WCCI 15th World Conference: Educating for Peace and Harmony with the Earth and Ourselves- A Success
Jessica Kimmel, EdD. Chairperson, Conference Program University of Incarnate Word San Antonio, Texas, USA
What a beautiful city! Kaohsiung, Taiwan welcomed the members and guests of the WCCI 15th International Conference with open arms, flowers, song, hospitality, and gracious hosting. We were all impressed with the balmy weather, the flowering trees, and the courteous treatment to all our guests. The theme of the conference, Educating for Peace and Harmony with the Earth and Ourselves, inspired our members to have presentations on natural resources, culture and the arts, human rights, gender, global education, spirituality, and peace education. We received over 150 papers and selected over 100 from 17 countries across the world. It was challenging task, but the program was, indeed, thoughtful, intellectually stimulating, and represented an overview of the research and work done by our many members.

REFLECTION UPON THE CONFERENCE
Shu Zhen Liu Foreign Language School, University of Electronic Science and Technology Chengdu, Sichuan, China
First of all, I’d like to congratulate the organizers of the WCCI 15
th World Conference in Education that
was held successfully in Kaohsiung. It was a grand gathering of educators from all over the world, at which people actively shared thoughts and concepts in education, research findings and their educational experiences. I was glad to see that in order to meet different interests and needs, the conference agenda adopted different formats—general sessions, a large number of concurrent sessions, workshops and interest groups meetings, and workshops.
What is worth mentioning is that various cultural activities were organized, such as a cultural bazaar, field trips, cultural tours, traditional music dance and art, and an international banquet. These activities not only offered opportunities for the participants to cooperate and acquire mutual understanding, but also enhanced their multicultural consciousness. As the globe shrinks, cross-cultural and multi-cultural awareness are becoming indispensable for educators. In terms of curriculum and instruction, only when educators have global cultural and academic visions will be possible to facilitate and promote effective teaching full of cultural and intellectual enlightenment.
At the final banquet it occurred to me that since SIG members have gotten to know each other during the conference, it might be a good idea for SIGs to sit together at the banquet. This would give them time to strengthen their friendships and share more about their common interests and experiences. □
REFLECTION ON THE CONFERENCE
Arlyne Marasigan University of the Philippines WCCI Philippine Chapter, member Quezon City, Philippines
The 15
th Biennial WCCI International Conference in
Kaohsiung, Taiwan was a very remarkable and unforgettable experience for me as a new member of the organization. Once again, it was proven that the worth of an educator cannot be measured with the length of time as a member of the educational organizational or institution instead through unselfish and valuable sharing of expertise and services that he or she was able to offer to the organization and to the community where an individual belongs. The mission and vision of the WCCI and the person-to-person relationship were very evident regardless of nationality, race, color, gender and even language. All these identities of the individual serve not as a hindrance to promote peace and unity among people. Truly there is UNITY in DIVERSITY. □ Marvita Gowdy Doctoral Student Alliant International University Fresno, California, USA
Out of the entire conference, the International Banquet and Cultural Night was the most memorable of all occasions. This was a night when all cultures came together for a celebratory ceremony fit for a king. Attire from all around the world was exhibited, and delicious cuisine was served as we enjoyed the entertainment. All cultures embraced as we danced, sang, and rejoiced in happiness together. It was a sight well worth seeing. I give my sincere, heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated coordinator Dr. Vincent Shieh. Vincent, together with his support group, has enlightened all attendance. I felt enmeshed in the culture, love and peace. I will forever cherish the fond memories and friendships from this conference. A special thank you is extended to all involved in this spectacular event. I especially thank the youth for making themselves available to us as we toured their land. Last but not least, I thank Dr. Matriano and Carole for extending the invitation. I encourage others to participate in multicultural activities of this nature, as it was truly a great experience. □

Another CSW event in which WCCI collaborated with many other NGOs was the March 9th Symposium entitled “Avenues to Accountability” which explored crimes of sex trafficking and the possibilities for holding traffickers legally accountable. This symposium made possible by Fordham Law School who provided a beautiful auditorium and the Biosophical Society who provided funding for the promo flyers, programs, audio-visual services and refreshments. Betty opened and closed the program with thanks to Biosophical and Fordham and the collaborating NGO organizers. A more detailed report on this symposium is on the website of the International Institute on Peace Education.
Jessica concentrated on programs involving issues related to Asian and African women. Related news will be published at the WCCI website. □

