Welcome!Welcome to WCNA 37! This year our journey brings us back to Orlando, where we experienced the magic of recovery at WCNA 19 in 1989. We adapted the WCNA 19 theme this year to “The Magic Is Still Real.” We all know that we recover through REAL work based on

principles we practice in our daily lives, but our ability to recover from the disease of addiction really does

seem magical as we grow and change.

As NA celebrates 65 years, addicts are finding a new way to live in more than 70,000 weekly meetings in 144 countries. NA now speaks 82 languages, with our Basic

Text translated into 30 languages and informational pamphlets to 55 languages. And yet, in many ways,

there is still much to do—so many addicts waiting to hear the message and so much magic waiting for us!

Every time we come together, WCNA offers a chance to celebrate our progress and to be inspired for the road

ahead. As we gather this weekend—recovering addicts from all over the world—our newest book, Guiding Principles: The Spirit of Our Traditions, captures the

essence of the miracles we experience in NA every day:

Magic happens in NA meetings. We hear the music of the message even when we don’t

understand the language in which it is shared.

9:00 pm–10:30 pmSaturday 10:00 am–5:00 pm

WCNA is a registration–required event, so you need your registration badge to enter the OCCC and to participate in most events. Your registration badge gives you access to workshops, main meetings, coffeehouses, and dances. (Registration is not required to participate in marathon meetings and workshops held at the Hyatt Regency Orlando.)

Pre–registration Pickup and Onsite RegistrationIf you pre–registered (before 31 July 2018) or registered online, please have your confirmation email with the registration barcode. You will scan this to complete your registration process. If you do not have your confirmation email, you will be directed to a different line where staff will confirm your registration and check you in. If you did not pre–register or register online, please go to one of the onsite registration counters.

Your Registration Badge Is Valuable—Please Don’t Lose It!We are not responsible for the replacement of lost Convention registration badges; we will not give you another badge if yours is lost or stolen. Please safeguard your badge! There are no refunds on registrations or special events.

Newcomer Packages and HoursLocation: OCCC West Concourse, Level 2, Hall CNewcomer packages will be distributed during the hours that registration is open until we run out.We want to include as many new members as possible by providing newcomer registrations for those with 30 or fewer days clean, including many members from local treatment centers. Newcomer registration packages are available on a first–come, first–served basis for members with fewer than 30 days clean. Our ability to provide newcomer packages is supported by the generosity of members who make newcomer contributions as a part of their registration. The number of packages we can offer is contingent upon the donations received. We are grateful for each of you who choose to give back in this way to “share the magic” with our newest members.

6 REGISTRATION

Children’s Registration BadgesChildren aged 13 and under are eligible for specially-marked children’s badges at no charge, available at the Convention Information Booth (West Concourse Hall C Lobby entrance). Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times during the Convention. Childcare is not provided by WCNA. Children over the age of 13 must have a registration badge to gain access to the convention center and any badge-required activities. In addition, children must have a ticket to enter all ticketed events. We ask for your support and cooperation with the volunteers who are working the doors of events.

Why Is Registration Required?WCNA is an exciting celebration of recovery, and organizing an event on this scale requires detailed advance planning—and lots of resources. We highlight the importance of pre–registration because it is an essential indicator of projected attendance, which helps us plan for adequate space and resources for all attendees. The cost for convention center meeting and event spaces and technologies is vast. With each World Convention, we learn from your suggestions and from our experience to make WCNA even better. We believe in the principle of self–support, and we believe the financial responsibilities for WCNA are shared by all who attend. It’s how we ensure that this event is a gift of hope, and not a financial burden on the Fellowship as a whole. Recovery meetings and workshops at the Hyatt Regency Orlando are the only WCNA activities open to members who are not registered.

REGISTRATION 7

What Your WCNA Registration Pays ForThe World Convention of Narcotics Anonymous is a unique celebration of recovery that truly belongs to our worldwide Fellowship. As of the time of printing of this program, members from 59 countries and territories were registered. We strive to create an event that is both welcoming to all and responsible with Fellowship funds, but the space we enjoy and the resources we use—from meeting rooms to historical displays, to equipment, and services and the halls we fill with hugs and laughter—all cost a great deal of money. While the cost to register for a World Convention may seem high, registration fees alone don’t even cover the total costs. The difference is made up through merchandise sales and ticketed events revenue.

