Ways to positively face disruptive behaviour
Define clear classroom expectations
• Make good use of the first class:– Opportunity for both teacher and pupils for
communicating expectations for classroom conventions such as arriving, leaving and talking in class.
– Establish non-verbal behaviour by the teacher. Example : • Teacher raise both her hands as a sign for pupils to get back to their sit.
• Let pupils participate in setting classroom rules– Let pupils decide or give them choices.– Example : A teacher might tell students she cannot
tolerate pupils talking during his lessons, but can accept with pupils drinking water. \
– Example : The pupils who finish their work early can play language games at the back of the class without making noise.
Get to the roots of why each individual is acting in such a way
• Usually they are searching for attention. • You must find a way to make sure the student
can get attention for positive behavior. • Poor behavior should get either no attention
or the kind of attention that is so negative the student won't want it.
Maintain pupils interest
• Make the subject relevant to the learner. Whenever you introduce a new topic or activity, explain to the pupils why they are learning it and how it is relevant to their lives.• Use interactive techniques such as discussion, simulations, games, and group activities.• Encourage questions and participation from your students.• Vary the use of media and materials in the classroom. Use cartoons, videotapes, handouts, slides, PowerPoint, internet, and multimedia presentations.
Handle problems in the least severe way first
• Stop your lesson and establish eye contact with the student to let they know that they has interrupted the class.
• If the behavior recurs, stop the lesson again but don not take too much time dealing with miebehaviour pupils.