WCCI’S PARTICIPATION IN THE 57TH
UN COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF
WOMEN - MARCH 4-15, 2013
Betty Reardon, PhD. WCCI UN Representative Director Emeritus, International Institute of Peace Education (IIPE) New York, New York, USA
Every spring for nearly six decades the United Nations has convened the Commission on the Status of Women. The Commission assesses the global situation of women, focusing particularly on member states’ achievements in fulfilling UN policies and standards, adopted to advance women’s equality, a founding principle of the world organization. The 2013 theme for the interstate discussions and the parallel NGO sessions carried on at and around the UN headquarters in New York was “Violence against Women.” WCCI was represented in the NGO sessions and events by Jessica Kimmel of Incarnate Word University and Betty Reardon of the International Institute on Peace Education. Betty focused on programs organized by peace organizations intended to illuminate the violence women suffer as a consequence of war and armed conflict and achievements and needs in the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (http://www.un.org/events/res_1325e.pdf). She presented on two panels one on the economic violence women suffer as a result of the resource wars that plague many world areas; the other on sexual violence frequently perpetrated by fellow soldiers against women service members. These panels were collaboratively organized by other NGOs with which WCCI is building cooperative relationships as the organization takes up a more active role in the global civil society represented in the United Nations affiliated NGO community. These organizations were the Global Network of Women Peace builders, United Methodist Women and Voice of Women Canada.
In both cases she referred to the systemic nature of military violence against women as it is described in a statement (http://www.i-i-p-e.org/csw) that was addressed to the CSW and is still being circulated for additional endorsements which will later be presented to UN Women in the observation of the installation later this year of the new Under Secretary General will

The keynote speech of Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury (USA/Bangladesh) Educating for Sustainable Culture of Peace: A Global Responsibility” and a response from Betty Reardon (USA) as an opening speech provided a thought provoking springboard for the conference; the General Session 2 is a UN Panel Presentation. The topic of discussion is focused on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW55). They are the WCCI delegates who attended the CSW in New York City. They were: Vincent Shieh, Angela Lo (Kaohsiung, Taiwan), Nicky de Leon (WCCI Intern) (USA) and Betty Reardon (USA). The third General Session was the Presidential Address/Alice Miel Lecture of Ismail Mirici (Turkey), WCCI President, “Facing the Challenges for Balancing the Care for Mother Earth and the Human Family” and a Response from Larry Hufford, (USA) was a fitting tribute to Alice Miel, WCCI Founder and also demonstrated the dedication of WCCI to Educating Peace and Harmony with the Earth and Ourselves.
The strongest asset of the WCCI is, indeed, our cross cultural representation and our focus on the inter-action of those many cultures toward a concept of peace in our world. Representatives from national and regional chapters reported on the innovative and substantive work from many different areas of our planet. The papers included discussions on teaching, engaging the human spirit in healing, water rights and environmental justice, experiential learning about the environment, students’ thinking about human rights, forgiveness, science education, relation-building among women, family ethics, disaster education, and diversity, along with many others. Conference a success… continued from page 5
The advantage of a conference like this is to support dialogue and discussion among the participants; that we surely did! The hotel provided a venue that encouraged small and large group discussions and they were much in evidence! We talked and talked and then talked some more, at breakfast, on the tour buses, and at dinner. The venue for the conference offered many opportunities to travel locally: to the Buddhist Temple and Meditation Center, to the historic district of Taiwan (where we saw the original design of the fabric that served as the color background for all the programs, posters, signs, and nametags), for a tour of the Taiwan Disaster area and the remarkable environmental recovery made in the area, to the local lake and its museums, and to the bustling manufacturing centers of Kaohsiung. Some conference participants even took advantage of the excellent train system and went to Taipei! All in all, our 15
th International Conference helped
each of us to know and understand the settlement and history of Taiwan, to appreciate the wonderful weather, and to have a dialogue among many different cultures. We thank the WCCI Taiwan Chapter for opening its arms to all of us, and our admiration of Taiwan has surely been supported by this visit. □
IMPRESSION
Nieves M. Medina, EdD. Participant, WCCI 2012 Director, Research Office Dean, College of Arts, Sciences and Education St. Paul University Manila PHILIPPINES
Earnest greetings, confident smiles and warm and strong handshakes started the 7-day WCCI 15th World Conference 2012, the 4th Biennial of the 42- year old professional organization. Quoting from the message of the WCCI Executive Director, Dr. Estela C. Matriano, and I quote: “We celebrate a reunion of our WCCI family ... a celebration of renewing the ties of friendship and valuing relationships among WCCI’s brothers and sisters across the globe... She puts premium on ....becoming truly family oriented members of the organization is our main purpose for being.”
On behalf of our beloved institution, St. Paul University Manila and delegates from other universities of St Paul University System, we were delighted and enlightened with the transfer of learning experienced from WCCI 2012 15th World Conference. Indeed, it is a forum filled with intellectual sharing coming from education theorists and practitioners around the globe. There were 97 paper presentations of the different research educator-enthusiasts from the 13 participating countries. More than the paper presentations were the 10 Special Interest Groups namely: Culture Arts and Language; Community Development; Early Childhood Education; Environmental Concerns; Ethics and Values; Global Education; Media and Technology; Lifelong Learning; Peace Education; and Woman and Education with designated relevant issues/ concerns that they have to brainstorm and to come –up with resolutions that will help address current situations.
Taiwan is a peace loving country, a country of value laden people with great respect to their historical culture and beginnings as evidenced by the relics displayed in the different museums visited by the delegates.
The groups were successful at arriving at doable/feasible suggestions and recommendations and took pride in sharing them as resolutions to the entire WCCI members comprising the assembly.

