In everything we do, we believe we are beloved of God.

We believe you are, too.

We are people of all ages who gather seeking a deeper experience of God. We are a transformative

community that nurtures spiritual growth in ways that help people live meaningful lives, then sends them

out as followers of the risen Christ to make a difference in the world.

Prelude Sarabande on “Land of Rest” Gerald Near

The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.

(vss. 1,2, 4)

Confession of Sin

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

Officiant: O Lord, open our lips. People: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The mercy of the Lord is everlasting: Come let us adore him.

Jubilate (sung by congregation)

Psalm 145: 8-9, 15-22, 18-19

8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, * slow to anger and of great kindness. ||

9 The Lord is loving to everyone * and his compassion is over all his works.

15 The Lord upholds all those who fall; * he lifts up those who are bowed down. ||

16 The eyes of all wait upon you, O Lord, * and you give them their food in due season.

17 You open wide your hand * and satisfy the needs of every living creature. ||

18 The Lord is righteous in all his ways * and loving in all his works.

19 The Lord is near to those who call upon him, * to all who call upon him faithfully. ||

20 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; * he hears their cry and helps them.

21 The Lord preserves all those who love him, * but he destroys all the wicked. ||

22 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord; * let all flesh bless his holy Name for ever and ever.

18 Glory to the Father and to the Son* And to the Holy Spirit: ||

19 As it was in the beginning, is now* And will be forever. Amen.

The Lessons

First Reading Isaiah 55:1-5

Thus says the Lord: "Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you."

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Second Reading Romans 9:1-5

I am speaking the truth in Christ-- I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit-- I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn Surely it is God who saves me Hymnal 679

The Holy Gospel Matthew 14:13-21

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon The Rev. Paul A. Metzler

The Apostles’ Creed (remain on mute)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Chat is open for you to offer your petitions and thanksgivings beginning at this time.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

We pray for our enemies and those with whom we disagree. Take away our arrogance and hatred, and unite us in bonds of love.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. We pray for ..., and for all those who come to us seeking sobriety, food, or any other human need, and for those we now name. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble. That they may be delivered from their distress.

For the healing of those affected with the coronavirus, for those at high risk, for the medical professionals and caregivers, and for strength and appreciation as we help each other through our feelings of fear, anxiety, and isolation.

Silence

Give to the departed eternal rest, especially Marjorie Taylor, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our needs and those of others.

Silence

Concluding Collect

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Priest: Let us bless the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
