Confederation July 1st 1867

Canada’s first 4 provinces: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia

In Ontario people celebrated Confederation Day with concerts, parades, and fireworks.

In Nova Scotia , New Brunswick, and Quebec

people mourned, draped black flags, and feared their future in an English-dominated nation.

What problems were they hoping to solve by joining together?

What problems still exist and are present today between these two groups?

Quebec inside a Nation

To ease tensions between the English speaking people of Ontario and the French speaking people of Quebec.

Quebec still feared being a minority

Also worried about the school system

Quebec would still have rights to govern itself as a province

Where was the Red River Rebellion?

Who led the Rebellion?

Why was there a Rebellion?

Both official languages French and English

The Red River Rebellion led by Riel wanted to force the Canadian government to give the settlement provincial status.

During the Rebellion an Ontario man Thomas Scott was executed by Riel’s forces.

Louis Riel was forced to flee to the United States

When he returned to Canada Louis Riel was tried for treason.

John A. Macdonald announced that he would be hanged.

Canada was once again divided between the French and English

Since 1871 Aboriginal People in Western Canada had been forced onto reserves

Main purpose to free the land for settlers from Ontario or Europe

The Buffalo had been wiped out, and Aboriginal people were expected to farm, however the soil was often unsuitable.

Many Aboriginal went hungry due to this.

Defined who was a legal or “status” Indian

Were not considered citizens, not given the right to vote or attend university

Indian Act allowed Ottawa to ban important spiritual ceremonies such as the Potlatch and Sun Dance
