2004 marked the 150th anniversary of Hartford Hospital’s founding. For thepeople of Hartford Hospital, it was a year of both celebration and reflection. We celebrated the hospital’s many achievements, its growth into one of the world’s premier health care institutions, and its fidelity to the spirit of community service that motivated its founders.

At the same time, we paused to reflect on our history. As we did, weexplored a fascinating story that included astonishing advances in medicine, continual innovation in technology, and countless improvements to buildingsand grounds.

But at the heart of this 150-year saga were the people of HartfordHospital. They were doctors, nurses and administrators. They were benefac-tors, board members, employees and volunteers. Hartford Hospital is whatit is today because they devoted their talents, knowledge, passion and skillsto a single goal: providing the finest care to every patient who entered ourdoors, and, indeed, to the community beyond our walls.

Now, as we look to the future of Hartford Hospital, we recognize thatthe people who will write the next chapter in its history—the people who will take it into its next century—are among us today. While the names andfaces of only a few of them appear in these pages, each and every one is anessential part of the diverse community of care that is Hartford Hospital.

A hospital is a unique institution. It plays a singular role in the community because, as the

source of health care and a center for research and education, its mission is to serve the public

good. But it is also a complex business organization. A hospital must address many of the same

issues—fiscal, strategic, technological, personnel and more—that face any large corporation.

Hospital administrators must be able to achieve a delicate balance, supporting the hospital’s

unique mission while operating an efficient and fiscally sound organization.

Hartford Hospital has always been fortunate in the quality of its administrative

leadership. Those who guided the hospital in its early years were navigating uncharted waters,

yet they built the foundation that enabled the hospital to grow into one of the most respected

medical centers in the world.

Today’s administrators, in concert with the Board of Directors and Medical Staff, are

managing the hospital in a difficult health care environment. Costs are rising, while reimburse-

ment from government programs and private insurers is plummeting. The ranks of the uninsured

and impoverished continue to swell. Skyrocketing costs of professional liability insurance are

burdening hospitals and practitioners alike. Meanwhile, the hospital is committed to providing

the finest care for its patients and competitive compensation and benefits for its employees.

Yet the administrative team is unfailingly optimistic about the future. Hartford

Hospital has innumerable attributes in its favor, including a strong fiscal and philosophical

foundation, a fully engaged Board, a gifted Medical Staff, loyal employees and the support of

thousands of generous donors and volunteers. With so many committed people working with

them for the hospital’s good, today’s administrators look to the future with confidence.

From its earliest days, Hartford Hospital has been distinguished by the quality of its medical

staff. Today’s staff includes doctors who are recognized experts in their fields, and this is helping

the hospital attract some of the finest new doctors in the country.

Ramon Jimenez, M.D., came to Hartford Hospital in the summer of 2003 after completing

a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is a general surgeon specializing in

surgical treatment of upper-gastrointestinal cancers.

“The types of surgeries I do can’t be done in a community hospital,” Jimenez says.

“They require extensive resources. Hartford Hospital has all the personnel and equipment

I need to perform these surgeries in a way that is comfortable and safe for the patient.”

Jimenez believes that minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgical procedures will play

a growing role in the future of surgery and that genetic analysis of tumors will eventually enable

physicians to better tailor therapies to specific cancer cells.

Another recent addition to Hartford Hospital’s medical staff is gastroenterologist

Michelle Smedley, M.D. After completing her fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New

York City, she chose Hartford Hospital because “it’s a real gem—providing wonderful tertiary

care in a comfortable, livable community.”

Smedley, who directs Hartford Hospital’s Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease,

commends the hospital for creating numerous centers of excellence for subspecialty care.

“Through these centers, Hartford Hospital is giving area patients access to a level of

care that had previously been available only in larger cities,” Smedley says.

