From the Desk of the President

The way we view and experience healthcare is changing at a furious pace. Whether through the Health Care Reform Act or the changing needs of our community, the industry is taking on a person-centered approach to care. This is especially true for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Embracing this custom-tailored approach wholeheartedly, Pioneer Center has added the talents of two distinguished individuals to its Intellectual and Developmental Disability Services Program. Sam Tenuto has taken the reins as the organization’s Director of

Intellectual and Developmental Disability Services and Daniel (D.J.) Newport is the Associate Director of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Services. Sam Tenuto comes to Pioneer Center with 20 years of advancing leadership experience at Clearbrook in Arlington Heights, IL. Sam was most recently Clearbrook’s Director of Community Living Services and his expertise includes responsibility for successful operations, administration and expansion of 32 DHS Licensed Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILA), as well as creating specialized CILA environments for individuals with Autism, crises behavior and faith-based backgrounds. Sam also was responsible for developing and expanding an in-home services program that became one of the largest in Illinois. D.J. comes to Pioneer Center from Countryside Association For People with Disabilities in Palatine, IL, where he was the Site Administrator and Coordinator of Community Employment, Services and Transition programs. D.J. was responsible for increasing day training enrollment 9% in one year after 4 consecutive years of 0% growth. He also increased community

job placements from 5 to 45 in FY12, while also increasing Department of Human Service employment services by 195% over 3 years. D.J. conceptualized and implemented a Transition Services Department serving 7 high school districts and over 20 high schools. Both individuals bring several years of ground-breaking experience and success at building and expanding residential services for individuals with disabilities, as well as creation of unique programs for community-based employment for adults and transition services for adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Those areas of success and expertise tie perfectly with Pioneer Center’s Strategic Plan that utilized parent, client, staff and community input to identify the top priority in McHenry County as the need for residential development and alternatives, followed by the need to transition Day Programs and Employment Services from historical, facility-based programs, to ones that are community-integrated and services designed around the unique needs and desires of each individual we serve. Services for individuals with

developmental disabilities were the core programs that Pioneer Center was founded upon. As education mainstreaming and community integration efforts came to fruition over the past 20 years, there has been a steadily increasing demand for more individualized services that focus on helping individuals live, work and engage in community life. Pioneer Center has recognized this increasing demand and is embarking upon a process to bring “Community-First” initiatives and focus to all of our programs and services, including the development of a partnership with Temple University (one of the Nation’s leading experts in Community-First concepts and initiatives). The hiring of Sam and D.J. are cornerstones of our vision and planned efforts to expand and grow services, as well as transition existing services into the best individualized and community-integrated services available anywhere.

You may know Buddyz for their great food and fun atmosphere. But did you know that the McHenry pizza place also offers great opportunities to Pioneer Center clients? Since they opened in September 2010, Buddyz has actively hired clients from Pioneer Center’s Community Employment Services program. In fact, two individuals have worked there since the restaurant’s grand opening. “It has been phenomenal,” Joe Scarnato, Buddyz owner, explains about how he got started with Pioneer Center and the program, “They came

to a job fair I had before I opened. The program was new to me and we went full throttle with the program. It has worked out for us.” Clients have a variety of responsibilities, everything from dishwashing and wrapping silverware to bussing tables. So next time you’re craving a slice of pizza, think of Buddyz. The Downtown McHenry-Riverwalk location offers outdoor seating with a boat dock and access to the Fox River. You can check out their menu at www.buddyzpizza.com or visit one of their locations in McHenry or Algonquin.

