When Rod Evans founded Upside in 1989, he ventured to create a firm that would truly listen to clients and follow through by meeting their requirements. He wanted to create a culture with a family-like environment that was challenging, fun, and respectful. engineering Our in-house talent includes all disciplines required for the successful engineering design of oil and gas projects. We have specialists in the areas of process simulations, rotating equipment, fire suppression systems, stress analysis, PLC programming in addition to our pool of talented engineers.
Design/Drafting Upside’s full-service team encompasses a balanced mix of experience for efficient execution of our 3D modelled designs. Including piping, civil/structural and electrical, our cohesive team approach to the design process permits stakeholder buy-in well ahead of labour-intensive drawing generation activities.
supply Chain management We are committed to working with reliable, high-performing suppliers and contractors. We efficiently execute logistic processes from bid through award to delivery and invoice approval, ensuring materials, equipment and labour align to meet cost and schedule deadlines.
Construction Support Our Construction Support (CS) team brings a wealth of knowledge and support to projects from the design process through to support during construction. By integrating our CS team throughout each phase of a project, we ensure our designs are efficient and cost effective through early construction reviews and planning. Once construction commences, our CS team supports our clients through to commissioning to ensure timely action to field requests.

project Controls In the world of project management, project controls tracks the financial health of projects. The project controls team plays a lead role in creating project budgets and schedules. They provide ongoing review of project progress and cost during the execution phase.
document Control Our team manages all project documents, ensuring we meet or exceed our clients’ expectations regarding document distribution while providing traceability and a high level of security.
implemeNtatioNmethodsAt Upside, we have three different implementation methods: major projects, sustaining capital, and non-major projects. These methodologies reflect how projects are executed.

Major projects generally relate to large capital projects. A project will normally be designated as a major project if it has an expected total installed cost of greater than $100 million or engineering costs to the end of detailed design greater than $5 million. Upside uses our Major Project Guideline, which provides guidance to ensure that major projects are executed in a consistent manner. This method of execution is the most important factor in major project success.
The Non-Major Projects Guideline captures projects between sustaining capital and major projects. Under this methodology, we encourage the client to use a customized execution plan which will meet requirements while at the same time satisfy Upside’s need to maintain quality standards.

Sustaining capital, which generally encompasses ongoing maintenance projects or small capital projects, is another implementation method. Sustaining capital projects typically have tight engineering timelines. Our guideline has five categories of sustaining capital projects and, depending on which category the project falls into, different deliverables will be produced. This allows us to provide our clients with an optimal execution strategy.

CoNVeNtioNalfaCilitiesConventional Facilities includes a wide variety of projects such as battery design and expansion, gas plant design, liquids fractionation, LACT units and pipeline connections, truck and rail loading/unloading, and facility piping and pipelines.
traNsportatioNfaCilitiesUpside has completed engineering design for some of the largest and most complicated tank terminals in Canada. These designs have included the interconnects, metering, valve manifolds and pumps within the terminal. We also have extensive experience in pipeline and pump station design for large diameter pipeline transportation systems.

Sustaining Capital projects at Upside involve executing programs of smaller scale projects using a simplified and efficient project implementation system. These projects are typically carried out with fewer procedures and controls than larger projects, but still meet the standards of our Quality Management System. This methodology is an excellent fit for an array of small projects in large facilities or programs of repetitive projects that are small to medium size.
Thermal/Heavy Oil projects include all above ground aspects of heavy oil production. We have completed numerous projects within heavy oil battery facilities, including designs for new batteries and modifications to existing facilities. Our expertise includes debottlenecking and optimization projects within operating thermal facilities.