As Medical Staff President and a seasoned physician, Arthur Tarantino, M.D., has

a unique perspective on the future of the hospital and of health care. He believes the hospital

will continue to attract the best doctors for a number of reasons, including the diversity and

complexity of the medical problems it treats and its education and research components.

But he is concerned about the effects of economic pressures on health care.

“The citizens of the United States have to decide how much they value health and health

care,” Tarantino says. “We must either put a high value on it and pay the price or put a minimal

value on it and provide minimal access to everybody. Science will always expand, but access to

care may be greatly altered because of economics.”

The nurse’s role today is vastly different from what it was when Hartford Hospital opened one

of the nation’s first schools of nursing in 1877.

At Hartford Hospital, nurses make autonomous decisions on patient care, are valued

members of interdisciplinary teams, and serve as senior administrators and policy-makers.

Because of Nursing’s role at Hartford Hospital, the American Nurses Credentialing Center

this year presented the hospital with the prestigious Magnet Recognition for Excellence in

Nursing Services.

Laura Caramanica, R.N., Ph.D., Vice President of Nursing, sees the role of nurses

continuing to expand. They will be leaders in “evidence-based” practice, documenting

the effectiveness of therapies to identify the best practices. She also foresees a continued

expansion of the role of advanced practice nurses (APRNs).

“In the past 10 years, the number of APRNs here has tripled,” Caramanica says.

“Today, they’re managing patients, developing treatment plans and handling day-to-day care.

I think we’ll see much more of this in the coming years.”

Aimee McDaniel, B.S.N., R.N., C.N.N., Nurse Manager of Dialysis Services, came

to Hartford Hospital because of the respect and empowerment nurses are accorded. She says

that the hospital’s creation of the “clinical leader” role for R.N.s with exceptional expertise

and experience was an important step in enhancing patient care.

“Clinical leaders are champions in their fields,” McDaniel says. “They are problem-

solvers and critical thinkers. If there’s difficulty with a patient’s treatment, for example, the

clinical leader can step in and help devise a better alternative.”

Nurses today are a driving force in bringing about changes that benefit patients.

Cheryl Ficara, R.N., M.S., is Nurse Director of General Surgery. One of the units she oversees

is the hospital’s Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit. She is part of an interdisciplinary team

that is transforming critical care to achieve better outcomes for patients. It’s a role she relishes.

“In the past, making even the smallest changes took a very long time,” Ficara says.

“Today our environment is very fast-paced. We’ve learned to make small changes and, if they’re

successful, build upon them rapidly to make larger changes.”

She adds, “I think the future is going to be very exciting. Nurses at all levels are in

pivotal positions to explore how we can do things differently in order to do them better.”

It takes people with an amazing array of backgrounds and skills to make Hartford Hospital the

world-class health care facility it is today. The hospital is one of the city’s largest employers,

with more than 6,000 people on its rolls. Many of them are not health care professionals, but the

important work they do benefits patients, families and their fellow employees every moment of

every day. They keep the buildings clean, the power flowing, the temperature comfortable, the

food wholesome and much, much more.

Kris Armogida, a Plumber/Steamfitter in the hospital’s Mechanical Department, is

one of these indispensable people. A skilled tradesman, Armogida has earned state licenses in

heating and cooling, plumbing, and sheet metal, and is planning to go back to school to earn

his contractor’s license so he can further his career at the hospital.

Currently assigned to the campus of The Institute of Living, Armogida performs general

plumbing repairs and works on the facility’s steam heating system. After years of working on

construction sites prior to joining the hospital, Armogida says he enjoys the “people” contact his

job involves.

“I like coming to work,” he says. “I like the people I work with. When I respond to a call,

people are glad to see me, because they know I’m going to fix the problem. And when I walk out

of a patient’s room, I feel good because I was able to take care of their problem.”

John Wrobel is Unit Leader in the hospital’s Engineering Department and is

Chairperson of the Employee Council. A 27-year employee of the hospital, he says his work on

the Employee Council has broadened his perspective.

