    DEATH AND ROBBERY

Which Came First, Who Can Tell?

TERRIBLE DEATH OF D. Y. BLACKAN OLD SOLDIER

Found Dead Amid Squalid Surroundings -Strange Disappearance of His Pension Drawn

the Day Before, and of a Man He HadBefriended.

"Dan Black was found dead this morning," was the wordthat greeted persons who were down town early Sundaymorning. "That's what I expected," was the remark generallymade, as it was known to all, that Black was a very harddrinker and lived a life of dissipation. He was found dead ina little back room of the old home of his parents about 8o'clock Sunday morning by George Fogleson and EmeryBarnard. The latter had made a pair of boots for him andwent to the place to deliver the boots. The sight which mettheir gaze was a horrible one. On the floor poor Black lay facedownward. All that was underneath him was an oldcomforter and a straw tick. He had on all his clothes, but thecoats on one are were partly removed, showing that he hadevidently been very much under the influence of liquor andunable to take off the coats. The alarm was quickly given andDr. C.A. Lerch called and Marshal Ellsperman notified. Itwas seen at once that he had been dead several hours, although when the body was turned clouds of vapor arose. His face presented an awful sight, the nose was flattened out,the flesh almost black, the features terribly distorted and fromthe mouth and nostrils oozed out yellow slime that give outthe sickening odor arising from whisky and alcohol. "Thebest temperance lecture ever brought to my attention," wasthe remark made by a man who is leading just such a life asthe dead man has lived. (Continued on page 4)

  • (Continued from page 3)That a man brought up as Daniel Black could live and die in suchsurroundings in Wooster does not seem possible. The little roomwas devoid of all furniture but a broken bed, no carpet, no chairs;in one corner was an old door which had been fixed up as a tableand which was covered with empty whisky and beer bottles, a fewold cooking utensils and empty cans. On one side of the smallstove was a rudely constructed couch, only raised from the floor ata slight elevation and covered by a small piece of carpet. On theother side was an old tin bucket partly filled with water, an oldbroken down bed and on the floor on the filthy bedding welteringin his own filth lay the stalwart form of poor Black, cold and stiffin death. His end must have been terrible. Township TrusteeGlasgo was notified and had the remains taken to the undertakingrooms of Landis & Schmuck. Before the body was taken to therooms several hundred persons had gazed on the fearful sight. Itwas decided to be necessary to hold an inquest and a message wassent to Coroner Huntsberger. Drs. C.A. Lerch and Jos. E. Barrettconducted a post mortem examination. The heart was but littlemore than half the size, the kidneys were fatty and greatlydiseased, the liver weighed eight pounds and 12 ounces. Theorgan in a hearty person weighs from three to four pounds. Nota particle offood was found in the stomach, only a yellowish fluid. As there seemed to be a suspicion that death might have beencaused by poison the stomach was preserved for chemical analysis.Coroner Huntsberger came over on the evening train and aftermaking some inquiries found that the proper course had beentaken and decided not to hold the inquest until Tuesday morning.

Black was last seen about 1 o'clock Saturday night. He hadbeen sick for three or four days, and when seen by the writer about6 o'clock that evening was standing on West Liberty street. Hewas then very much under the influence of liquor. During theafternoon he had drawn his quarterly allowance of pension, $72,and paid a few small bills and purchased some clothing. He paidFogleson & McCormack $10 for a pair of pants and while thereexhibited quite a roll of bills. He also had his pension papers andas he was afraid oflosing them Mr. Fogleson took the papers andpinned them on the inside of Black's vest. When the body wasfound the papers were missing as was also all of his money excepta check for $3. Postmaster Metzler had cashed Black's pensioncheck and as he did not have quite enough currency gave him acheck which the post office had received from THEREPUBLICAN and which had been issued to THE REPUBLICANPrinting Company by John Brinkerhoff, Esq. This was the checkfound on the floor.

For some weeks Bolack has shared his miserable quarters witha young man by the name of Edward Stieber. Early in the eveningStieber was seen to the room starting a fire. Some time after theywere heard quarreling by some of the people who live in the frontpart of the house. Stieber has had no money, but during the nightbought a lot of whisky at a place on West Liberty street. A fewminutes before the departure of train No.8, at 3:24 a.m. Sunday,he was seen hurrying toward the depot by Policeman Dice.Deputy Sheriff Douglass and officer Ben Miller saw him on thetrain between Wooster and Orrville.' That Steiber took whatmoney Black had left there is but little doubt but whether it wasafter Black's death or before, is of course, not known. The papers

    Page -4-

Black had in his possession were evidently burned as a bunchof charred paper was found in a stove. The check, referred toabove, was among the papers and must have fallen to the r":floor unnoticed. Steiber's disappearance is thought by theofficers to be sufficient evidence of his guilt.

But little is known here of Steiber. He was a shoemaker bytrade and up to a few weeks ago was in the employ of Wm.Muschenich, but was discharged because of his dissolutehabits. Since then he has been drunk all the time and was ina condition to commit any sort of crime. His parents, whoreside in Canal Dover, are said to be very respectable people. The authorities are making every effort to apprehend him.

Daniel Y. Black was aged about 52 years. He was the onlyson of Daniel Black, deceased, he had been married but hiswife some years ago secured a divorce. He was among thefirst to enlist in Wayne county in the early days of theRebellion and was a member of Co. E, 4th Regt, O.v.I. thefirst local company entering the service, being recruited assoon as Sumter fell.

The funeral will take place from the residence of hisbrother-in-law, John Koble on South Market street at 2 p.m.Tuesday.
