GAYLORD The visiting
Hornets of Pellston scrapped
and clawed and battled but
could not produce a lot of
points against a tough St.
Mary defense on Thursday.
The Snowbirds used a bal-
anced scoring assault to
complement their aggressive
defense as they posted an
impressive 71-45 victory to
start the New Year off on the
right foot.
St. Mary improved to 4-2
overall and 2-2 in the league
and Pellston slipped to 1-4
and 1-2.
We kept St. Marys at bay
for one period, reported vet-
eran Pellston coach Cliff
Hass, who lost a ton of talent
to graduation. Good defense
on St. Marys part and bal-
anced scoring was too much.
They forced a lot of
turnovers.St. Mary trailed 17-15 after
the first quarter but broke
things open in the second
quarter with suffocating
defense. The Snowbirds
eventually took a 38-22 lead
into the locker room.
The cool hand of Carmen
Juneac paced the St. Mary
scoring ledger as he made
the twine twitch to the tune
of 17 points. He also grabbed
seven caroms and covered
the floor like wall-to-wall car-
peting on defense, recording
four steals.
There were four Snowbirds
in double-digit scoring in the
contest. Senior guard Matt
Spyhalski spanked the nets
for 16 points to go with five
assists while junior forward
Charles Strehl struck for 14
and played tall inside, haul-
ing down nine rebounds, and
scrap-iron tough Nick
Lochinski launched 12 and
had four steals.
Shifty senior guard Jake
Friedenstab fired in a game-
high 22 points for Pellston,
including 10 in the first quar-
ter as the Hornets assumed
the lead. The versatile
Friedenstab also hauled in
six rebounds and served up
his teammates with somesweet deliveries, notching
four assists.
Tall Tanner Keller was a
physical presence inside for
the Hornets, accounting for
15 points and pulling down
seven caroms.
St. Mary continued league
play on Thursday, Jan. 10,
with a big one at Bellaire. On
Tuesday, Jan. 15, the
Snowbirds play host to SVC
foe Mancelona and on
Thursday, Jan. 17, they are
home against another league
rival, Inland Lakes.
The Hornets played at home on Tuesday, Jan. 8, against SVC rival Central
Lake and they are also home
this Friday, Jan. 11, against
Onaway and Tuesday, Jan. 15,
against Bellaire.

ONAWAY Wow! This is
getting pretty exciting for the
Onaway boys.
The Cardinals of coach
Eddy Szmoniak pushed their
record to a sterling 5-0 with a
bruising 58-48 victory over
hardworking Ski Valley foe
Inland Lakes on Thursday,
Jan. 3.
Junior playmaker Joe
OBradovich, who is having a
monster season so far, sank
some clutch buckets in the
late going to help the host
Cardinals to create a little
separation on the scoreboard
and ultimately secure the
hard-fought win.
Onaway is 5-0 for the first
time since the Dead Sea was
just sick, to coin an expres-
sion. Its just another way of
saying its been a long time.
The cruising Cardinals took
their unblemished record
into the league game at
Mancelona on Tuesday, Jan. 8
(after this issue went to
press).
I-Lakes battled for 32 min-
utes and made a game of it.
The game was tied at 21 at
the half and the Bulldogs
trailed by just a point, 49-48,
late in the contest when the
deadly OBradovich began
dialing in with his lethal
jumpers to help the Cards
keep the Bulldogs at arms
length the rest of the way.
Fellow junior forward
Chris Cave Man Cleaver
came off the bench and
played like an animal in the
assessment of coach
Szymoniak. Cleaver also
delivered some key buckets
down the stretch, scoring
four of his six points late in
the game.
OBradovich rang up 18
points to pace the victors and
the cool hand of junior
Carlos Bautista accounted
for 13 points. Andrew Prow,
another of Onaways talentedjuniors, was poison from 3-
point land, making the twine
jump four times as he scored
all 12 of his points from
downtown.
Todd Athey paced the
hardworking, hustling
Bulldogs with 19 points and
he also pulled down 10
boards for a double-double.
Senior Richard Armbruster
battled under the boards to
pull down a game-high 14
rebounds for I-Lakes and he
also scored five. Senior
guards Dakotah Davedowski
and Cody Bonilla each put six
on the board and Nick
Howery hit for five with eight
boards for I-Lakes, which is
much better than its 0-4
record indicates.
The Bulldogs sought their
first win on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at
the court of league foe Forest
Area.

SAULT STE. MARIE The
Petoskey girls didnt exhibit
a whole lot of rust after the
long Christmas break,
storming to an early lead at
Sault Ste. Marie on
Wednesday, Jan. 2, and
maintaining that advantage
en route to an impressive
69-45 triumph.
The Northmen of coach
Adam Dobrowolsk i, who
improved to 5-2 overall with
the win, led 21-8 after the
first quarter and 43-16 at thehalf.
Seniors Kelsey Ance and
Megan Tompkins were a for-
midable 1-2 punch for
Dobrowolskis troops once
again. Cool Hand Kelsey
continued her assault on the
enemy iron this season,
taming the twine to the tune
of a game-high 28 points
from her wing post. Ance
was no wallflower under the
boards, either, battling to a
team-high 14 rebounds for
an impressive double-dou-
ble. She was big into rejec-
tion, too, recording four
blocked shots.
The 6-foot-3 Tompkins
also cast a long shadow
down low, generating 14
points and five boards and
she dished off three assists
as well.
Kati Lewis also helped the
cause, launching sevenpoints. Hannah Scholten
and Alyssa VanWerden, who
was battling illness, each hit
for five and Liz Fraser found
the bottom of the net for
four points and was typically
effective handling the ball
and controlling the tempo.
Jessica Parmer put up 12
points to lead the Blue
Devils (4-4).
The Sysko Kid showed
up big for the Petoskey JV in
a tense 40-37 loss to the
Sault. Megan Sysko struck
for 10 points and grabbed
eight boards and Lily
Kingma crowned the iron for
nine points.
Jenny Tompkins and
Sydney Lesperance each
landed four points through
the rim for the Petoskey
freshmen, who lost a tough
one to the Sault, 44-15.
Petoskey (5-2, 1-1)
returned to Big North action
on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at home
against T.C. West. On Friday,
Jan. 11, the Northmen play
at the court of league foe
Ogemaw Heights and on
Friday, Jan. 18, they are on
the road against Alpena.