Today’s job market is tough even for people with elevated degrees, years of experience and great skillsets. On top of that, seeking employment as a person with special needs can present unique challenges such as training and job matching based on an individual’s abilities. Easing the way for these individuals and providing additional supports to help ensure their successes, Pioneer Center’s Community Employment Services program eases the way for these individuals by working to offer added support needed to obtain, keep and succeed in a job within our community. Pioneer Center helps adults with varying abilities, vocational skills and workplace experience to be employed through the Community Employment Services Program. Clients that participate in this program include:

• Hearing or visually impaired • Individuals who experienced a stroke, cancer or diabetes • Intellectually or developmentally disabled • Mentally ill (most commonly depression or anxiety) • Physically disabled • Learning disabled

“The people we serve want our community to be strong and succeed,” describes Sam Tenuto, Director of Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, “They bring skill, commitment and enthusiasm to the workforce. We are determined to learn new jobs and expand our presence in the community.” Pioneer Center does not find jobs for people; instead, staff members assist

individuals in finding jobs themselves. Program staff members help clients with resume writing, interviewing skills and completing job applications. They also accompany individuals on job interviews, provide job coaching and assist with establishing natural supports at the worksite. “We help them with job development – how to approach an employer, what to wear and what not to wear to an interview, how to be proactive in following up on an application,” describes Hamilton “Tip” Hale, Job Placement Specialist, “It’s about placing a client with an employer for the long term.” In fact, some clients have worked at the same company for the past 14 years. Pioneer Center has established relationships with many businesses and organizations throughout McHenry County who are very supportive of the program, including Buddyz-A Chicago Pizzeria in McHenry. The program’s goal is to match the community’s employment needs with individuals that have dynamic strengths and talents. “The options for employment are well thought out,” as Joe Scarnato, Buddyz owner says, “The Pioneer clients have always been a great fit, the right person for the job. It’s a very comfortable experience.” Every year Pioneer Center places, on average, over 80 individuals in employment positions including positions in sales, telemarketing, reception, data processing, bus driving, secretarial, food service, factory, social services, retail, janitorial, and more. To learn more about the Community Employment Services Program, call 815.344.1230 and ask for a Job Placement Specialist.

Kaitlyn Owen, of Johnsburg, helped out the Easter Bunny this spring by preparing Easter baskets for the children of McHenry County PADS clients. Only 11-years-old, Kaitlyn contacted McHenry County PADS and received the names and ages of the children currently there. Then, she wrote and sent out nearly 50 emails to family, friends and her soccer team asking for donations. Kaitlyn collected enough items to stuff the baskets full with clothes, toys, candy and other little goodies. She even received over $150 in cash to purchase any of the missing items.

“The children were very excited; when they woke up Easter morning they saw the baskets and their eyes got really big and they ran to get them. I want to thank the people who donated the baskets on behalf of the kids. They will never know how grateful the kids are and how they made Easter very special for them. It’s really tough on a child to live in a homeless shelter and to know people care about them brings hope to the children that life doesn’t have to be bad.” said Chris Long, Program Technician for McHenryCounty PADS

Oh behalf of our clients, we at Pioneer Center thank those who came out to the polls April 9th in support of the Developmental Disabilities Board. We had a small window of time to educate McHenry County citizens and

gain the needed support for the referendum. While it did not pass, we still hope for a Developmental Disabilities Board for McHenry County and plan for it to be a part of the next election. In anticipation of the November 2014 election, Pioneer Center will run a full and complete campaign in partnership with other organizations and community members. As a community, it is our privilege to ensure that every McHenry County citizen has the opportunities and support to fully participate in society. It speaks to the heart of who we are as a community and why we choose to live in McHenry County. 5,236 people in McHenry County have a

developmental disability but right now only 18 percent of them, or about 935 people, receive greatly needed services. The creation of a Developmental Disabilities Board would help serve the other 82% by generating approximately $9 million specifically for the enhancement and creation of programs. Over the next 18 months, we look forward to further educating the community on the need for a Developmental Disabilities Board and appreciate everyone’s continued support in this effort. Adopting a Person-Centered Approach We all think about and plan our lives in different ways. Some people have very clear ideas about what they want and how to achieve it; others take opportunities as they arise. Some people dream and then see how they can match their dreams to reality. For individuals receiving services at Pioneer Center, it is just as important that they have the opportunity to determine who they are, who they want to be and how they and their staff can work together to achieve a better life now and into the future. Person-centered planning (PCP) is not just about services or disability; it is something that extends into every aspect of an individual’s life. Moving away from a traditional staff- or family- directed plan of care and growth, PCP helps focus on the unique needs and desires of each individual. Pioneer Center’s use of this type of planning allows it to embrace new

ways of understanding and working with people with disabilities. At its core is a sharing of power and community inclusion. One of the most common misunderstandings of PCP is that is a short series of meetings whose purpose is to produce a static plan, when in reality it is the stepping stone to an organic, every-changing plan of care and interaction.

