Dear Parents/Carers, “We begin Advent by asking Christ to come, to set us free from our sins and from punishment we deserve. Amen” Our assemblies this week have reiterated our high expectations of students in terms of their behaviour, attitude to learning, respect for the school environment and how they treat one another. It’s disappointing to see some of our young people demonstrate acts of unkindness to each other and not fulfilling the Jesuit Values of showing compassion and love. We’ve also been disappointed with the poor litter around the school and the lack of responsibility shown for this. We would really appreciate your support by talking to your child about “Kindness” and it’s important to follow our greatest leader of all time, Jesus Christ and “treat others as you yourself would want to be treated”. We will not accept any form of unkindness to others and this will lead to a formal sanction. If your child is found to be bullying others, this will be treated very seriously and could lead to exclusion. Our MAC Christmas Concert is taking place on Monday 10th December in the Sixth Form at 7pm. Having listened to the rehearsals over the last few weeks, I’m confident this will be a truly fabulous evening. We wish all our students taking part, the very best of luck. Reminder we are supporting the National Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 14th December to raise money for Save the Children as part of a national campaign. We would like all students and staff to wear a Christmas jumper or to wear something “Christmassy” and bring in £1 support of this event. As a school we have raised over £3,000.00 this term through our charitable works which is a fantastic achievement for the school and a very positive way to demonstrate our Catholic Faith in action. Christmas Jumper Day

We are supporting Christmas Jumper day which will be on

Friday 14th December. All monies raised will go to Save the

Children and Macmillan. We would like as many staff and

students to pay £1 towards this. Students can wear non - uniform

on this day as part of this.

One day St Francis of Assisi was doing some weeding and was asked by one of his brothers, Brother Francis what would you do if today the end of the world was upon us.’ St Francis replied, ‘Brother, I would carry on gardening as I am.’ St Francis was ready to meet the Lord and did not fear either the end of the world or Jesus’ return. Advent is the season of ’comings’. We rejoice in Jesu’ first coming, born in a stable, God made man. We look forward to his second coming in glory. We prepare, this Advent, for his coming anew and afresh into our lives. Since Jesus’ Ascension into glory his return has been our focus of hope. For this we long and pray Lord Jesus, you are the Teacher who saves, who sanctifies and guides, who rouses,

moves, forgives and is by our side, day after day as we walk the path of holiness, until you come again in glory.

Saint of the Week

St Ambrose was born into a prominent Christian family in

Trier, Gaul. Legend holds that as an infant, a swarm of

bees settled on him and left a drop of honey; this was

interpreted as a sign of his future eloquence.

Following the early death of his father, St Ambrose studied literature and law and was

appointed Governor, with his headquarters in Milan.

By 374, St Ambrose had become a very popular political figure and was duly elected Bishop

of Milan. However, with no formal Theology training, he initially refused the position

although, eventually and reluctantly he accepted.

As Bishop of Milan, St Ambrose embarked upon a programme of extensive religious

studies, gave his wealth to the poor and adopted an ascetic lifestyle. He also became a

strong opponent of Arianism, partly because of their disputed teachings on the Holy Trinity.

St Ambrose’s Feast day is the 7th December. He is Patron Saint of Milan and, being one of

the most influential ecclesiastical figures of early Christianity, he is also a Doctor of the

Church.

Year 11 History Students Starting on the 17

th December, Year 11 History students are invited to attend afterschool revision sessions on

a Monday. They will run from 3.30 to 4.30. Parents will be informed by email if it is running the week before the session. The sessions will offer guidance on how to answer questions that may come up in the exam, and will be focused on Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the course: International Relations: the changing international order 1918-2001 Germany 1925-1955, the People and the State. LEAVE OF ABSENCE DURING TERM TIME UPDATED INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

The Supreme Court recently reached a decision in the case of Platt v Isle of Wight Council which has clarified the law on unauthorised leave, including holidays, during term time. The parents of children of compulsory school age are required to ensure that they attend school on a regular basis. The Supreme Court has made clear that attending school ‘regularly’ means that the children must attend school on every day that they are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child who is absent from school without authorisation for any length of time are likely to be considered as committing an offence under s444 of the Education Act 1996. Head Teachers retain the ability to authorise leave in accordance with the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006. When considering such requests for a leave of absence, the school are obliged to act within the law. Head Teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances relating to the application. If the leave is granted, head teachers are able to determine the number of school days a child can be absent for. It is for the Head Teacher to decide what is ‘exceptional’ and it is at their discretion if the circumstances warrant the leave to be granted. The school can only consider Leave of Absence requests which are made by the ‘resident’ parent. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis and on its own merits. Where applications for leave of absence are made in advance and refused, the child will be required to be in school on the dates set out in the application. If the child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence, which may result in legal action being taken against the parent(s), by way of a Fixed Penalty Notice. Failure to make an application for leave in advance can also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the parent(s). All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave of Absence will be referred to the Attendance, Compliance and Enforcement Service of Warwickshire County Council It is important to note, Fixed Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each absent child, (for example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent will receive 2 invoices in the amount of £120 each, totalling £240 for both children, this is reduced to £60 per child if paid within 21 days). Where a Fixed Penalty Notice is not paid within the required timeframe as set out on the notice, the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider instigating criminal proceedings under S444 Education Act 1996. Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for Penalty Notices.
