On behalf of West Chester University, I am pleased to welcome you to our 2011-2012 season of cultural and community events.

West Chester University is proud to contribute to the rich cultural environment of our region. Annually, WCU hosts about 75,000 audience members for concerts, theatre and dance programs, lectures, exhibits, and other cultural events, many of which feature student and faculty fine and performing artists. Numerous campus performances and exhibits are held in the new Swope Music Building and the Performing Arts Center, which opened in the spring of 2007 and are cited among the top teaching, learning, and performing venues in the nation. Another popular venue is the historic Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall, in Philips Memorial Building, the University’s signature building.

I appreciate the enthusiastic support that our neighbors throughout the region show for West Chester University’s cultural arts and the students, faculty, and staff who present them. Such support and our thriving regional arts collaborations—which include partnerships with the Kennett Symphony, Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and Brandywine Ballet—are essential for flourishing arts programs. Our cultural partners can now be found around the globe, with WCU faculty and students bringing their talents to destinations ranging from Broad Street to China.

Brooklyn-based Tim and the Space Cadets play songs about the important things in life: pizza parties, snow days, and summer vacations. Songwriters Tim Kubart and Matt Puckett weave their own childhood memories through textured pop tunes, rockers, and lullabies, including their XMKiDs chart-topping single “Superhero.” They’re currently hard at work recording “Anthems for Adventure,” their first full-length album, about adventures as grand as riding a cardboard rocketship to space and as small as giving up old sneakers for new ones. A Space Cadets set is engaging, interactive, and totally awesome– a true indie rock experience for families and fans.

A Christmas WonderlandA Musical Holiday Spectacular

Born in Puerto Rico, critically acclaimed saxophonist David Sánchez fuses a straight ahead jazz sound with African, Afro-Cuban and Caribbean influences. The multiple Grammy-Award winner recently released his eighth album, Cultural Survival, to heralded reviews.

Sacred Earth brings two rich and ancient Indian visual art traditions– Warli paintings and Kolam rice flour drawings– into conversation with Bharatanatyam. Performed against large-scale painted panels by master folk artist Anil Chaitya Vangad, Sacred Earth transforms the stage into a sacred space and invokes a deep connection to the Earth. Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy’s choreography gives physical form to the spiri-tual expression of the Warlis and Kolams, illustrating the ephemeral nature of our existence and celebrating the ongo-ing, ever-renewing cycle of life.

Missoula Children’s Theatre presents

Back by popular demand, the Missoula Children’s Theatre, the country’s pre-eminent profession-al children’s theatre company, returns to West Chester University and will be recruiting more than 50 local children to stage an original musical adaptation of The Wiz of the West.

Rumi’s popularity here is largely the work of translator Coleman Barks and artist Michael Green who collaborated to create the best-seller The Illuminated Rumi, a modern-day manuscript using a marriage of words and art to illuminate the mysteries of the human spirit. A 60’s counter-cultural revolutionary, this art-ist/author has over 2,000,000 books in print Green expands his vision to turn the Knauer gallery into sacred space with a large scale installation of work.

During 2011-2012 the College of Visual and Performing Arts plans another vibrant, new cultural arts season. As always, we continue to offer a wide array of art exhibits, theatrical programs, dance productions, and concerts by our stellar artist faculty and notable student ensembles. From our on-campus events to those off campus, we are committed to excellence in all the cultural arts. My colleagues and I are also very proud of our ever-growing number of artistic and educational partnerships with community, regional, national, and international arts organizations.

Music and all forms of creative artistic expression bridge differences in background and experience, introduce fresh perspective, and expand our vision. The cultural arts also preserve our heritage, add pleasure to the present, and provide a foundation for the future. Within this spirit, and in keeping with the University’s ongoing global initiative, is our expansion of arts programs throughout the world. Students and faculty regularly have the opportunity to study and perform abroad in a number of countries, including China, England, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Egypt, Austria, and Costa Rica.

College of Visual and Performing Arts students and faculty have a long tradition of providing high-quality artistic programs to the community and region. If you have yet to attend one of our events or have not done so in some time, you will be impressed by the degree of excellence. Many CVPA cultural events are available to you without charge or at a very reasonable cost. Integrative Health Conference The Human-Animal Bond and Its Impact on HealthMarch 30-31

Keynote Speaker: Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Hu-mane Society of the United States (HSUS).

During his 17 years with the Humane Society of the United States, including seven as president and CEO, Wayne Pacelle has played a leading role in transforming the HSUS, the nation’s largest animal protection charity, into a dynamic public force and voice for all ani-mals. Taking a special interest in law reform, he has been the lead-

ing strategist for more than a score of successful ballot initiatives that outlawed cock-fighting, cruel factory farming practices, bear baiting, negligent puppy mill operations, and a host of other inhumane practices. Pacelle is the author of the bestselling book The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them. He has been profiled in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times, and has appeared on almost all of the major network television programs– from 60 Minutes to the News Hour with Jim Lehrer. Pacelle was named one of Nonprofit Times’ “Executives of the Year” in 2005 for his leadership in responding to the Hurricane Katrina crisis. Pacelle received his B.A. in history and studies in the environment from Yale University in 1987.

Brandywine Ballet continues to raise the barre on Chester County dance! In recent years, the com-pany has earned permission from the George Bal-anchine Trust to perform Balanchine ballets, as well as premiered works by reputable Philadelphia choreographers Matthew Neenan, Ronen Koresh, Meredith Rainey, and Christopher Fleming. The company has gained recognition from nationally published Dance Magazine for its thought-provok-ing mix of classical and contemporary ballet, and was recently featured in WHYY’s Experience “video postcard” series.

Drawn from over one–half million feet of motion picture film, shot on six continents and in 60 countries, the film fol-lows a circuitous route around the world stopping in the best known travel destinations. Since many places were filmed more than once during the course of several decades, the program shows the changes in the world and in photography as well. Destinations as diverse as Hollywood to Hong Kong, Moscow to Brunei, and Tokyo to the Amazon are fea-tured in this very personal film.

Glacier Park and the Canadian RockiesMarch 26 and 27John Holod

Jodie Ginter and John Holod have a magical way of capturing the best and most unique views in places they visit. In this RV travel adventure, they take us over back roads to follow the Great Rocky Moun-tains from Glacier Park, Montana, to Jasper, Alberta. Among the sights: Bowman Lake, Waterton Glacier, Red Rock Canyon, Banff, Kontenay National Park, Takakkaw Falls, grizzly bears, marmot, and surpris-ing shots of birds, boating, and bounteous blooms. You’ll be surprised, enthralled, and really glad you did not miss this one!

All programs held at 7:00 p.m. in Sykes Sudent Union Theatre and each is available Monday or Tuesday. On Tuesdays, a pre-program dinner is available by advance reservation and additional payment.

Each parking lot on the WCU campus is designated for specific permit parking. During special events, how-ever, parking lots immediately adjacent to event venues are available for visitor parking. In addition, there is street parking available throughout the campus. The West Chester Borough owns the parking meters on the WCU campus and monitors them between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. These hours are only for meters located on the WCU campus; other meters in the borough are monitored until 10:00 p.m. weekdays and weekends. Please use the suggested lots on the right, as these are the lots that will not be ticketed during the event. If you are attending a weekday event between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and are unable to find parking in the suggested lot, a Visitor Permit can be issued from the Public Safety Office on South Church Street (labeled PS on the map).

In addition to the surface lots, there are two parking structures on Sharpless and Matlack Streets. The Sharpless parking structure is available for visitors, faculty or students at an hourly rate. The Matlack structure requires a permit, but is available for special event parking at no charge.