We are often asked why registration for WCNA costs more than most area and regional conventions. One of the key differences is that WCNA requires the use of a major convention center and several hotels, while most area and regional events are held in a single hotel or hall. The costs at these facilities for set–up, service, and equipment; and the size and scope of our audiovisual, translations, and accessibility services are unlike even the largest local events.

And why are we telling you all of this? Because we want you to understand that the cost of registration is priced as it is because the cost of putting on the Convention is indeed high. It would be irresponsible to spend the Fellowship’s funds on costs for those who choose not to register.

Nar–Anon Location: OCCC West Concourse Rooms W202–W204In the spirit of cooperation, not affiliation, WCNA 37 provides space for Nar–Anon to hold its world convention meetings and activities throughout the weekend. The Nar–Anon registration table and meeting and workshop rooms are located near rooms W202–W204. Nar–Anon members who wish to attend WCNA coffee house events, dances, workshops, and main meetings must register for and wear a WCNA badge.

Media Statement As our Eleventh Tradition says, “Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films.” The primary purpose of our PR effort is to tell the story of Narcotics Anonymous and what our program offers so that we may better reach the still–suffering addict. We do not disclose our last names in the media as identifiable members of Narcotics Anonymous. If members of the media approach you, please direct them to the Convention Information Booth located near the West Concourse Hall C Lobby entrance.

Photos, Videos, and Social MediaWe recognize that it is a common practice for members to take photos and videos at NA events and post them on social media networks. We do not believe this to be in conflict with our Traditions as long as the photos and videos

are not made available to the general public and people in the photos have consented to the posting. Please be considerate of our guiding principles and the anonymity of others as you take and share photos and videos. For more information, please see the service pamphlet Social Media and Our Guiding Principles.

Let’s Walk Our TalkThe World Convention is a time of great joy and celebration. We are grateful to the city of Orlando for graciously welcoming tens of thousands of recovering addicts this weekend. However, WCNA’s massive attendance presents a challenge: Our behavior affects others and reflects upon NA as a whole. Please monitor your own behavior, and keep an eye on others, too. Our Basic Text, Narcotics Anonymous, suggests that “we are each other’s eyes and ears. When we do something wrong, our fellow addicts help us by showing us what we cannot see.” After all, we can easily lose track of how our excitement might be affecting others.

The public forms an opinion of NA based upon what they see and hear from our members. Every one of us is a member of the PR committee this weekend, everywhere we go. We ask that we all gently and lovingly remind each other that our individual behavior, good or bad, reflects on NA as a whole. The NA World Board, NAWS staff, and WCNA 37 Workgroup members will be assisting us to maintain an atmosphere of recovery throughout the weekend.

PROGRAM AND MEETING INFOThe Magic Is Still RealWCNA 37 officially opens at the OCCC with meetings beginning at 8:30 am on Thursday (with two pre–WCNA speaker meetings Wednesday night at the Hyatt). Whether you love music, dancing, recovery, or service (or all of these!), you have more than 80 workshops, 7 main meetings, 6 World Board Forums, 8 Keep Giving Back Workshops (service–oriented), and 4 Public Relations Forums to choose from. Excerpts from a wide range of our NA literature inspire all of the workshops. We hope every attendee experiences the magic of recovery throughout the weekend.

Speaker and Chairperson Check–inUpon arrival at the Convention, all workshop speakers and chairpersons should check in as soon as possible at the Program Desk near the Convention Information Booth located near the entrance to the West Concourse Hall C Lobby. In addition, all speakers and chairpersons should report to their respective meeting rooms at least 15 minutes before the start of their scheduled meeting or workshop.

Marathon MeetingsTwenty–four–hour marathon meetings will be held at the Hyatt Plaza Ballroom beginning at 10:00 pm on Wednesday and ending at 10:00 am on Sunday. Marathon meetings are closed meetings, open only to addicts or those who think they may be addicts. To volunteer to chair a meeting,

please sign up at the Program Desk near the Convention Information Booth at the West Concourse Hall C Lobby entrance.

Main MeetingsOur main meetings are the heart of WCNA, with members from all over the world sharing the NA message—and we have one every night starting on Wednesday with two back–to–back speaker meetings (at the Hyatt Plaza Ballroom). Thursday night we’ll gather in the OCCC for our main meeting and to explore the world of WCNA 37 with a geographic roll call, so get with your fellows to shout out loud to represent your NA community. Friday night, the Membership Survey will be distributed and collected before the meeting begins. Saturday night’s main meeting will feature a panel of members—and the cleantime countdown will have the whole room on its feet! We expect 22,000+ addicts at the Saturday night meeting and thousands more listening in via live internet stream, so we will have an enormous closing circle!