“It’s easy to get hung up on what you’re doing, and your vision can get a little narrow,”

Wrobel says. “This has let me see the workings of the hospital from the grass roots to the

administration.”

Wrobel has a mental image that illustrates the way he perceives the role of employees

in the hospital.

“When I picture a patient being treated by a doctor or a clinical person, I see standing

shoulder to shoulder with them many other people—people from environmental services,

electrical, plumbing, the person who does the billing. You need all those people and more to

take care of that one patient.”

The first thing Hartford Hospital’s founders did after deciding to start a hospital was to launch

a fund-raising campaign. Area citizens responded generously, contributing a total of $20,000

and enabling the campaign to reach its goal.

That 1847 campaign was the beginning of a tradition of philanthropy that is alive and

well today and that continues to benefit all those whose lives are touched by Hartford Hospital.

This year the hospital celebrated the successful conclusion of its 150th Anniversary Campaign,

to which generous donors made commitments totaling more than $78 million.

William Thomson, a Corporator and longtime volunteer in the hospital’s development

efforts, is the fourth generation of his family to support the hospital through philanthropy.

His great-grandfather bequeathed a bed fund to the hospital in the early 20th century, and his

grandfather and father were both Board members and donors.

“My father didn’t tell his children what to do, but he certainly set a great example,”

Thomson says. “I do this because the presence of a strong hospital materially improves the quality

of life in the community. Since the hospital affects everyone, it’s a wonderful way to have an

impact on a broader level.”

John O’Connell and Bret Maffett, Co-owners of a Glastonbury insurance agency, are

volunteers and donors themselves, but are also active in encouraging others to give.

“The hospital touches so many people that calling on potential donors isn’t difficult,”

O’Connell says. “Plus, there’s a tremendous need today in health care, and the dollars we all

contribute are leveraged very effectively to the common good.”

“Today, philanthropy is a necessary part of the whole enterprise of running the hospital,”

says Bret Maffett. “It’s not just nice, it’s absolutely critical to the hospital’s ability to fulfill its

mission.”

Stacy Nerenstone, M.D., is a medical oncologist and a Corporator. She is also a donor

because, like most physicians, she sees firsthand the link between philanthropy and her

patients’ lives.

“The cancer research I’m involved with is extremely important to my patients and to

the future of cancer treatment,” Nerenstone says, “yet the government doesn’t cover the cost.

Hartford Hospital has supported research efforts in cancer even though it’s not profit-making.

The hospital has stepped up to the plate to help my patients, so I believe I need to step up to

the plate to help the hospital continue that support in the future.”

The Hartford Hospital Auxiliary (then called the Women’s Auxiliary) was founded in 1921, and

the Volunteer Corps in 1942. While the spirit of service remains the same, both groups today are

more diverse. The Auxiliary, with a current membership of 400, welcomes both men and women,

and a number of its Board members are employed full-time. The 1,000 or so people active with

Volunteer Services include retirees, working adults, students, immigrants awaiting working

papers, people seeking job skills and many others.

Fund raising is a major activity of the Auxiliary. “Our goal is to fund worthy projects that

are not covered by the hospital’s capital budget,” says Auxiliary Co-president Linda Goldman.

Recent gifts from the Auxiliary have made possible a boutique at the Cancer Center, a state-of-

the-art Simulation Center for medical education and, this year, a women’s heart health program.

The group also annually funds scholarships for the children of hospital employees and an

employee longevity award program known as the Quarter Century Club.

“People choose to be active with this group because health concerns cut across every

socioeconomic and cultural line,” Goldman says. “The money we raise goes to very specific

projects, so you see the results of your efforts immediately and feel you’re doing something

worthwhile.”

Volunteers serve throughout the hospital, assisting staff, spending time with patients,

comforting families—even bringing in canine visitors.

“Today, we have many volunteer roles that directly help staff and patients,” says

Volunteer Services Manager Kelley Boothby. “Volunteers want to know that what they’re doing

makes a difference and that their work is valued.”

