    Motionless Floating.

This useful feature of swimming is so seldom accomplished, or even practiced by

the majority of swimmers, thatl dqubt whether they realize its usefulness; or, perhaps,

they coincide with that misleading theory, "That only certain persons can float." I

venture to say that not above five per wit. of swim~ers ever learn it properly, and that

ninety per cent. could do so if they carried out the proper method and gave it some little

attention. My experience is tha't in no case is it an impossibility to learn. Stout per-

sons are able to float much easier than persons of sUght build; females better than

males. Persons who are maimed or have not the full use of the limbs, young or old,

are upon equal terms. Very little energy or muscular force is required. A person

who may feel that a more violent form of exercise can no longer be enjoyed can always

have ~pleasant time whefl bathing if able to float. What a nice feature it would add

to our entertainments if some of our senior members could give a good exhibition of

fancy swimming and floating! The advantages of floating, to the swimmer, are too

numerous for me to dwell upon at length here, but a word to tho~e swimmers who have

neglected to learn this useful feature and whose whole thought is prize winning. When

your ambition is exhausted, your power of endurance and speed are waning, and you are

no longer in the first rank 'of racing competition, you will gradually forsake bathing,

not being able to show to advantage, as in the past, whereas, if you learn to be a thorough

master of the water you can enjoy yourself in our pool or at the seashore. When

bathing in the sea I knowof

no pleasanter sensation than to go out beyond the breakersand stretch out upon the waves, and be buoyed up and down by nature's hidden power.

To float on the water. so buoyant. so free. The acme of ecstacy. that Is .to me,Now In the trough, now on the crest,in nature's own cradle. rock me to re~t.

    Swimming instructor, Wayne :JI{atatorium.