Andrea’s Story

Andrea and her son, Zachary, came to Pioneer Center the year after he was born. Born with multiple disabilities, caring for Zachary was overwhelming. The sheer number of doctor appointments and the life expectancy diagnosis placed on her son were a constant source of worry and stress. Through her work over the past few years with Pioneer Center and her case worker, (Krysten), Andrea acquired new coping skills and methods to deal with the day-to-day tasks required for her son. Those new skills were a lifeline for Andrea. This past fall, Andrea needed Pioneer Center’s assistance once more, this time for Zachary. He had grown into a very happy three-year-old who likes

swimming, swinging and being around other kids—and he loves going to school

at the SEDOM Center, but Andrea needed a safe way to get Zachary there. Children with special needs, such as cerebral palsy, require adaptive car seats or seat restraints for their safety in cars. Finding the right car seat for a special needs child can be a costly but necessary task. Traditional car seats do not work. Understanding that transporting a special needs child has a unique set of challenges, Pioneer Center, through the generous donation of a long time supporter, provided Andrea and Zachary with a Therapedic™ Vehicle Restraint System Positioning Car Seat. “I want to thank everyone again for working so hard for this special circumstance; it is going to greatly improve this little boy’s life,” said Krysten, Andrea’s Case Manager. Weighing in at only 11 pounds, the special car seat is easy to maneuver and fits well in Andrea’s car. The lightweight car seat helps with Zachary’s scoliosis because it offers optimal positioning and support. As Andrea says, “It keeps him healthy.”

Person-Centered Planning IS: Person-Centered Planning IS NOT:

a powerful way to support positive change a cure-all

a different way of working together just colored posters instead of paperwork

a better way to listen and respond to people

just a more sophisticated assessment

different for different people a standard package

an invitation to personal commitment a service routine

working towards inclusive communities just a better way to put together service packages

for anyone who wants it just for those who are “ready”

At its core, PCP stays true to these standards: • See people first, rather than diagnostic labels • Use ordinary language and images, rather than professional jargon • Actively search for a person’s gifts and capacities in the context of community life • Strengthen the voice of the person

TEQ of Huntley, IL, presents a check for $5,000 to Pioneer Center. Pictured are Randall Loga, President of TEQ; Christin Kruse, Chief Development Officer of Pioneer Center; Michelle Payseur and Darrel Blocksom, both with TEQ. “We are honored to support Pioneer Center with our contribution through employee donations to the ESCO Foundation. I was very impressed that 90% plus of funding goes into direct services. Throughout the years, TEQ has been touched by Pioneer Center’s development of individuals in need. Contributing to an organization within our community that engages in helping so many lives is very rewarding,” said Randall Loga, President of TEQ.

In 2012, local photographer Robin Pendergrast took photos capturing the plight of homelessness and gathered them in a glossy book entitled “Without Shelter.” The photos were taken all over the world but those that portrayed the homeless in McHenry County carried with

them the passion Robin has to bring light the all too local problem. Proceeds from the book will be donated to McHenry County PADS. How did you get involved with McHenry

County PADS? Initially my knowledge of PADS was

reading about it in the local media. At

the same time there were one or two

homeless individuals that I would see in

and around Crystal Lake, one of whom

is known throughout the community as

“Steve.” At the same time, we have

established a relationship with Pioneer

Center and particularly PADS. I have

been asked to capture images for various

applications. Why does homelessness resonate so

deeply for you? It more than resonates. Having spent

time talking to homeless individuals,

producing a video for Pioneer Center

and PADS and particularly observing the

PADS shelters just the concept of “having

nothing” is both frightening and difficult to imagine even after seeing it. After

observing homeless individuals on the

street in seventeen different countries—

they are images you will never forget.

