At the age of 30, I have experienced more change, uncertainty and anxiety in my professional life than my Baby Boomer parents ever dreamed of. In my 8 year career I have worked in 4 industries spanning non profit to consulting. I’ve had 7 jobs ranging from the most prestigious consulting companies to a sales job at a manufacturing plant that to this day I still don’t exactly know what they sold! I have had 3 layoffs worked in an office, as a contractor, a temp and virtually from home. I have lived in 5 cities in three different regions of the country, and I have begun and quit two masters’ degree programs. Some might think that my career path has been odd or unfocused, but in fact it has been the opposite. I represent the normal Generation X and Y’ers who will have dozens of jobs in their lifetime. We are a generation who has never seen career stability and in fact would rebel against it. We want to do work we love and we will keep trying until we find out exactly what that is. We are never confined by our current geographic or career path, and we are not afraid to take chances. I, like my generation am determined to carve out my own niche, make my own impact on the world and not be held to any traditional employment notions. This has caused me to be so comfortably flexible that when I was speaking to a Baby Boomer relative who was laid off from her job after 20 years and I heard the despair and hopelessness in her voice I was shocked. It was hard to understand how she had ascribed so much power over her life to a job. So when following that conversation I was laid off from my job that I had worked for three and a half years and heard the same hopelessness in other downsized employees, I began to reflect on my journey. I remembered the truth that has held me through all of my transitions: that the power to create what I need is in me and nothing external can ever take that away. I began journaling and it turned into my first book “The Creator in You: You are not Helpless ”, a compact inspirational guide to give hope in challenging times and remind us that we are not helpless but in fact the help we need is inside of us waiting to be unleashed. So I have made yet another transition into a writing career, but this one is the most important of all because I am transitioning into my passion. Writing is the one thing that has been a constant for me throughout every stage of my life since the time I was 5. So I was confident that this was the right next step. And though I’m sure that my future career path will take me places I never imagined I will make a conscious

effort to embrace each place. Because that’s the wonderful part about being in Generation X and Y: this is not the first major change we’ve had and it won’t be the last – so we are not afraid.
