FY17 ANNUAL REPORT

WE BUILD STRENGTH, STABILITY AND SELF-RELIANCE THROUGH SHELTER.

Sleeping on her mother’s pull out couch with her three children, Tiffany Watson could have given up. Instead, Tiffany juggled raising her children while also working full time and attending Durham Tech to further her career. Clearly, she does not shy away from hard work.

Tiffany always dreamed of owning her own home and providing a stable space for her family. As with other aspects of her life, Tiffany was willing to do whatever it took to make that happen.

Through encouragement from her family, Tiffany applied to the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program. To her surprise, she was accepted and was working toward becoming a first time homeowner in no time. “I never thought I would have the opportunity to build my own home,” said Tiffany. “The day they told me I was accepted, I almost couldn’t believe it. It was like winning the lottery.”

Tiffany and her three children have since moved into their Habitat home and their

lives have dramatically improved. “I have my own room, and a special place where I do my homework,” said seven-year-old Malic. “I love coming home every day!”

Your work with Habitat doesn’t just build homes; it builds opportunity for mothers and fathers to read their children a bedtime story and tuck them into their very own room. Building a Habitat home raises the walls that will raise the bar on what their tomorrows can be.

Together, we celebrate the 269 local families, just like Tiffany’s, who now have the opportunity to build memories inside of their safe and affordable homes. Thank you for helping them come home.

NORTHSIDE COMES TO COMPLETION…A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM SUSAN LEVY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Collaboration. Partnership. Teamwork. That has been the model for Habitat’s year in the Northside neighborhood. What a rewarding year it has been, working with neighborhood residents and other community partners to fulfill the vision of this proud and self- reliant neighborhood.

As you see in this report, throughout the year Habitat built nine new homes in Northside while also growing our home

preservation repair program to serve 35 families. Providing new, affordable housing for families, helping long- time residents stay in their homes – that is what Northside residents

asked us to do. What a joy it has been to work together to see the hopes and dreams of a neighborhood come to life.

Of course, I also want to thank YOU, our supporters. I am always moved and inspired by the generous spirit in this community. From serving meals to swinging hammers, from hosting parties to writing checks, you all joined forces to help preserve the fabric of one of Chapel Hill’s oldest and most special neighborhoods. Because of you, 19 kids

will enjoy walking to school or playing basketball at the Hargraves Center. Because of you, seniors who have lived in Northside their entire lives will be able to age in their homes

without worrying about roof leaks or mold infestation. Because of you, parents will be only minutes away from their jobs at Carolina Inn or UNC. On their behalf, I offer my sincere thanks for your ongoing support.

Your partnership makes all the difference.

“ WHAT A JOY IT HAS BEEN TO WORK TOGETHER TO SEE THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF A NEIGHBORHOOD COME TO LIFE.
