In fact, I would say it is a central theme throughout the New Testament, as early writers like Paul connected it with the power of Christs resurrection. To put it in modern terms, we would say that our God is a God of second chances. To put it in theological terms, we would say that the God of creation is also the God of re-creation. It reminds me of one of my favorite hymns, Morning Has Broken”, which was made popular by Cat Ste- vens in the 70’s. It was originally written, however, in the 1930’s by the English poet Eleanor Farjeon. Inspired by the beauty of a small village in East Sussex, she wrote the words to fit the traditional Gaelic tune, "Bunessan ”, which had previously been a Christmas hymn. In it, Farjeon compares Gods re-creation of the new dayto that of a morning garden: Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass. I think Farjeon chose the perfect met- aphor for how Gods goodness has the power to re-fresh and re-create, whether it be in an English garden or in the everyday places of our lives. With that said, I offer this short note as a reminder of what the new year may hold for you. There is nothing inherently magical about January 1 st ; but there is something spiritual about new beginnings. I guess they remind us of things like green gardens covered in the morning dew, or more importantly, the power God has to re-create all things into something new. So, my prayer for each of us is this: whatever we need to be made new in this coming year, may the Spirit of Christ guide us and nourish us towards a new beginning. Grace and Peace - Richard

As a diverse family of believers in Jesus Christ, our mission is to glorify God

by celebrating and sharing God’s renewing and transforming love as:

We worship the living God with joy and thanksgiving.

We teach the Word of God to deepen our faith and to grow in

our love for Jesus Christ.

We serve others through sharing the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We fellowship to enrich and energize our life together as a congregation.

We nurture and embrace all God’s children.

“From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: every-thing old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” 2 Corinthians 5: 16-17

If there is one thing I love about the Christian tradition, it is the idea of new beginnings. In fact, I would say it is a central theme throughout the New Testament, as early writers like Paul connected it with the power of Christ’s resurrection. To put it in modern terms, we would say that our God is a God of second chances. To put it in theological terms, we would say that the God of creation is also the God of re-creation.

It reminds me of one of my favorite hymns, “Morning Has Broken”, which was made popular by Cat Ste-vens in the 70’s. It was originally written, however, in the 1930’s by the English poet Eleanor Farjeon. Inspired by the beauty of a small village in East Sussex, she wrote the words to fit the traditional Gaelic tune, "Bunessan”, which had previously been a Christmas hymn. In it, Farjeon compares God’s “re-creation of the new day” to that of a morning garden: “Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass.” I think Farjeon chose the perfect met-aphor for how God’s goodness has the power to re-fresh and re-create, whether it be in an English garden or in the everyday places of our lives.

With that said, I offer this short note as a reminder of what the new year may hold for you. There is nothing inherently magical about January 1st; but there is something spiritual about new beginnings.

Thank you so much for the lovely cards and kind words following the death of my sister in England. All were of much comfort to me.

Shirley Burton

To our Church Family,

Following the recent passing of my father, I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of sympathy and kindness through your cards, notes, calls and to those who attended the memorial service in Marietta. During these difficult times, I am grateful for the loving support of my church family.

Robert Pender

Dear Church Family,

We cannot begin to express our appreciation of the many prayers, texts, calls, cards, and words of support we have received during our granddaughter Amelia’s surgery and recovery. Though Boston was hundreds of miles away, we felt the constant love and support of our church family in a profound way. We are thrilled to report that Amelia’s recovery has been remarkable and her prognosis is very good. We are blessed to be part of this wonderful church family

Don't miss our annual Souper Bowl Event on Sunday, Febru-ary 2, 2020, immediately after the morning worship service. Bring your specialty chili, soup or dessert to Hopkins Hall be-ginning at 10:00 am. Feel free to bring any yummy food to share

without competing. Beverages, cornbread and condiments will be provided. A panel of judges will decide and announce the 2020 winner for the chili, soup and dessert categories. Bragging rights go to the first place winner in each of the 3 categories and a place on our Souper Bowl Award plaque.