Rosario Garcia, a volunteer in the Emergency Department, has logged nearly 400 hours

since August 2003.

“I love being a volunteer,” Rosario says. “I love to talk with the people and help them feel

comfortable. I tell them, ‘Everything will be O.K. You’ve come to the right place.’ I try to help the

nurses by getting things from the pharmacy for them. And I often act as the interpreter when

doctors and nurses are treating Spanish-speaking patients.”

Rosario recalls a family that came into the Emergency Department last summer after a

car accident. She cared for the couple’s infant in the waiting area so the mother could be by her

injured husband’s side in the treatment room.

“This family had had a tragedy in their life, and they needed support,” Rosario says.

Hartford Hospital was founded to serve the community, and it continues to be guided by the

community through its Board of Directors. The Board works with management and the Medical

Staff to set overall direction for the hospital and make crucial decisions about its future.

“One of Hartford Hospital’s unique strengths is the positive working relationship among

the Board, the Medical Staff and the administration,” says Board Chairman Martin Wolman.

“Cultivating that collaboration is vital to the hospital’s continued success.”

Board members are volunteers. They freely lend their time, talent and expertise to

the role because they believe in the hospital’s mission and want to make a contribution to their

community.

“Board service is incredibly interesting and rewarding,” says Laura Estes, a member of

the Board’s Executive Committee. “It’s intellectually challenging, because medicine is fascinating

and the hospital is such a sophisticated and complex business. But it also touches everyone’s life

in a profound way. So, as a citizen of this community—and a human being on this planet—I find

it satisfying to be part of efforts to deliver the highest-quality care to the people we serve.”

Today’s Board members will guide the hospital through particularly challenging times.

“Revenue pressures, cost pressures, increasing competition and rising expectations

are just some of the challenges all hospitals, especially large, urban ones, will continue to face,”

says Ramani Ayer, Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee. “As the baby boom generation

continues to age, it will place huge demands on the hospital to deliver outstanding services

while controlling costs.”

Laura Estes sees the hospital meeting those challenges by continuing to adopt new

technologies, re-engineer work flows and improve efficiencies. She also believes that growing

consumer focus on hospitals’ rankings and statistical outcomes will require Hartford Hospital

to communicate more directly with the public.

“We have to provide the very finest care, treat everyone with respect and ensure that the

hospital is financially solvent,” Estes says. “Our goal is to make Hartford Hospital a place where

patients want to come for care, medical professionals want to practice, and people want to work.”

“I believe that, working together, we will rise to the challenges we face,” Ramani Ayer

says. “The future will find Hartford Hospital a stand-out institution in the community.”

“As a citizen of this community—and a human being on this planet—I find it satisfying to be part of efforts to deliver the highest-quality care to the people we serve.”

Hartford Hospital’s 150th anniversary provided a unique

opportunity to consider the contributions of those who came

before us. It also prompted an even greater focus on how best

to position the hospital for the future, so it has the technology,

the talent and the resources to meet the challenges ahead. The

Board, working with others within the hospital community,

will be exploring these issues during the coming year.

The availability of funds necessary to underwrite

the capital costs of the future is, of course, critical. That was a

driving force behind Hartford Hospital’s 150th Anniversary

Campaign. I am pleased to be able to report that the generosity

of donors and the commitment of volunteers and staff members

brought the campaign to a highly successful conclusion.

The Anniversary Campaign began in 2000 with an

ambitious goal of $70 million. When the campaign closed in

2004, it had exceeded that goal by a significant margin, realiz-

ing a total of $78.6 million. The importance of this achievement

cannot be overstated. These funds will help Hartford Hospital

stay on the leading edge of medicine and continue to provide

truly outstanding care to people throughout our community

and region.

