www.facebook.com/blacktowncatholics Sunday, 9 February Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A Our Parish Mission Statement Mary, Queen of the Family Parish is a welcoming, diverse, multicultural, Catholic community. We seek: to live, teach and share the joy of the Gospel; to grow as disciples of Jesus through prayer, witness and action and to respond to the needs of the family in the Blacktown community and beyond. We were all shocked and saddened by the news of the tragic deaths of the three Abdallah children Sienna, Angelina, and Antony and their cousin Veronique Sakr last weekend. But one thing that has inspired many in the wake of this tragic accident is the response of Leila, the three siblings mother, to her loss. She spoke of her heartbreak, of her hope for fairness in the courts, but also of her forgiveness. Yet she did so without any sense of superficiality or hollowness. Her forgiveness was real, and it was real because it acknowledged the immense pain she was experiencing but also of her knowledge that her faith asked this forgiveness of her. This message of forgiveness has now been spread all over the country through her interview. In this, Leila has shown us a living example of Jesuswords to us today in the Gospel. She did not let the light of her faith die even in the midst of such an horrific event, but she let it shine for all our nation to see. And this light has since spread with prayers and vigils being offered for the family – to which we should join our own prayers. The light of faith has shown brightly in the midst of this tragedy because Leila, her family, and many others have let it shine. But this witness of faith is not just for such moments – as Leila and her family certainly know. We dont have to wait for tragedy to strike before we let our faith shine like Leilas. The light of faith shines first in the little things, the ordinary things before it shines in big things. Our faith ought to shine in the way we care for each other at home, the way we forgive each other at home, the way we talk to others and about others, the way we plan our day, our week, our month. A faith is not to be something for specific occasions: it is not meant to be the Sunday thing’, or the when I need it thing’. We should let our faith touch every corner of our life, so that it becomes the life thing’. Indeed, if we start small, offering up little things in love to Jesus, turning in prayer at little moments in the day, trying to do little things with great faith, then our faith will shine for all the world to see. Sunday, 9 February Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A

Our Parish Mission Statement Mary, Queen of the Family Parish is a welcoming, diverse, multicultural, Catholic community.

But one thing that has inspired many in the wake of this tragic accident is the response of Leila, the three sibling’s mother, to her loss. In this, Leila has shown us a living example of Jesus’ words to us today in the Gospel. We don’t have to wait for tragedy to strike before we let our faith shine like Leila’s. The light of faith shines first in the little things, the ordinary things before it shines in big things. Our faith ought to shine in the way we care for each other at

home, the way we forgive each other at home, the way we talk to others and about others, the way we plan our day, our week, our month. A faith is not to be something for specific occasions: it is not meant to be ‘the Sunday thing’, or the ‘when I need it thing’. We should let our faith touch every corner of our life, so that it becomes ‘the

life thing’. Indeed, if we start small, offering up little things in love to Jesus, turning in prayer at little moments in the day, trying to do little things with great faith, then our faith will shine for all the world to see.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON: Ps 94:6-7

O come, let us worship God and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God

FIRST READING: IS 58:7-10 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PS 111:4-9. R. V.4 A light rises in the darkness for the upright. SECOND READING: 1 COR 2:1-5 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Jn 8:12 Alleluia, alleluia! I am the light of the world, says the Lord; the man who follows me will have the light of Life. Alleluia!

GOSPEL: Mt 5:13-16 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.

‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’

COMMUNION ANTIPHON: Ps 106:8-9

Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.