Donations will support Plentiful Harvest Kitchen and Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, local organizations that work to reduce hunger.

Let’s all tackle hunger in Rock Hill!

Ready, Set, Play Ball and enjoy the food and fun!

2020 Flower Calendar: Please consider donating flowers for Sunday morning worship services. You can honor someone on their anniversary, baptism, birthday, etc. or in memory of a special friend or loved one. To reserve a date, please see the Flower Cal-endar on the bulletin board outside the church office.

Help for HOPE

During the month of December, our congregation donated 80 packages of oatmeal for the clients of Project HOPE. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank you to everyone who made cookies and/or helped with setting up, serving, and cleaning up for the Taste of Christmas Cookie Walk on December 6! We sold out of cookies within the first hour and were able to donate a little over $1000 to mission efforts! This annual

ChristmasVille event could not happen without the support of our congregation.

Thank you!

Happy New Year!

Bible Study

Our Tuesday Morning Bible Study will resume on January 14th, as we continue our exploration of the New Testament Story by David L. Barr. This fascinating book covers the major themes, the historical background, and the cultural influences present during the writing of the New Testament. While this study serves more as an overview of each book rather than a verse by verse study, it definitely uncovers the world behind the text and offers a deeper insight into what was originally written. The Bible Study meets on Tuesday morning at 9:15 am.

Many opportunities are available at Bethelwoods.

Youth: Kids Night Out: (5-12 years old) one Friday each month 5:30-10 :00

Jan. 17 ~ Once Upon A Time at Camp ($15 for first child, $10 for each additional child)

Adults: Creative Crafters - 2nd Tuesday each month. $15 includes materials for craft and lunch.

Jan 14 ~ Macrame Wall Hanging

Third Tuesday Together (TTT) third Tuesday each month 10:30 with guest speakers and

activities. Lunch $10/event. Jan. 21 ~ General Computer Skills Class

We serve others through sharing the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Yarns of Love – The ladies of Yarns of Love are busy stitching for different causes every Thursday afternoon in the church parlor. We make prayer shawls and lapghans (small afghans) for the patients of Hospice and Community Care, as well as any of our members who are experiencing serious illness. In addition to that, we make patriotic lapghans for veterans who are served at

Hospice and Community Care. Each veteran receives a patriotic lapghan at his/her final pinning ceremony. It is quite a moving ceremony near the end of the veteran’s earthly life. Besides patients of HCC, we make every newborn in our congregation a white baby blanket to be presented when their rose is on the table announcing their arrival. (We have three little Presbyterians on the way now!)

Our church’s Mission and Outreach Committee makes a donation to our group each year to purchase yarn. We are so appreciative of their gift since yarn usually costs between $15-20 for each item we make. (Since our group began, we have made over 700 pieces!) When we shop for yarn, we shop very judiciously and use sales and coupons to make the most of the money we have. We often save as much as we spend! If you would like to make a donation to our group to purchase yarn, your gifts would be greatly appreciated and wisely used.

We hope that each piece we make is meaningful to the recipient and lets them feel God’s presence and love. We, too, feel that participating in this ministry is a blessing to us. For more information, please see any of the ladies in our group.

(Peggy Casey, Karen Holt, Linda Hutchison, Carol Lambert, Cathy Kayser, Mary Anne Sheppard, Carroll Terry, Margaret Ann Tice)

Help for HOPE: For our January contribution, please consider bringing one or more cans of soup to benefit the clients of Project Hope. It doesn’t have to be name brand; store brand is fine. Large cans, small cans, or individual servings are all needed. Vegetable, chicken noodle, tomato, any and all flavors are useful. Bring in your contribution and leave it in the narthex by January 19. All food collected will be taken to the HOPE House the next week. Your contributions are appreciated by the Mission Committee and more importantly, the recipients who need it most.

January 12, 2020 we will host the Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event at FPC. We will need volunteers from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and all participants must sign up online using the link below. Elementary aged children are allowed to assist with adult supervision. For more information, contact Jimmy Hicklin ([email protected]) or Meredith Briggs ([email protected])