JOHANNESBURG A long
three-week layoff did not
seem to hinder the
Johannesburg-L ewiston
girls on the home floor
Monday night. The surging
Cardinals of coach Heather
Huff picked up right where
they left off, steamrolling to
a 7-0 record and 5-0 in the
Ski Valley with a 69-22 deci-
sion over Central Lake in a
game that was razor close
right up to the tip-off.
Hard to believe it was thefirst actual court action for
the Cardinals since their way
at Bellaire way back on
December 18.
It was storming senior
wing Acetylene Abby
Schlicher stoking the fires of
victory once again. Abby
torched the nets for 14
points and very nearly
recorded a rare triple-dou-
ble, adding nine assists and
nine steals to her stat line.
When she wasnt taking the
ball away from the Trojans,
hitting for two points or
passing for two points, Abby
was grabbing six rebounds.
Junior guard Brittany
Cherwinski was also hot
from the floor, making the
twine dance to the tune of a
game-high 15 points. She
also helped put the P in
Pressure for the suffocating
Cardinal defense of coachHuff, recording four steals.
Long-armed freshman
post Maddie Showerman
soaked the nets for 12 points
to join her teammates in
double digits.
Senior Hannah Huff
puffed the scoreboard with
her 10 points of offense in
addition to being a physical
presence down low, grab-
bing five boards. Katelyn
Weaver corralled a game-
high 10 rebounds and made
four steals.
Haley Bearden and
Lauren Rogers each scored
five to pace the visiting
Trojans.
The Cardinals played at
Inland Lakes on Wednesday,
Jan. 9, after this issue went to
press. On Friday, Jan. 11, the
Cardinals are home again
against Mancelona and on
Monday, Jan.14, they play atMio in a make-up game.
On Wednesday, Jan. 16, J-L
is home against talented
league foe Onaway and
Tuesday, Jan. 22, is the one
everybody is anticipating,
the rematch at Gaylord St.
Mary in the annual Rivals
Rally for the Cure contest.

GRAYLING The Grayling
girls varsity basketball team
simply couldnt recover froma second-quarter blitz by vis-
iting Kalkaska on Friday, Jan.
4, falling 62-42 to the Blazers
in a Lake Michigan
Conference matchup.
The host Vikings trailed by
just three points, 15-12, after
the first period. But, Kalkaska
put the game out of reach
quickly in the second with a
27-8 outburst. That gave the
Blazers a robust 42-20 advan-
tage at the half, a lead
Grayling couldnt overcome.
The game started out as a
very close game, said
Grayling head coach Joe
Powers, whose team is now
5-2 overall. The second
stanza was the entire game,
as both teams were practical-
ly even the rest of the way.
Much of the damage in the
second quarter was done by
Kalkaska senior co-captain
Tabitha Kibby, who lead the
Lady Blazers (2-1 overall)
with a game-high 27 points.
The second quarter was
all Tabitha Kibby, Powers
said. She made four 3s, two
2s and was 3-for-3 from the
(free throw) line, scoring 19
points in the quarter.
She was on fire, going 7-
of-8 in the quarter and even
making one trey off the
glass.Both teams shot 40 percent
on the night. The difference
was that Kalkaska put up 52
attempts in earning the win,
while Grayling cagers had
just 40 shots.
The Vikings were also hurt
by 30 turnovers, compared to
just 14 by the Blazers.
Kalkaska also recorded 18
steals.
Grayling, however, did win
the battle of the boards, out-
rebounding Kalkaska, 35 to
25.
Senior guard Caitlin
Prosser was the only Viking
to score in double figures
with 10 points, 7 rebounds 2
steals and 1 assist in the loss.
And, sophomo re forward
Samantha Denno ripped
down a team-high 10
rebounds to go with her 4
points and 1 blocked shot.
Other contributors in the
LMC clash for Grayling
included: Hailey Whittaker
with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 3
assists and 1 steal; Hannah
Haven with 6 points, 3
rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal;
Maddie Benardo with 4
points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal
and 1 assist; Tandy Mitchell
with 4 points, 1 board, 1 steal
and 1 assist; Makayla Cragg
with 3 points, 2 boards and 1
assist; Alyssa Morley with 2
points, 2 rebounds and 1
assist; Rachel Money with 3
rebounds, 2 steals and 1
assist; Cierra Prosser with 2
rebounds, 2 steals and 1
blocked shot; and Hailey
Petty with 1 rebound.

Compliments of Ed Wohlfiel
According to AVID Ratings
Co., some of the must-have
amenities in a new house are
home offices and green fea-

Home buyers are willing to
give up devoted space to home
theaters and other specialized
media rooms in order to have a
home office. In fact, theyd be
willing to forego a formal di n-

have a home office or study.
And they want energy-effi-

windows and insulation.
Other desirable features are
large kitchens with an island,

arent necessarily important to
all buyers.