Furthermore, what made the gathering instilling was the fieldtrips to the villages once devastated by calamities like land fall among others of which to date are beautiful houses. Taiwan Government Support, is GREAT and very palpable. Utmost respect is due to the Mayor of Kaohsiung City, Hon. Chen Chu. In fine, Taiwan is a peace loving country, a country of value laden people with great respect to their historical culture and beginnings as evidenced by the relics displayed in the difference museums visited by the delegates. More so, the villagers were so hospitable. Their assertive greetings and warm welcome were heartfelt and the food they served was sumptuous. As a general comment, Dr. Vincent Shieh, Coordinator of the conference and former WCCI President 2009-2011 and Dr. Victor Der-Long Fang, President, WCCI, Taiwan Chapter, who then guided the groups in the visit to the villages are wonderful persons. The conference was indeed memorable! Equal appreciation is expressed to the 97 paper presenters who unquestionably did well their home works. Colleagues, good job!
Consequently, more than the cognitive aspects, the 7-day WCCI International Conference was an epitome of family relationships, mission, commitment and passion. The founders of WCCI, education theorists and practitioners who started the organization maintained the organization through the years and tried their very best to continue the message of PEACE EDUCATION through authentic sharing of values and experiences by passionate people around the world. Finally, to the organizers of WCCI 15th World Conference 2012, to Dr. Estela C. WCCI Turkish Chapter 1st
International Conference on Education was held in Baskent University, the first and one of the most prestigious private foundation universities in Ankara. The theme of the conference was “The Role and Importance of Teacher Education on Creating a Global Culture of Peace and Environmental Awareness.”
There were 56 paper presentations and nearly 100 participants both from all around Turkey, United States and Albenia. It has been a good opportunity and an effective avenue to introduce WCCI to the participants, academicians, educational scientists and directors of the universities but also to gain new members. Another distinguishing point of the conference was the quality of the research papers that have been presented. The selected and refereed papers of the conference will be published in a National peer reviewed and refereed journal.
As WCCI Turkish Chapter, we have identified our aims and purposes as follows:
To increase the number of our members;
To increase the number of student members;
To work on our web site;
To have an online Chapter journal on Education;
To continue having Chapter conferences in different cities and universities of our country;
To arrange meetings and presentations at the universities, starting with Ankara, the city of best state and foundation universities in Turkey, in order to introduce WCCI.
We have started to work for the 2nd
International WCCI Turkish Chapter Conference on Education right after the conference and planning to organize it in accordance with TED University. TED University is another young foundation university which has a strong Faculty of Education with distinguishing educational scientists. We have also started to work on the separate session for student members of WCCI present their papers or posters. I believe the 2
nd conference will be another
and more successful one in terms of the number of participants and the quality of the papers and the organization. Continue on the next column →
Meanwhile, I would like to announce that our colleagues from all chapters and the Executive Board of the WCCI International are invited to the conference. It would be a great pleasure for WCCI Turkish Chapter to have you with us again in Turkey. □