Sunday morning, we’ll celebrate NA World Unity Day. We are excited that members all over the world will be able to

join us via a live internet audio stream. And, for the first time in WCNA history, a video feed with interpreters for the hard of hearing will be available to all participating correctional institutions.

If you have read the rest of this program, you know that registration alone doesn’t cover the cost of putting on a World Convention. The Seventh Tradition collection we take during the Sunday morning meeting helps us meet our obligations in Orlando—and around the world—as NA continues to carry the message. Thank you for contributing.

Workshops and ForumsCOMMON NEEDS MEETINGSIn the spirit of unity, WCNA 37 continues the practice of providing workshops and meetings to help members connect with others who share specific common needs. These include young people’s meetings; gay and lesbian (LGBTQ) meetings; men’s and women’s meetings; and meetings on physical pain, illness, and relationships. Trying different ways to address issues specific to some of our members can help us see that each of us has a home and a place to recover in Narcotics Anonymous.

FLASH GROUPSIn Flash Groups, members sit at tables

with others from around the world that they may not know yet, and

each table holds their own recovery meeting based on

a reading from NA literature.

24 PROGRAM AND MEETING INFO

JUST FOR TODAY OPEN PODIUMEach morning members have the chance to participate in an open podium meeting. Arrive early to get on the list of members who want to share during the meeting, and to complete the necessary copyright release form.

KEEP GIVING BACK WORKSHOPSFor the first time in WCNA history, we have a series of member–led interactive service workshops we’re calling the Keep Giving Back track. These sessions include Being a GSR; Planning for Service Bodies: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; BMLT: Unifying Meeting List Information and Beyond; Contract Negotiations for NA Conventions and Events; Virtual Recovery; Consensus–Based Decision Making; Each Other’s Eyes and Ears: Expanding Access to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing; and Serving NA in Rural & Isolated Communities.

PUBLIC RELATIONS CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSIONAL FORUMThe Criminal Justice Forum will include a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation representative who helps make it possible for 100 state correctional institutions to join in the Unity Day meeting and Orlando Police Department captain who has a cooperative relationship with the Orlando ASC PR Subcommittee. We’ll also welcome a Georgia Department of Corrections representative who sees value in NA meetings for inmates, and a Florida state senator who sits on two Florida state senate committees: Substance Abuse and Criminal Justice. Following this presentation, there will be a facilitated

discussion with these panelists whose professions affect the lives of addicts. They are giving us their service; let us welcome and support them. Please note: This panel is an opportunity to hear the perspective of these professionals directly, and is not intended to express the view of NA World Services or the Narcotics Anonymous Fellowship.

ADDITIONAL PR FORUMSOur other three PR forums provide insights and ideas, and inspire discussion about topics relevant to PR service. We’ll cover Misconceptions About NA; Sponsorship/Step Working Behind the Walls, H&I Service; and Experience, Strength, and Hope: NA Members and Medication–Assisted Treatment (MAT).

WORLD BOARD FORUMSThe World Board invites you to participate in six interactive and informative sessions. We’ll hold an open forum as an opportunity for all of us to talk about what the World Board does and to hear and discuss your comments and questions. Three sessions are focused on our current Issue Discussion Topics: Carrying the Message and Making NA Attractive, Medication–Assisted Treatment and the NA Member, and Attracting Members to Service. We’ll also delve into the current literature projects—the Mental Health/Mental Illness IP and the Spiritual–Principle–a–Day Book—to provide background information and updates, and to hear your ideas and input on these pieces. We look forward to seeing you!

Thank You!We are so grateful for each member who is able to

join us for this celebration, and for the members “back home” who keep the doors open and the meetings

full around the world, this weekend and every day of every year. We know that the freedom we celebrate today is rooted in the commitments we keep, in our

home groups and in our lives. Our warmest thanks go to the members and groups in the Greater Orlando Area Service Committee, the regions nearby whose members helped make the WCNA 37 Workgroup a success—and to all of you who so generously and

selflessly offered your time and service to make this World Convention possible. Our gratitude speaks in

the Orange County Convention Center, but also in the quiet voice of one addict helping another, offering a

message of hope in a smile of recognition. These are the moments that make this gathering magical—for

our Fellowship and for each one of us. Thank you.

You’re Invited! We would like to extend to you an invitation to the

next World Convention: WCNA 38 in September 2021 in Melbourne, Australia! We’ll share more information as

soon as we can. We hope to see you in Melbourne!
