HISTORY

Willoughby Engineering is the continuing collaboration of a premier team of building engineering and high-performance design specialists who pool an array of high end design talents and technical expertise to be an industry leader in thinking, designing, and delivering high-performance solutions.

The group initially worked together at one of the world’s top integrated AE firms, where they engaged in some of the most prominent buildings and masterplanning projects around the globe. With these experiences under their belt, the team migrated to one of the largest engineering firms in the world, where they quickly became the lead global building systems and sustainability team for the Fortune 500 company and ENR Top 5 Design Firm.

The desire to pair their unique high-end design expertise and technical capability with a more personal level of service and client-focused approach led the group to brand WE, where they continue to help architects fulfill their visions on projects around the world utilizing their unique mix of creative approach, engineering ingenuity, superior customer service and technical engineering capabilities.

MISSION Willoughby Engineering has tasked itself with creating a new paradigm of quality when it comes to building engineering and high-performance design. The firm’s progressive approach utilizes an integrated design palette, including MEP/FP, sustainability, building physics, and masterplan engineering, that is brought to bear as early as the conceptual stage of projects, so that it can inform the architectural vision through an ethos of high-performance. By challenging conventional wisdom and the ideas of traditionally siloed architecture and engineering design, Willoughby Engineering blurs the line between these two disciplines, working collaboratively with architects and design teams to best produce truly integrated and high-performance buildings.

WE | WILLOUGHBY ENGINEERING Chicago | Dallas

Willoughby Engineering is breaking old paradigms in building systems engineering and high-performance design services.

The firm’s progressive approach utilizes an integrated design process, including MEP/FP, sustainability, building physics, and masterplan engineering, informing architectural visions through an ethos of high-performance.

This is what makes WE different!!

• Real interest in informing architectural design from a performance perspective. We are often called on to participate in design efforts when the architectural design is still just anidea.

• We define High Performance and Sustainable design as its own discipline. We have people in-house whose only focus is the incorporation of these principles. We often arehired specifically for these scopes as a standalone service.

• You get the ‘A-Team’ dedicated to your project. As a benefit of our size we are able to assign our most senior leadership to work on your project.Additionally the team has worked together as a cohesive unit for over 5 years.

• 100+ Years of Combined Global Experience with the exuberance, creativity andnimbleness of a young firm.Breaking the mold of the standard MEP firm we have something to prove and our approach tobuilding design and engineering is perfectly suited to projects which also seek to raise the bar.

• We recognize the power and value of an integrated design approach. With roots stemming from working at an integrated A/E firm we understand the benefits of workingcollaboratively alongside the service providers outside our specialty. We currently have the benefitof working in the same office as Halvorson and Partners Structural Engineers and often seek toassemble complete building engineering teams for projects in this manner.

OUR DESIGN PROCESS

Collection of Meteorological Data and Climate Analysis: Existing, digital, meteorological time series of hourly wind, temperature, humidity, and solar radiation over a typical meteorological year or season, representative of the site is collected and analyzed to inform appropriate high performance measures.

There are several ways to optimize comfort and energy use in buildings spaces. Some of them are passive strategies which do not require energy to operate. Computer simulation is performed and the predicted environmental conditions of the site are established, then improvement strategies are proposed and evaluated.

Where traditional MEP design aspects are brought into the discussion. Develop strategies to enhance energy performance of lighting, equipment, mechanical and conditioning systems. Suggest and design strategies that will provide comfort to the building users but at the same time use the least amount of energy to operate.

Dollar by dollar, building energy use reduction strategies are more efficient for reducing the carbon emissions during the lifetime operation of a facility. But when feasible, we will propose and engineer renewable energy generation options for the building that are fully integrated with other systems.
