Hosted by Gauteng Province, the championship took place over two days and is the flagship event for Bodybuilding South Africa for the year. An estimated 330 competitors from all over South Africa participated; with athletes from all regions and districts across the country converging at the Emperors Resort and Casino to compete for the opportunity to qualify to represent South Africa at IFBB International World Championship events. The championship was preceded by three informative workshops for IFBB officials which took place on the Thursday. These included the national judges’ workshop, a statistician-focused workshop and a backstage management workshop. The workshops were followed by the Annual General Meeting, which was attended by the National Executive members and all Provincial Chairpersons. Athlete registration took place on the Friday, with competitors being split into two groups, with the first session taking place in the morning for Group A and the second session taking place in the afternoon for Group B. A new development for the event this year was the addition of the anti-doping seminar which also took place on Friday. The seminar was hosted by IFBB South Africa doctor, Dr Riaan Barnard, with Dr Aadil Khan as guest speaker. The seminar was open to all athletes, coaches and family members, and covered a wide range of important information pertaining to anti-doping rules and regulations, as well as protocols around athlete testing. As a member of SASCOC, Bodybuilding South Africa is bound by the anti-doping rules and regulations of SAIDS. Each day of the championships began with the impressive parade of provinces, a tradition which was started in 2018 and continued this year. All athletes from each district and province competing for the day, along with the respective team managers, were brought to the stage. Teams were dressed in their official province or district clothing, which made for a colourful display of competitors and officials. The National Anthem was then played – a wonderful symbol of unity and national pride. A number of special awards were awarded including: Soulby Jackson - Special Service Provider award for Loyalty and Integrity, Lente Rautenbach - Special Service Provider award for Loyalty and Integrity, Dr Riaan Barnard - President’s Award for distinguished Service. It was a weekend of bodybuilding excellence, with an incredible array of bodybuilding talent on show. Sponsors of the event included: Designer Lighting, Slater Gym Group, Diesel Bros, Osman’s Optical, Muscle Meds, Supplement Discounter, Acidi-Qure Water. Team Gauteng made up of the 5 provincial districts of Gauteng North, Gauteng Central, Ekurhuleni, West Rand and Sedibeng were awarded the winning team trophy. Five teams of athletes were selected to represent South Africa at a number of IFBB International World Championships, including: IFBB Men’s World Championships (Fujairah, UAE, 5 – 10 November) IFBB Fit Model World Championships (Riga, Latvia, 16 – 18 November) IFBB World Junior Championships (Budabest, Hungary, 22 – 24 November) IFBB World Fitness Championship (Bratislava, Slovakia, 29 November – 1 December) IFBB World Masters Championship (Tarragona, Spain, 6 – 8 December) The Fit Model is a new category recently launched by IFBB International, so the team of ladies competing at this event will be the first-ever South Africans to do so. 2019 IFBB SOUTH AFRICA BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The annual IFBB South Africa national championships took place this year from 12 – 15 September at the Emperors Resort and Casino, Sedibeng.