Have the individuals you’ve met that

were homeless changed the way you

view our community? We don’t do enough. To talk to

people like Steve or those that are

taking advantage of PADS shelters reveals

the need to have more available in

terms of counseling and in some cases

money to help these people reengage in

society. PADS by itself is a remarkable

organization that needs all the financial and manpower support it can acquire. What is one of the most meaningful

photos you’ve taken of homelessness in

our county? The photo of Steve that is featured in

the book is probably the most meaningful

in terms of where he is in the middle of

the street with basically everything he

owns. A backpack, a suitcase on wheels

and his easily identifiable red jacket tells it all, and he is one of the fortunate

ones.

By Cjay Harmer, Prevention Specialist As a parent you never want to believe that your child has been targeted by a bully. Often your child will struggle to deal with the situation on their own, not wanting to call attention to it. But, there are some common signs that you can look for if you suspect your child is being bullied at school. If you think your child is being bullied, even if no symptoms are present, look in to it. Talk to your child. An open line of communication is the best weapon a parent can use to deal with this issue.

1.Fake illnesses on a regular basis

2.Sudden lack of interest in school

3.Drop in grades

4.Signs of physical abuse

5.Reluctant to talk about school

6.Withdrawn from family and friends

7.Depressed

8.Missing personal belongings

9.Change in eating and sleeping patterns

10.Has few or no friends at school These signs do not guarantee that your child is being bullied, but these are indicators that something could be wrong

at school. For additional information, contact Cjay Harmer at [email protected] or 815.338.7360.

Living Waters Lutheran Church’s confirmation class took a tour of McHenry County PADS this past October. Upon learning that the youth living at the transitional home did not have access to a working computer in the computer room, the group made the decision to raise the funds through holding a bake sale to provide the computer as well as software, a printer and supplies. The group also plans to participate in SleepOut for Shelter, a countywide fundraiser for McHenry County PADS coming up on May 11.

At the beginning of March, McHenry County Bicycle Advocates (MCBA) and Epic Cycle and Fitness in McHenry donated six refurbished bicycles to clients. Pioneer Center was the first organization to receive refurbished bikes from MCBA and Epic Cycle and Fitness, with additional bikes expected to be donated in the spring.

“Focus is a natural principle. The sun’s scattered rays are too weak to start a fire, but once you focus them with a magnifying glass they will bring paper to flame in seconds. The same is true of human beings—once their collective energy is focused on a challenge; there is little they can’t accomplish,” says The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey and Jim Huling This past September 2012, the newly -formed leadership team at Pioneer Center embarked on a lofty goal; gathering together to generate a strategic plan that would take the organization into the future. A process created by the Covey group, known as “The 4 Disciplines of Execution” (4DX for short), was introduced to the team as part of the

strategic planning process. Over the past six months I have been working with the team using this 4DX process as a tool for generating a collaborative and clear focus on the agencies future. The leadership team defined two overarching WIGS, an acronym for “wildly important goals”. These goals allow the organization to engage employees and leaders at every level toward a common focus. A new vision emerged along with the development of new value statements that honor the Pioneer Center mission, “To empower individuals to achieve their full potential.” During this time I have witnessed the team assess all the agency programs, services and departments which led to the creation of interdepartmental plans of action. Challenges are being overcome, barriers are being broken down, and problems are being solved, all with a

common purpose and a focused approach. These collaborative plans join together to create a stronger Pioneer Center; one that has the ability to reach out into the community to foster new and innovative ways to offer our programs and services. I concur with the authors of the 4DX process, that there is strength in focused collective energy. I am privileged to have been a part of working with this extremely talented leadership team. It will be their future commitment to the current foundation they have laid, synergized with the collective energy of Pioneer Center’s dedicated direct service staff that will catapult this agency into the future.