More than 7,500 donors participated in the Anniversary

Campaign, including 100 percent of Board members, 86 percent

of Medical Staff department leaders, 100 percent of hospital vice

presidents and 324 physicians. People were generous with their

time, as well. During the course of the campaign, 215 volunteers

served on a Fund Development committee. Many thanks to each

and every person who took part.

I would like to give special thanks to Anniversary

Campaign Chairman Don Frahm, Vice Chairman Marty Becker,

Development Committee Chairman Roger Klene, and Vice

President for Philanthropy Carol Garlick and her staff. Their

tireless efforts were essential to exceeding our goal.

Along with philanthropy, close collaboration among

physicians, Board members and administrators is critical to a

hospital’s success. The annual Hamilton Retreat encourages

this by bringing all of us together to discuss key issues. We have

decided to further enhance communication by reinvigorating

the Joint Conference Committee. The group, made up of

representatives from the Board, the Medical Staff and the

Administration, has already had one meeting and will meet

several times throughout the coming year.

As we close this year, I would like to thank the many

people who make the hospital the outstanding institution it is,

especially our superb administrators; gifted Medical Staff;

dedicated hospital staff, Board members and Corporators;

and all of the volunteers and Auxiliary members who bring so

much to the life of the hospital. The efforts of recent Auxiliary

Co-president Hillary Pease and current Co-presidents Debbie

May and Linda Goldman are particularly appreciated.

It is a privilege to be part of such an exceptional

group of people.

This year marked a significant milestone for Hartford Hospital

as we observed the 150th anniversary of our founding.

Highlights of our yearlong celebration included a special

Black and Red Ball, the creation of a book and video on the

hospital’s history, numerous employee-focused events and

activities, and the Medical Staff ’s sponsorship of the

Connecticut Forum on Ethics. Many thanks to everyone

who helped make this landmark year such a memorable one.

We had other reasons to celebrate, as well. In January,

Hartford Hospital received the coveted Magnet Recognition

for Excellence in Nursing Services from the American Nurses

Credentialing Center. Fewer than 100 hospitals have earned

this prestigious award. The distinction reflects well on Nursing

and the entire hospital. It will help us continue to attract staff

of the very highest caliber.

There was more good news in February, when we

learned that the hospital had received a very positive report

following a review by the Joint Commission on Accreditation

of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Every member of the

hospital community can be proud of this achievement.

This year saw the launch of several new programs.

Hartford Hospital’s Institute of Living opened the Memory

Disorders Center to provide evaluation and early detection of

dementia. As a result of our acquisition of St. Francis’ partial

hospital and school programs, The Institute now has a second

satellite location of the Grace W. Webb School. The Webb School

at Bloomfield provides special education and clinical services to

students in grades 8 through 12. July saw the opening of our

state-of-the-art Simulation Center, which provides invaluable,

hands-on professional education using realistic manikins,

sophisticated software, and exact replicas of trauma, emergency

and intensive care units. The Board also approved the creation

of an Ambulatory Surgery Center at West Hartford’s Blue

Back Square. The center is expected to open in late 2006. In

Newington, the staff of Jefferson House has taken on manage-

ment of Cedar Mountain Commons, our independent- and

assisted-living residence.

We continue to enhance quality of care through leading-

edge technology. This year we became the first medical center

in Connecticut to use an advanced robotic device, the da Vinci

Surgical System, to perform minimally invasive prostate

surgery. Soon Hartford Hospital will become the first to use

the device for cardiothoracic procedures, as well.

Several significant appointments occurred this year,

including: Laurine Bow, Ph.D., as Vice President of Research;

Orlando Kirton, M.D., as Director of Surgery; Steve O’Neill as

Vice President of Information Services; and Joel Sorosky, M.D.,

as Director of Women’s Health.

As we close one chapter of the hospital’s history and

begin to write the next, I look forward to continued collaboration

among the Board, Medical Staff and management. It will take

all of us, working together, to ensure that Hartford Hospital will

meet the health care needs of this and future generations.
