The Importance of Strategy
• The idea of “Just Do It” doesn’t really work here
• Biodiversity informa7cs is an enormously complex field, so if you “just do it,” you will not know where to start, where to invest the most 7me, what partnerships to build, etc.
• Rather, one has to construct a detailed, well-‐thought-‐out path to achieving one’s goals

Assess Needs
• A biodiversity informa7cs ins7tu7on must repond to real and present need in the community to which it will aSend
• Don’t be a hammer looking for something to nail down…
• What IS the ‘user’ community? – Government, conserva7on NGOs, academia
• What does that user community need? – Data, processed informa7on, standards, data management, publicity, funds
Achievable Goals
• Speak to a limited set of goals ini7ally • Choose those goals such that the ins7tu7on fulfills specific needs in the user community
• Sa7sfy the users via close aSen7on to their needs
• Become indispensable to a community, however small and limited it may be
• All this with an eye to extension, scaling, building, and growing
No Smoke and Mirrors
• Avoid the trap of holding data or informa7on back
• Opening informa7on/data = power and u7lity and importance
• Focus on serving real data and concrete, well-‐documented informa7on
