow’r; Thy Love above all earthly pow’r; Thy Hope above all earthly pow’r; My God above all earthly pow’r. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill, God’s truth abideth still. The Kingdom is forever. (Martin Luther, adapted by Kyle Pederson)

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Press Millen (9:30, 11:00)Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Presentation of Tithes and Offerings
Offertory - Una Limosna por el Amor de Dios (an Alm for the Love of God) Agustin Barrios Mangore (1885-1944)
Ed Stephenson, guitar
In composer Kyle Pederson’s words, “This arrangement of A Mighty Fortress Is Our God is a re-imagining of Martin Luther’s iconic melody. New harmonies and ambient electric guitar accompaniment create an ancient/modern feel… to this classic hymn.”
Our Presbyterian ancestors sung ONLY Psalms for many, many years. We sing Psalm 65 today as a way of remembering their witness and their worship. This setting of Psalm 65 comes from Psalms for All Seasons, a psalter with multiple musical settings of the psalms in different styles.
Translated from the Latin: “the church reformed is always reforming.” As Christians in the Reformed Tradition, our calling is to continually look to God to improve and advance the mission of the church.
*All who are able may stand.
Offertory Hymn 265 – stanza 5 DUKE STREETLet every creature rise and bringhonors peculiar to our King;angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud Amen!
*Affirmation of Faith from the Presbyterian Church USA Study Catechism All: What is God’s purpose for our lives? One: God wills that we should live by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, for the love of God, and in the communion of the Holy Spirit. All: How do we live for the love of God? One: We love because God first loved us. God loves us in Christ with a love that never ends. We entrust ourselves to God’s care: giving thanks each day for the wonderful goodness of God. Amazed by grace, we no longer live for ourselves. We live for the Lord who died and rose again, triumphant over death. Therefore, we take those around us to heart, especially those in need, knowing that Christ died for them no less than for us.
WE GO IN GOD’S NAME
*Hymn 275 - A Mighty Fortress Is Our God EIN’ FESTE BURG
*Charge and Benediction
*Chiming of the Trinity The worship service ends with the Chiming of the Trinity.
Please be mindful of those who remain to listen to the postlude.

Generosity Campaign 2020 UpdateAs of Wednesday, October 23, we have received 537 pledges totaling $2,612,332.75. If you have not already, please consider making a pledge at www.whitememorial.org/generosity.
Our affirmation of faith comes from 1998. It is from a study catechism. Presbyterians have always been committed to education in all its forms. Catechisms are study tools by which the core principles of our faith are explained and taught.
This hymn, based on Psalm 46, was written by Martin Luther. Part of his reformation was found in getting the people to sing their faith as the body of Christ. The tune name is taken from the German: Ein’feste burg ist unser Gott which is translated, “a mighty fortress is our God.”
Beginning Sunday, November 3 our first worship service will be at8:00 a.m. (instead of 8:15 a.m.) All other worship times remain the same.
